Chapter 8: The Baby Nobody Was Allowed to Remember
Daniel couldn't remember how he got out of the house.
One moment, he was standing in the living room while Vanessa claimed that Sarah had given birth to another child. The next, he was sitting in Richard's car, staring at the rain sliding down the windshield.
Richard had insisted they leave before Daniel confronted Vanessa further.
“You're too upset to get reliable information from her right now,” the attorney had said.
Daniel barely heard him.
Sarah had given birth to another child.
A baby nobody had ever mentioned.
A child who had supposedly disappeared.
“How could I not know?”” Daniel whispered.
Richard kept his eyes on the road.
“We don't know that the claim is true.””
“She said Sarah had another baby.””
“Vanessa has repeatedly made statements that we haven't been able to verify.””
“But what if it's true?””
Richard didn't answer immediately.
Then he said, “Then we need to find out what happened to that child.””
Daniel pressed his hands against his forehead.
He had spent years believing that the worst thing that had ever happened to his family was Sarah's death.
Now he was beginning to wonder whether their tragedy had started long before he met Vanessa.
The next morning, Daniel visited Sarah's sister, Claire.
Claire lived in a small house on a quiet street, surrounded by flower beds she maintained with almost obsessive care. She had always been protective of Sarah, but after Sarah's death, her relationship with Daniel had become distant.
When he arrived, she opened the door and stared at him.
“You look terrible.””
“Thank you.””
“I'm serious. Have you slept?””
“No.””
Claire stepped aside.
“Come in.””
Daniel followed her into the kitchen.
A pot of tea was warming on the stove. Family photographs covered one wall, including a picture of Sarah holding Lily as a newborn.
Daniel sat down.
“Claire, I need to ask you something about Sarah.””
Her expression changed.
“What happened?””
He took a breath.
“Did Sarah ever have another baby before Lily?””
Claire's hand froze above the teapot.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Claire set the pot down.
“Who told you that?””
“Vanessa.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Oh, Sarah.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“It's true?””
Claire sat opposite him.
“Yes.””
The word struck him harder than he expected.
“How could nobody tell me?””
“Because Sarah didn't want anyone to know.””
“Why?””
Claire looked toward the window.
“Sarah was very young when she became pregnant. It was before she met you. The father was someone she barely knew, and the relationship ended badly.””
Daniel struggled to process the information.
“Did the baby die?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
He gripped the edge of the table.
“Then where is the child?””
“Sarah was told the baby had been placed with another family.””
“Adopted?””
“That's what she believed.””
“Did she agree to it?””
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“Sarah said she signed some papers after giving birth. She was frightened, exhausted, and alone. She told me she didn't understand everything she was signing.””
Daniel felt sick.
“Who arranged it?””
“I don't know. Sarah said a woman from the clinic helped her. She never told me the woman's name.””
“Vanessa?””
Claire went pale.
“I don't know.””
Daniel stood and began pacing.
“Sarah told me she had no children before Lily. She told me Lily was her first baby.””
“She wanted to start over.””
“Start over?””
Claire's voice broke.
“Daniel, Sarah was ashamed of what happened. She believed the baby was safe and loved. She wanted to forget the circumstances surrounding the birth.””
Daniel stopped pacing.
“Did she ever try to find the child?””
Claire nodded.
“Years later. She hired someone to look into it, but the records were incomplete. Then she met you, became pregnant with Lily, and everything changed.””
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Because she was afraid you'd think differently of her.””
Daniel stared at her.
“I loved Sarah.””
“I know.””
“She could have told me anything.””
Claire wiped her eyes.
“Perhaps she knew that. Perhaps she was more frightened of her own past than she was of your reaction.””
Daniel sank into the chair.
“Did Vanessa know about the baby?””
Claire hesitated.
“She knew Sarah was searching for the child. They became friends through the support organization, and Sarah confided in her.””
“Then Vanessa helped her?””
