Amused

Chapter 8: The Woman Who Entered the Room

Daniel did not ask Vanessa another question that night.

He wanted to.

He wanted to demand every name, every date, every detail she had withheld from him. He wanted to know who had entered Sarah's room, what the blue folder contained, and why a man named Michael Reed seemed certain that the plan had failed.

But Margaret's advice echoed in his mind.

Preserve the evidence. Don't confront anyone without understanding the risks.

So Daniel photographed the call log, saved the recording, and sent a written account of Vanessa's statements to his attorney.

He also contacted the appropriate authorities to report the new information and ask how it should be handled.

Vanessa watched him from the hallway.

"You really think they'll believe you?"" she asked.

Daniel slipped his phone into his pocket.

"This isn't about whether they believe me. It's about making sure the evidence is examined.""

She gave a short, bitter laugh.

"Evidence. You think a few old papers can explain everything?""

"No. That's why I'm not stopping at the papers.""

He carried the suitcase to the front door.

Vanessa followed him.

"Where am I supposed to go?""

"Your sister's old apartment is no longer an option, and I won't decide your arrangements for you. You can contact your family or your lawyer.""

"My family is gone.""

"Then contact your lawyer.""

Her expression hardened.

"You've changed.""

Daniel looked at her.

"No. I've finally started listening.""

He left the house and drove to Claire's.

Lily was asleep on the couch when he arrived, a blanket pulled up to her chin and a picture book open beside her. Claire had left a lamp on in the corner.

Daniel stood in the doorway for a long moment.

His daughter looked peaceful.

He could not remember the last time he had seen her sleep without tension in her face.

Claire appeared behind him.

"How did it go?""

"Badly.""

She glanced toward Lily.

"Did Vanessa tell you anything useful?""

"She admitted she knew Sarah had been investigating financial irregularities. She also admitted Michael Reed had visited the hospital.""

Claire's face tightened.

"Did she say what happened to Sarah?""

"No. But she said she didn't enter the room alone.""

Claire folded her arms.

"Then you need to stop trying to solve this yourself.""

"I'm not.""

"Daniel, I know you. When you get frightened, you bury yourself in work and pretend that if you gather enough information, nobody can hurt you again.""

He looked away.

Claire's voice softened.

"Lily doesn't need you to become a detective. She needs you to become her father.""

Daniel sat beside his daughter.

"I know.""

"Then prove it.""

The next morning, Daniel took Lily to a family counseling appointment arranged through an appropriate referral. He did not question her about Vanessa or Sarah's letter. He let the counselor guide the conversation and answered only when asked.

Later, he took Lily to a bookstore.

She wandered through the children's section, touching the covers of illustrated fairy tales.

"Can I get two?"" she asked.

Daniel smiled.

"Of course.""

She picked up a book about a girl who built a treehouse and another about a dragon who was afraid of the dark.

At the checkout counter, Lily looked at him uncertainly.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

"Even though they're expensive?""

Daniel knelt beside her.

"Books aren't something you have to earn, sweetheart.""

She hugged both books to her chest.

For a moment, the world seemed almost ordinary.

Then Daniel's phone vibrated.

Margaret had sent a message.

*Michael Reed has responded to my letter. He is willing to provide information, but only through a formal interview arranged with the appropriate authorities. He says he has documents concerning both Rebecca and Sarah.*

Daniel read the message twice.

He replied that he would cooperate with the proposed process.

An hour later, Margaret called.

"Michael's attorney has contacted me," she explained.

"He says Michael has preserved correspondence and financial documents that he believes will establish what happened to Rebecca's company. He also claims those records may explain why Sarah was concerned.""

"Can I see them?""

"Not privately. We'll arrange for the material to be provided through the appropriate legal process.""

Daniel glanced at Lily, who was showing a cashier the cover of her dragon book.

"Does Michael know about the hospital key?""

"Apparently, yes. But he won't discuss it without his attorney present.""

Daniel exhaled.

"Then we'll do it properly.""

