Chapter 9: The Father Behind Every Lie
Daniel couldn’t breathe.
For six years, he had imagined what he would say if he ever saw his father again.
If Richard Carter somehow appeared in front of him, Daniel thought he would have questions.
Anger.
Accusations.
A thousand words waiting to escape.
But none of them came.
Because seeing Richard alive wasn’t just shocking.
It was terrifying.
The man standing across the room looked exactly like the memory Daniel carried.
The same silver hair.
The same controlled expression.
The same cold confidence.
The same eyes that had always made Daniel feel like he was being measured instead of loved.
Richard smiled.
“You look surprised.””
Daniel finally found his voice.
“You’re dead.””
Richard glanced around the room.
“Apparently not.””
Daniel’s hands curled into fists.
“How?””
Richard walked slowly toward the desk.
Like he was returning to a place that belonged to him.
Because it did.
This mansion.
This family.
This entire world.
Everything had always belonged to Richard Carter.
“That’s the first question you ask?””
Daniel stared.
“What should I ask?””
Richard looked at him.
“Why?””
The room went quiet.
Daniel felt Claire move closer behind him.
Michael stood near the door, watching every movement.
“You knew,” Daniel said.
Richard didn’t answer.
“You knew Claire was alive.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Mia.””
“Yes.””
“You knew I spent six years thinking my family was gone.””
Richard’s expression didn’t change.
“Yes.””
The calmness made Daniel angrier than any confession could have.
“You don’t care.””
Richard sighed.
“Still emotional.””
The words.
The same dismissive tone.
The same way Richard had spoken to him his entire life.
Daniel remembered being sixteen years old, standing in the kitchen after losing a basketball game.
His father’s response hadn’t been comfort.
It had been disappointment.
“You let yourself lose control.””
Back then, Daniel thought that was normal.
Now he realized something.
It wasn’t.
Richard never saw people.
He saw weaknesses.
Tools.
Obstacles.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You destroyed everything.””
Richard looked almost amused.
“No.””
He glanced at Claire.
“Your wife did.””
Claire’s face hardened.
“Don’t.””
Richard ignored her.
“She made a choice.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“What choice?””
Claire’s eyes filled with pain.
Richard answered for her.
“She chose the truth over her family.””
Daniel looked at him.
“She chose to protect us.””
Richard smiled.
“Did she?””
The question bothered him.
Because it was exactly how Richard operated.
Not with answers.
With doubt.
With small pieces of poison.
Claire stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Richard looked at her.
“You always were stubborn.””
“And you always thought fear was the same thing as loyalty.””
For the first time, Richard’s expression changed.
A tiny crack.
Daniel noticed.
Claire continued.
“You built your entire life around controlling people.””
Richard smiled coldly.
“And yet you’re standing here.””
“Yes.””
“Because you needed me.””
Claire’s jaw tightened.
Daniel looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel’s patience broke.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“No more.””
He pointed at Richard.
“I spent my entire life watching people avoid the truth because they were afraid of you.””
A pause.
“Not anymore.””
Richard studied him.
Almost like he was seeing him for the first time.
“Maybe you finally became a man.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Don’t pretend you’re proud.””
“I’m not.””
The honesty was disturbing.
Richard continued:
“I’m disappointed.””
Those words should have hurt.
Years ago, they would have.
But now they only made Daniel realize how much power he had given this man.
“You don’t get to be disappointed in me.””
Richard tilted his head.
“Why?””
“Because I’m not your son.””
The room froze.
Richard looked at him.
Then smiled.
“You believe that?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
Richard looked at Michael.
“Did he tell you everything?””
Michael’s face tightened.
Daniel immediately understood.
Another secret.
Of course.
There was always another secret.
Richard walked toward the fireplace.
“Your brother has always been good at telling half the truth.””
Michael’s voice became cold.
“Don’t.””
Richard ignored him.
“He told you I wasn’t Michael’s biological father.””
Daniel said nothing.
“He told you Victor was.””
“Yes.””
Richard nodded.
“That part is true.””
Daniel waited.
“But he didn’t tell you the rest.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Richard.””
Richard looked at him.
“You spent years protecting him.””
A pause.
“Maybe it’s time he knows.””
Daniel looked at Michael.
“What didn’t you tell me?””
Michael didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“Michael.””
His brother looked away.
Finally, he said:
“Your father changed the records.””
Daniel frowned.
“What records?””
Michael swallowed.
“The adoption records.””
Silence.
Daniel felt lost.
“Adoption?””
Richard smiled.
“Now we’re getting somewhere.””
Michael closed his eyes.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Explain.””
Michael hesitated.
Then:
“You weren’t born a Carter.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Richard watched calmly.
“You were adopted.””
Daniel looked at him.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“My mother…”
Richard interrupted.
“Loved you.””
The answer shocked him.
Richard continued.
“She loved you more than anyone.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
Then Michael.
Then back at Richard.
“Then why?””
Richard’s face became unreadable.
“Because your real parents were dangerous.””
Daniel shook his head.
“This is insane.””
“No.””
Richard stepped closer.
“This is the truth.””
He placed a hand on the desk.
“Your biological father discovered what I was doing.””
Daniel went still.
“What?””
“He tried to expose me.””
Richard’s voice remained calm.
“So I took you away.””
The room became silent.
Daniel felt sick.
“You stole me.””
Richard didn’t deny it.
“I protected you.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“You controlled me.””
Richard looked almost offended.
“I gave you a better life.””
“A lie.””
“A safe life.””
“A prison.””
For the first time, Richard’s expression hardened.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
Daniel stared.
“And what did you sacrifice?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Because the answer was obvious.
Nothing.
He sacrificed nothing.
Everyone else paid the price.
Claire moved beside Daniel.
“Richard wanted you to believe you were powerless.””
Richard looked at her.
“Careful.””
Claire didn’t stop.
“He wanted you dependent on him.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because you were the one thing he couldn’t control.””
Richard’s face darkened.
Michael stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
He looked at him.
“I need you to know something.””
“What?””
Michael’s voice softened.
“When Claire disappeared, I wasn’t helping her hide from Victor.””
A pause.
“I was helping her hide from Richard.””
Daniel looked at his father.
And suddenly everything connected.
The lies.
The missing years.
The fake death.
The threats.
The fear.
Richard had been at the center of everything.
Richard walked toward the door.
“You’re emotional.””
Daniel watched him.
“I’m done being afraid of you.””
Richard stopped.
Then smiled.
“You think this is the end?””
Nobody moved.
Richard looked at Claire.
Then at Mia, who was standing quietly outside the room with Evelyn.
His expression changed slightly.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Possession.
“You really thought you could keep my granddaughter from me?””
Daniel immediately stepped between them.
“She is not yours.””
Richard looked at him.
“She carries Carter blood.””
Daniel’s voice became ice.
“She carries my love.””
For a moment, Richard said nothing.
Then he reached into his jacket.
Everyone tensed.
But he only removed a small envelope.
He placed it on the table.
“One final thing.””
Daniel didn’t touch it.
“What is it?””
Richard smiled.
“The truth about why Claire really came back.””
Claire’s face changed.
“No.””
Richard looked at her.
“You know what’s inside.””
Daniel noticed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not of Richard.
Of the envelope.
He slowly picked it up.
Opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
His blood turned cold.
Because it showed Claire.
Six years ago.
Standing beside another man.
A man Daniel recognized.
A man he thought was dead.
May you like
And written on the back were six words.
The father of Mia is not Daniel Carter.