“That's what Sarah told me at first.””
“And later?””
Claire looked down at her hands.
“Later, Sarah became frightened.””
Daniel's heart began to pound.
“Why?””
“Sarah said Vanessa had found information about the child's placement. She claimed she could help reunite Sarah with the baby.””
“Did she?””
Claire shook her head.
“No. Sarah said Vanessa started demanding money. When Sarah refused, Vanessa threatened to tell everyone about the first pregnancy.””
Daniel stared at her.
“And Sarah still introduced her to me?””
“She believed Vanessa had changed. She thought the woman had helped her once and could be trusted again.””
Daniel thought of the photograph from the community center.
The two women standing side by side.
Sarah smiling.
Vanessa holding Mason.
A friendship that had become something far more dangerous.
“Claire, did Sarah ever tell you the child's name?””
Claire rose and walked toward a cabinet.
“I've kept something all these years. I never knew whether it was important.””
She returned with a small envelope.
Inside was a faded hospital bracelet and a photograph of a newborn wrapped in a white blanket.
Daniel stared at the picture.
On the back, Sarah had written a single name.
Noah.
Below it was a date.
The date was eighteen months before Lily's birth.
Daniel looked up.
“Where did you get this?””
“Sarah sent it to me after the birth. She said it was the only photograph she had.””
Daniel held the picture carefully.
“Did she ever mention Michael Reeves?””
Claire frowned.
“Michael?””
“Do you know him?””
“Yes. He was the man Sarah dated before she met you.””
Daniel felt his pulse quicken.
“Was he Noah's father?””
Claire shook her head.
“No. Sarah told me the father was someone else. She refused to give me his name.””
“Then why was Michael involved in the hospital records?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
The baby had a tiny fist tucked beneath his chin.
A small face.
Closed eyes.
A life that had begun before Daniel ever knew Sarah existed.
“Did Sarah believe Noah was alive when she died?””
Claire nodded.
“Yes. She was still searching for him.””
Daniel's throat tightened.
“Then why did she tell me nothing?””
Claire reached across the table and squeezed his hand.
“Because she was trying to protect the life she'd built with you.””
Daniel looked down at the photograph.
He could understand shame.
He could understand fear.
But he couldn't understand how the truth had become so dangerous that everyone who knew it had chosen silence.
Then Claire spoke again.
“There was something else.””
Daniel raised his head.
“Before Sarah died, she called me late one night. She said she'd found a lead on Noah's whereabouts.””
“What lead?””
“A name. A family that had adopted a little boy around the time Noah was born.””
“Did she tell you the name?””
Claire nodded.
She took a folded piece of paper from the envelope and handed it to him.
Written in Sarah's handwriting were two words.
The Reev es family.
Daniel stared at the name.
Then he looked at Claire.
“Michael Reeves?””
Claire's face went white.
“I never realized the connection.””
Neither did Daniel.
But now he understood why Michael's name appeared in the records, why Vanessa had hidden the photographs, and why Sarah had been so afraid of the past catching up with her.
The man who might have fathered Lily was connected to the family that had adopted Noah.
And Vanessa had known both secrets.
Richard arrived at Claire's house an hour later.
He reviewed the photograph, the hospital bracelet, and the note Sarah had written.
“We need to verify the adoption records,” he said.
“If Noah was placed with a family named Reeves, the relevant authorities may be able to establish whether Michael was connected to that placement.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Can you find the family?””
“We can begin a formal inquiry.””
“Begin now.””
Richard nodded and made several calls.
While he worked, Daniel sat beside Claire and looked at the photograph of Noah.
He wondered what the child would look like now.
Whether he had grown up in a loving home.
Whether he knew he had been adopted.
Whether he had ever wondered why his birth mother had disappeared from his life.
And whether Sarah had died believing she had failed a child she had never stopped loving.
Richard ended a call.
“I've located a possible lead. Michael Reeves was married to a woman named Eleanor Reeves. They adopted a boy in the relevant period.””
