Amused

Chapter 7: The Key That Was Never Supposed to Exist

Daniel replayed the voicemail recording six times.

He had managed to capture the final seconds of Vanessa's call before the connection dropped. Each time he listened, the same words emerged from the background.

He doesn't know about the hospital key.

Then silence.

Daniel sat at his desk until the clock above the filing cabinet struck midnight. The house felt unfamiliar now, as though every room contained a secret he had failed to notice.

He opened Sarah's folder again.

The blue folder. The hospital key. Michael Reed.

Three clues, each pointing toward something he could not yet see.

He called Margaret Ellis.

She answered sounding half asleep.

"Daniel? What happened?""

"I need you to hear something.""

He played the recording.

When it ended, Margaret was silent.

"Do you have the complete call log?"" she asked.

"Yes.""

"Save it in its original form. Don't edit the recording, don't send it to people who don't need it, and don't confront Vanessa about the key until we understand what we're dealing with.""

"She knows I found Sarah's documents.""

"Then she may try to remove anything else she believes could implicate her. We need to preserve the evidence and work through the proper channels.""

Daniel stared at the dark window.

"How do we find Michael Reed?""

"I'll look into the publicly available records. You should also give the hospital's review team the recording and the documents you found, through the appropriate process.""

Daniel agreed.

Before ending the call, Margaret added, "One more thing. If Lily is staying with Claire, keep her there until the safeguarding professionals have assessed the situation and helped determine what arrangement is safest. Don't put her in the middle of this investigation.""

"I won't.""

For once, Daniel understood that protecting his daughter meant keeping her away from the adults' battle, not making her responsible for solving it.

The next morning, he drove to Claire's house.

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table, eating scrambled eggs while her aunt prepared pancakes.

When Daniel entered, Lily immediately looked toward his hands.

"Did you bring the letter?""

He crouched beside her chair.

"Not yet, sweetheart.""

Her shoulders dropped.

"But I found some of your mother's other papers.""

"Did they say something bad about Vanessa?""

Daniel paused.

"Some of them raised questions I need to investigate.""

Lily pushed a piece of egg around her plate.

"Are you scared?""

The question surprised him.

"A little.""

"Mommy used to say being scared doesn't mean you should stop doing the right thing.""

Daniel felt his throat tighten.

"She was right.""

Lily looked up.

"Are you going to keep doing the right thing?""

He took her hand.

"Even when it's difficult.""

She nodded, apparently satisfied, and returned to her breakfast.

Daniel watched her for a moment.

At home, Vanessa had convinced Lily that hunger was selfishness and honesty was betrayal. At Claire's table, the little girl was learning that food could be offered without conditions and questions could be asked without punishment.

It should have been an ordinary morning.

Instead, Daniel felt ashamed that his daughter needed to leave her own home to experience it.

Claire walked him to the front door.

"She woke up twice last night," she whispered.

"Both times, she asked whether Vanessa could come and take her away.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Did you tell her no?""

"I told her that the adults responsible for keeping her safe were working on it. I didn't promise something I couldn't control.""

He nodded.

"Thank you.""

Claire touched his arm.

"Daniel, whatever you discover, don't let guilt make you rush into another bad decision. Lily needs you to be steady.""

"I know.""

"Then be steady.""

Back in his car, Daniel called Margaret.

She had found an address associated with Michael Reed, although she cautioned that it needed verification. He had previously been connected to a small accounting firm that had closed several years earlier.

More importantly, the records suggested that Michael had filed a civil claim against Reed Advisory Services shortly before his wife's death.

The claim had been withdrawn.

Daniel asked Margaret to obtain the available court documents and identify the appropriate way to contact Michael.

By early afternoon, she called again.

"The claim involved disputed transfers from an account associated with the company," she explained.

"Michael alleged that funds had been moved without proper authorization. I haven't established who made those transfers or whether the allegations were substantiated.""

"Was Vanessa named?""

"She appears in the documents as a company officer. That doesn't establish criminal conduct, but it makes the connection relevant.""

Daniel stared at the photograph of Sarah and Vanessa outside the restaurant.

"Can we speak to Michael?""

"I've sent a letter through a verified contact channel. We'll wait for a response.""

Daniel was about to end the call when Margaret added, "There's another detail. One of the documents references a secure storage locker at the hospital. It appears to have been associated with a patient-property deposit.""

"The hospital key?""

"Possibly. But we don't know whether it's the same key Vanessa mentioned.""

Daniel looked at the voicemail transcript.

He remembered Sarah's final days with painful clarity now. She had been worried about money, had asked him to review an invoice, and had insisted that he keep copies of certain documents outside the house.

He had told her he would deal with it after the next business trip.

He had never gotten the chance.

Or perhaps he had been given the chance and failed to recognize it.

That evening, Daniel returned to the house to collect some of Lily's clothes.

Vanessa was waiting in the hallway.

She wore a gray sweater and had pulled her hair into a loose bun. Her eyes were red, but her expression was controlled.

"Where is Lily?""

"With Claire.""

"For how long?""

"Until we have a clearer picture of what's happening.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You can't keep my family away from me indefinitely.""

"I'm following the advice I've received while the concerns are assessed.""

She laughed bitterly.

"Advice from a teacher and a lawyer. Wonderful.""

"Vanessa, I want to talk about the hospital key.""