That afternoon, Daniel met with the investigator handling the new information about Sarah's hospital admission.

He provided the voicemail recording, the photograph, Sarah's letter, and the documents relating to the consulting firm.

The investigator listened without interruption.

When Daniel finished, she said, "I want to be clear that these materials raise questions, but they do not yet establish what happened medically or who, if anyone, was responsible for wrongdoing.""

"I understand.""

"We'll need to verify the records, interview relevant witnesses, and establish the chain of custody for any original documents.""

Daniel nodded.

"Please do.""

The investigator turned to the photograph of Vanessa and Sarah.

"Do you know when this was taken?""

"About six months before Sarah became ill.""

"Do you know why they were together?""

"No.""

"Did Sarah tell you that she was afraid of Vanessa?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Not in those exact words. But she said she didn't trust her.""

The investigator wrote something down.

"And what did you do?""

Daniel looked at his hands.

"I told her she was being unfair.""

The investigator did not judge him.

She simply asked, "Why?""

"Because I trusted Vanessa. Because I thought Sarah was jealous. Because I didn't want to believe there was a problem.""

He swallowed.

"I was wrong to dismiss her concerns.""

The investigator nodded.

"That is important context. We'll continue to assess the evidence.""

When Daniel left the meeting, he felt no closer to knowing how Sarah had died.

But he had finally stopped trying to control the answer.

Two days later, Michael Reed's attorney arranged a formal interview.

Michael arrived with a leather briefcase and the exhausted appearance of a man who had spent years waiting for someone to ask the right questions.

He was in his early forties, with dark hair beginning to gray at the temples.

Daniel had never met him before.

They sat across from one another in a conference room, with their attorneys present and the relevant officials coordinating the exchange of information.

Michael placed a thick folder on the table.

"I didn't want any of this to happen," he said.

Daniel stared at him.

"Did you know Sarah?""

"Yes.""

"Did you visit her in the hospital?""

Michael looked down.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because she had evidence that Rebecca was trying to recover money from the company before she died.""

Daniel's fingers tightened.

"Was Vanessa stealing money?""

Michael took a breath.

"Rebecca believed money had been diverted through consulting invoices. She suspected Vanessa was involved, but she didn't have the complete records. Sarah found documents that helped establish where some of the payments had gone.""

"Why didn't Sarah tell me?""

"She tried.""

Daniel went still.

Michael continued.

"She told me she had asked you to review the documents. She said you wanted to believe it was an accounting error.""

Daniel felt the words strike him like blows.

"That's true.""

"Sarah thought someone was using your trust in Vanessa to move money through your company. She was afraid that if she confronted Vanessa without proof, the records would disappear.""

"So she came to you?""

"Yes. I was Rebecca's husband. I had some of the original financial records.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"What happened to Rebecca?""

Michael's face tightened.

"She died in a car accident. I don't know whether it was an accident in the ordinary sense, and I don't have evidence that Vanessa caused it. But I found discrepancies in the investigation, and I never stopped wondering whether something had been overlooked.""

"Did you tell the police?""

"I gave them the information I had. I couldn't prove anyone had deliberately harmed her.""

He opened the folder.

Inside were copies of invoices, bank statements, and emails between Rebecca and Sarah.

Michael pointed to one document.

"Rebecca wrote this three days before she died. She said Vanessa had asked her to sign off on payments she didn't understand. When Rebecca refused, Vanessa threatened to report her for financial misconduct.""

Daniel read the email.

The words were clear.

I will not sign documents that misrepresent what happened to the funds. If the company is investigated, the records should show who authorized the transfers.

The email was signed by Rebecca.

Daniel looked up.

"Was Vanessa the only person who could authorize those payments?""

"No. Several people had access, including officers of the company and individuals with delegated authority.""

"Could Michael have done it?"" Daniel asked, referring to the name on the documents.

Michael shook his head.

"I had access to some records, but not the authorization system. That's why I filed the civil claim. I wanted the transactions examined.""

"Why did you withdraw the claim?""