Daniel stood.
“Where do they live?””
“The records suggest they're still in the state. But I can't confirm that the adopted child was Noah without further verification.””
“Then let's find out.””
Richard looked at him carefully.
“Daniel, if this is the same child, the investigation could become complicated. We need to respect the privacy of the people involved and follow the proper legal process.””
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.””
But inside, he felt an urgency he could barely contain.
If Noah was alive, Sarah's final years had been filled with a search that had never ended.
And if Vanessa had known where he was, she had kept that information hidden while raising Lily in a house full of fear.
Daniel looked at the photograph one more time.
“We owe him the truth.””
That evening, Richard received a call from an investigator who had been helping verify the old adoption records.
He put the call on speaker so Daniel could hear.
“We've located a possible match,” the investigator said.
“The adoption took place through a private agency that closed several years ago. Some of the records have been transferred to a successor organization.””
“Can you establish the child's current identity?”” Richard asked.
“Not yet. But I found a note in an archived correspondence file. It references a dispute over the original birth certificate.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“What kind of dispute?””
The investigator paused.
“The adoptive parents requested that the original certificate remain sealed. A woman later contacted the agency asking to reopen the case.””
“Who was the woman?””
“We're still verifying that.””
“Could it have been Sarah?””
“Possibly.””
Daniel's heart pounded.
“Did the agency respond?””
“Yes. The file contains a letter stating that the request had been withdrawn.””
“By whom?””
The investigator hesitated.
“The withdrawal was submitted under Sarah Carter's name.””
Daniel stared at Richard.
“Sarah never told me she'd withdrawn her request.””
Richard's expression was grim.
“Could the signature have been forged?””
“We can't determine that from the scan,” the investigator replied.
“The original document may still exist.””
Daniel felt a chill move through him.
Someone had stopped Sarah from finding her first child.
Someone had made it appear that she had given up.
And if the signature wasn't hers, then the person who submitted that withdrawal had wanted Noah to remain hidden.
“Can you tell us who filed it?”” Daniel asked.
The investigator took a breath.
“The form was delivered by hand. The visitor log identifies the person who dropped it off.””
“Who?””
A pause.
Then the investigator read the name.
“Vanessa Carter.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
The room seemed to fall silent around him.
Richard slowly reached for his notebook.
The investigator continued.
“There's one more thing. The file contains a later note from the agency. It says the birth mother may have been given incorrect information about the child's placement.””
Daniel opened his eyes.
“What information?””
The investigator read from the document.
Birth mother informed that child was placed with the Reeves family. Subsequent inquiry suggests the child may have been transferred to another household before the adoption was finalized.
Daniel gripped the table.
“Transferred where?””
“We don't know yet.””
The call ended after the investigator promised to continue tracing the records.
Daniel sat motionless.
Noah might not have been raised by the Reeves family after all.
The name could have been a deliberate misdirection.
And Vanessa had personally delivered the document that stopped Sarah from finding him.
Richard closed his notebook.
“We'll need to move carefully.””
Daniel stared at the old photograph.
“No,” he said quietly.
“We've been careful for three years. Look where it got us.””
He stood and walked to the window.
Outside, the streetlights flickered on.
Somewhere in the world, a man who might be Sarah's first child was living a life he knew nothing about.
Daniel had no idea who he was.
But he knew one thing.
He would find him.
And when he did, he would discover whether Vanessa had merely hidden a child from Sarah—or whether she had done something far worse.
His phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
This time, there was no warning.
Only a photograph.
A young man stood outside a hospital entrance, wearing a dark jacket and holding a folded document.
Beneath the photograph was a message.
You want to know what happened to Noah? Ask the man in this picture why he changed his name.
Daniel enlarged the image.
The young man's face was unfamiliar.
May you like
But the name printed on the identification badge clipped to his jacket was clear.
*Noah Carter.*
