Chapter 4: The Voice From Six Years Ago
Daniel stood completely still, the phone pressed against his ear long after the call had ended.
The screen went dark.
The voice disappeared.
But he could still hear her.
Claire.
The way she breathed before speaking.
The slight tremble in her voice when she was scared.
The quiet way she said his name, like she was afraid saying it too loudly would make him disappear.
Six years.
Six years of silence.
Six years of unanswered questions.
And now, in the middle of a cold autumn afternoon, she had returned with four words.
Don’t trust Michael.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Even the men approaching from the parking lot seemed distant for a moment.
His entire world had narrowed down to one impossible question.
Claire was alive.
But she had warned him.
About his brother.
Michael watched him carefully.
“What did she say?””
Daniel looked up.
The question should have been simple.
But everything about this day had become complicated.
He looked at Michael.
At the man who had been dead for six years.
At the brother who claimed he had been protecting them.
At the person Claire had just told him not to trust.
“She said your name.””
Michael’s expression changed slightly.
Daniel noticed.
A flicker of fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
“What else?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Michael took one step closer.
“Daniel.””
“Don’t.””
His voice was quiet.
But the warning was clear.
For the first time, Michael stopped.
The men in dark jackets were getting closer.
Evelyn looked toward them nervously.
“We need to leave.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“No.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Daniel—”
“No.””
He looked between Michael and Evelyn.
“I’m tired of everyone deciding what I can handle.””
His voice grew stronger.
“My entire life, people have been making choices for me. My father. My family.
Claire. All of you.””
The words hurt.
Especially Claire’s name.
Because even though she was alive, even though she had finally spoken to him, he still felt abandoned.
Michael lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Daniel pointed toward the approaching men.
“Those people know where she is.””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you know where she is.””
“Yes.””
“And Evelyn knew something.””
“Yes.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“So everyone knew except me.””
Michael didn’t argue.
That made it worse.
Daniel looked at Mia.
The little girl was holding Evelyn’s hand tightly now.
Confused.
Scared.
She didn’t understand the details.
But she understood one thing.
The adults around her were afraid.
Daniel softened immediately.
He crouched slightly.
“Mia.””
She looked at him.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
But it was the kind of nod children gave when they didn’t want adults to worry.
Daniel glanced at Evelyn.
“Take her away from here.””
Evelyn hesitated.
“What are you going to do?””
Daniel looked at Michael.
“I’m going to get answers.””
Michael shook his head.
“That’s exactly what they want.””
“Who?””
Michael looked toward the men.
“The people who are coming.””
A man in a dark coat stepped away from the group.
He wasn’t rushing.
He didn’t need to.
His confidence was worse than aggression.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
Not personally.
But from somewhere.
A memory.
A photograph.
A name in a document.
The man stopped several yards away.
“Daniel Carter.””
Daniel stared.
The man smiled.
“You look just like your father.””
The sentence made Daniel’s stomach tighten.
“Who are you?””
The man ignored the question.
Instead, he looked at Michael.
“You made this difficult.””
Michael’s expression turned cold.
“You always did underestimate me.””
The man smiled.
“No. I understood you perfectly.””
He looked back at Daniel.
“Your brother was always emotional.””
Michael’s jaw tightened.
Daniel noticed.
The stranger continued.
“He always thought he could save everyone.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Where is my wife?””
The man’s smile disappeared.
A little.
“Straight to the point.””
“Where is Claire?””
The man looked at him for several seconds.
Then he said:
“She’s closer than you think.””
Daniel’s heart jumped.
“What does that mean?””
“It means she has been watching you.””
The words hit him.
“She’s been near me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she come back?””
The man tilted his head.
“Maybe she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
The man looked at Michael.
Then back at Daniel.
“Of you.””
Daniel felt like he had been punched.
“No.””
The man shrugged.
“People often refuse to see the truth when it hurts.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Enough.””
The man laughed.
“You still pretend to be the hero.””
Daniel looked at Michael.
“What does he mean?””
Michael didn’t answer.
That silence returned.
The same silence that had destroyed him.
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“Answer me.””
Michael looked away.
And the stranger smiled.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The moment when you realize the person closest to you might have been lying.””
Daniel stared at Michael.
Every instinct told him not to trust this stranger.
But every secret around him pointed in the same direction.
Michael knew more than he admitted.
The stranger reached inside his coat.
Evelyn immediately pulled Mia behind her.
Daniel tensed.
But the man only removed a small envelope.
He tossed it toward Daniel.
It landed on the wet pavement.
“Your wife left this for you.””
Daniel looked down.
His name was written across the front.
In handwriting he knew better than his own.
Claire.
His fingers shook as he picked it up.
Michael’s expression changed.
“Don’t open that.””
Daniel looked up sharply.
The stranger smiled.
“Interesting.””
Michael immediately realized his mistake.
Daniel noticed too.
“Why?””
Michael looked at him.
“Because I don’t know what’s inside.””
“Then why are you telling me not to open it?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Only a few lines.
His eyes moved across the words.
And his heart broke.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then they found me.
I’m sorry.
I wanted to come home.
I wanted to tell you everything.
But I couldn’t.
Because the person you trust most is the person who destroyed our family.
Daniel stopped.
His eyes lifted slowly.
Michael.
The paper shook in his hand.
The stranger watched him carefully.
“What does it say?””
Daniel ignored him.
He kept reading.
There was one final sentence.
One sentence that made his entire body go cold.
Michael is not your brother.
Daniel stared at the words.
The world seemed to tilt.
Because the handwriting was Claire’s.
The warning was Claire’s.
But suddenly, everything he knew about his family felt uncertain.
Michael looked at him.
“What did she write?””
Daniel couldn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know what to believe anymore.
The stranger stepped closer.
“Now you understand.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Understand what?””
The man’s expression became serious.
“That Richard Carter had one final secret.””
A pause.
Then:
“Michael Carter was never his son.””
The wind moved through the trees.
Mia gasped softly.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
And Michael stood completely silent.
Because he didn’t deny it.
Daniel looked at his brother.
His voice barely worked.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Michael looked back at him.
And after six years of secrets…
After six years of believing he knew his own family…
May you like
Michael finally said the words that shattered everything.
“He’s not.””