"Because I was threatened with a counterclaim, and I couldn't afford to continue. Then Sarah died, and I became afraid that pursuing the matter would put me in danger.""

Daniel stared at him.

"Did you threaten Vanessa?""

"No.""

"Did you enter Sarah's room on the night she died?""

Michael looked at the officials present.

"I visited her that evening. She asked me to bring a copy of the original payment records. I left the folder with her, then went downstairs to speak with a member of staff.""

"What happened after that?""

"I was told Sarah's condition had worsened. I never saw her again.""

Daniel's throat tightened.

"Did you see Vanessa?""

"Yes. She was outside the room when I left.""

"Was anyone else there?""

Michael hesitated.

"Not that I remember.""

The investigator asked him to describe the folder he had brought.

Michael said it was blue, with a metal clasp.

Daniel felt his heart begin to race.

The blue folder.

The one Vanessa had mentioned.

"Do you know what happened to it?"" Daniel asked.

Michael shook his head.

"Sarah told me she would keep it somewhere safe.""

"Did she mention a key?""

Michael's face changed.

He reached into the folder and removed a small photocopy of a hospital property receipt.

At the top was Sarah's name.

Beneath it was a reference number and a handwritten notation.

*Secure Deposit — Key Issued to Authorized Representative.*

Daniel leaned forward.

"Who was the authorized representative?""

Michael pointed to the bottom of the receipt.

The name had been partly obscured by a dark mark, but enough letters remained to identify it.

*V. Reed.*

Vanessa Reed.

Michael looked at Daniel.

"Sarah told me she had arranged for someone to retrieve the folder if she couldn't do it herself. I thought it was you.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I never knew about it.""

Michael's face went pale.

"Then Vanessa wasn't just aware of the deposit.""

He looked down at the receipt.

"She was the person authorized to collect it.""

The investigator took the document for examination and asked Michael to explain how he had obtained the copy.

He cooperated, providing the details he could verify.

When the meeting ended, Daniel walked outside with Margaret.

"Do you think Vanessa took the folder?""

Margaret adjusted the strap of her bag.

"We don't know. The receipt establishes that her name was recorded as an authorized representative. We still need to determine whether the deposit was collected, when it happened, and what the folder contained.""

Daniel looked across the street.

"Then we find out.""

Margaret nodded.

"Yes. Through the proper channels.""

That evening, Daniel visited Claire's house.

Lily was sitting on the floor, arranging her new books in a row.

She looked up when he entered.

"Did you find out what happened to Mommy?""

Daniel knelt beside her.

"Not everything. But we found more of her papers, and people are helping us investigate.""

"Was Vanessa lying?""

Daniel took a slow breath.

"She hasn't told us the whole truth.""

Lily's eyes filled.

"Did Mommy know?""

"I think she was worried about something, yes.""

Lily looked at her books.

"Maybe that's why she wrote the letter.""

Daniel pulled her into his arms.

"Maybe.""

She hugged him tightly.

Then she whispered, "Daddy, I don't want to go back to that house.""

"You won't have to return there while we're working out what is safest for you.""

Lily let out a shaky breath.

For the first time, she seemed to believe him.

But as Daniel was leaving, Margaret called with an update from the hospital.

The records team had located an entry showing that Sarah's secure deposit had been accessed after her death.

The collection date was three days after the funeral.

And the signature on the release form belonged to Vanessa.

Daniel stopped walking.

"Was the blue folder listed among the retrieved items?""

Margaret paused.

"That's the problem. The form confirms that a sealed package was collected, but the item description is incomplete.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means we can't establish what was inside the package from that form alone.""

Daniel gripped the phone.

"Can we trace where it went?""

"We're working on that.""

He looked back at Claire's house, where Lily was safe inside.

For three years, Vanessa had controlled the story of Sarah's death.

Now the hospital records showed that she had collected something Sarah had deliberately placed in secure storage.

Something connected to the blue folder.

Something she had never told Daniel existed.

And if Vanessa had taken it after the funeral, she had not merely hidden the past.

She had made a choice to keep it hidden.