Her expression changed so quickly that Daniel knew he had touched something important.

"What key?""

"The one you mentioned on the phone.""

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

"I have the recording.""

Vanessa's lips parted.

For several seconds, she appeared to be searching for a response.

Then she walked into the living room and sat down.

"Michael called me earlier," she said.

Daniel remained standing.

"Why?""

"He wanted money.""

"What does he have to do with Sarah?""

Vanessa stared at the floor.

"Michael was involved in Rebecca's financial affairs. After Rebecca died, he blamed me for everything that went wrong with their company.""

"Was he involved in Sarah's hospital admission?""

"No.""

"Did he visit her?""

Vanessa looked up sharply.

"Who told you that?""

"Answer the question.""

She rose.

"I don't have to answer questions like I'm on trial in my own home.""

Daniel's voice remained quiet.

"I'm asking you about my wife's death.""

"And I'm telling you that I didn't kill Sarah!""

The words exploded through the room.

Daniel stared at her.

Vanessa's face had turned scarlet.

She looked as shocked by her own outburst as he was.

Then she began to cry.

"I loved her," she whispered.

"I did. She was difficult sometimes, but I loved her.""

Daniel remembered Sarah's letter.

The person who tells you that a child is destroying your family may be the person who is destroying it.

He did not move toward Vanessa.

He did not comfort her.

He simply asked, "Then why are you afraid of the records?""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I made mistakes.""

"What mistakes?""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

She lowered her hands.

"From the truth about your business.""

Daniel felt a chill move through him.

"What truth?""

Vanessa walked to the window.

"Before Sarah became ill, she discovered that money was missing from one of your company's accounts. She believed someone was using the consulting firm to move funds.""

"Was she right?""

"I don't know.""

"You're listed as an officer of the firm.""

"I was helping Rebecca manage the business.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because you would have accused me of stealing.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Did you?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. But I knew Rebecca was in trouble, and I knew Michael had been moving money without her knowledge. When Sarah found the documents, she threatened to report the transfers.""

"Then why did you tell her to stay quiet?""

Vanessa's eyes filled again.

"Because Rebecca was already dead, and I was terrified that the investigation would expose everything.""

Daniel felt his pulse hammering.

"Expose what?""

Vanessa did not answer.

He stepped closer.

"What happened to Rebecca?""

Vanessa looked away.

"She died in a car accident.""

"Was anyone else involved?""

"I don't know.""

"Did Michael cause it?""

"I said I don't know!""

She gripped the window frame.

Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, she added, "But I know he was with her that night.""

Daniel felt the room tilt.

"Was he with Sarah, too?""

Vanessa turned toward him.

For a moment, she looked like a trapped animal.

Then she shook her head.

"I never saw him enter Sarah's room.""

"That isn't what I asked.""

"I can't tell you what I didn't see.""

Daniel stepped back.

He had expected a denial.

He had not expected Vanessa to admit that she had been watching the hospital entrance closely enough to know who came and went.

He took out his phone.

"I'm sending your statement to Margaret.""

Vanessa lunged forward.

"Don't!""

Daniel moved away.

She caught his sleeve.

"Daniel, please. You don't understand what Michael is capable of.""

He looked at her hand until she released him.

"Then tell me.""

Vanessa's shoulders began to shake.

"He has the original documents. The ones Rebecca kept. If he gives them to the police, everything will come out.""

"What documents?""

"The transfers. The authorization records. The emails between Rebecca and Sarah.""

Daniel felt a wave of anger so strong that he had to grip the back of a chair.

"You knew Sarah was investigating this, and you let me believe she was simply unlucky.""

"I was trying to keep you out of it.""

"You let our daughter believe she had to hide her hunger to keep this family together.""

Vanessa flinched.

"You think I don't know what I've done?"" she whispered.

"You think I haven't spent every night wondering when it would all fall apart?""

Daniel stared at her.

"Did you hurt Lily?""

Vanessa looked away.

"Did you hurt my daughter?""

"I never meant to.""

The answer was worse than a denial.

Daniel turned toward the stairs.

"Pack a bag. You're staying somewhere else while we work through this.""

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"You can't throw me away after everything I've done for you!""

He gently removed her hand.

"This isn't about what you've done for me. It's about what you've done to Lily and what you may know about Sarah.""

He walked upstairs, collected Lily's remaining belongings, and placed them in a suitcase.

When he returned to the hallway, Vanessa was standing beside the front door.

Her face had gone pale.

"Daniel," she whispered, "if Michael contacts you, don't meet him alone.""

He stopped.

"Why?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Because the last person who tried to recover that blue folder disappeared before the police could question him.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Who?""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen, and terror replaced every other expression.

The caller's name was visible.

*Michael Reed.*

She answered with shaking hands.

"Michael, I told you not to call me here.""

A man's voice came through the speaker, loud enough for Daniel to hear.

"You've had three years to keep your mouth shut, Vanessa. If Daniel has found Sarah's letter, then the plan has failed.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Michael continued.

"And if he finds the key, he'll discover who really entered that room before Sarah died.""

The call ended.

Daniel stood in the hallway, the suitcase hanging from one hand.

Vanessa slowly lowered her phone.

For the first time, she looked at him without pretending to be the victim.

May you like

And when she spoke, her voice was almost inaudible.

"I didn't go into Sarah's room alone.""
