Chapter 4: The Secret Behind Sarah's Death
For several seconds, Daniel couldn't move.
The blue folder lay open at his feet, its contents scattered across the hallway like pieces of a life he had never truly understood. Vanessa stood in front of him, her expression calm again, as though she hadn't just turned his entire world upside down.
“Say that again,” Daniel demanded.
Vanessa tilted her head.
“Which part?””
“The part about Lily's real father.””
Her eyes flickered toward the staircase.
“Mason is downstairs.””
“I don't care who's downstairs. Tell me what you meant.””
Vanessa sighed as though he were being unreasonable.
“Lower your voice, Daniel. You're frightening me.””
He stared at her.
“Don't you dare.””
Something in his tone made her straighten.
For the first time since he had known her, Vanessa seemed uncertain about what to say next.
Daniel crouched and picked up the photograph. His fingers shook as he examined the unfamiliar man standing outside Sarah's hospital room.
“Who is he?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Who is this man?””
“I don't know.””
“His photograph was hidden in a folder with my dead wife's medical records. Sarah wrote that you knew what happened. You expect me to believe you don't know him?””
“I expect you to stop treating every piece of paper as proof of a conspiracy.””
Daniel held up the photograph.
“Then explain the date on this hospital record. Sarah was admitted hours before you told me you'd called the ambulance.””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“She'd been feeling unwell for days. I encouraged her to see a doctor.””
“You told me she collapsed at home.””
“She did collapse at home.””
“Then why does this say she was admitted earlier?””
Vanessa stepped past him and began collecting the loose papers.
“Because I was trying to keep your life from falling apart. Sarah was sick, Lily was a baby, and you were working yourself into the ground. I made decisions because someone had to.””
Daniel caught her wrist.
She immediately pulled away.
“Don't touch me!””
He released her.
The irony of her reaction struck him with such force that he almost laughed.
His daughter had flinched when Vanessa touched her.
Now Vanessa was doing the same thing when he confronted her.
“Where is the rest of the evidence?”” he asked.
“This is all there is.””
Daniel glanced at the empty cavity behind the linen closet panel.
“You're lying.””
“Then prove it.””
She gathered the last papers, shoved them back into the folder, and pressed it against her chest.
“You want to know what happened to Sarah? Fine. Sarah was a difficult woman near the end.
She was afraid of dying, afraid of leaving Lily behind, and afraid that you would move on with your life. She began accusing people of things they hadn't done.””
“People like you?””
“Exactly.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“She accused me of wanting her husband. She accused me of wanting her house. She accused me of wanting her child. And now you're standing here doing exactly what she wanted you to do.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“Sarah wrote this letter before she died. She warned me about you.””
“Because she knew she was losing control.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked at him for a long moment.
Then she said, “Of you.””
A child's footsteps sounded on the stairs.
“Mom?””
Mason appeared around the corner, carrying a plastic dinosaur.
He looked from Vanessa to Daniel, then at the papers scattered near the closet.
“Why are you fighting?””
Vanessa's expression changed instantly.
She knelt beside him.
“Oh, sweetheart, we're not fighting. Daddy and I are just talking.””
“Then why is Daddy mad?””
“Because he's confused.””
Daniel stared at her.
Vanessa placed a hand on Mason's shoulder.
“Why don't you go downstairs and watch your cartoons? I'll make you something special.””
Mason hesitated.
“Can I have chicken nuggets?””
“Of course, baby.””
He ran downstairs.
Vanessa waited until his footsteps disappeared before standing again.
“See?”” she whispered.
“There are children in this house, Daniel. Children who need stability. You cannot destroy their lives because of Sarah's old suspicions.””
Daniel took the folder from her hands.
She resisted for a moment, then released it.
“I'm taking this to someone who can examine it.””
Her face went pale.
“You wouldn't.””
“I would.””
“If you involve the police, they'll investigate everything. They'll dig into Sarah's medical history. They'll question people who have nothing to do with this family.””
“Then I suppose we'll finally learn the truth.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Daniel, listen to me. I did what I had to do.””
His blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
She opened her mouth, but a car horn sounded outside.
Vanessa glanced toward the front window.
A black sedan had pulled into the driveway.
Daniel looked through the glass.
A tall man in a charcoal suit was stepping out of the driver's seat. He carried a leather briefcase and moved with the deliberate confidence of someone who had arrived expecting to be obeyed.
Vanessa gripped the edge of the doorframe.
“No,” she whispered.
Daniel turned toward her.
“Who is that?””
She didn't answer.
The doorbell rang.
Daniel went downstairs and opened the front door.
The man removed his sunglasses.
“Daniel Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Richard Hale. I'm an attorney representing the estate of Sarah Carter.””
Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.
“My wife didn't have an estate attorney.””
Richard looked past him into the house.
“Your wife retained me shortly before her death. I've been trying to locate you for three years.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Why?””
Richard opened his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.
“Because Sarah instructed me to deliver this to you personally if certain conditions were met.””
“What conditions?””
Richard's eyes moved toward Vanessa, who had appeared at the top of the stairs.
His expression changed.
“Mrs. Carter.””
Vanessa gripped the railing.
“Richard.””
Daniel looked between them.
“You know each other?””
Richard ignored the question.
“Daniel, before I give you this letter, I need to ask you something. Has your daughter ever told you that Vanessa has been keeping secrets about her birth?””
Daniel's hands tightened around the folder.
“Yes.””
Richard nodded grimly.
“Then I believe the time has come for you to hear what your wife was trying to protect you from.””
He held out the envelope.
On the front, in Sarah's unmistakable handwriting, were six words.
Daniel, the truth about Lily is inside.
And beneath those words was a warning that made Daniel look up at Vanessa.
Do not let her take our daughter.
Richard sat at the dining table while Daniel opened the envelope.
Vanessa remained upstairs.
Daniel could hear her pacing above him, her footsteps moving back and forth across the bedroom floor.
Inside the envelope was a letter, several photocopies, and a small flash drive.
The letter began with a date.
Three days before Sarah's death.
Daniel read the first paragraph in silence.
Then he read it again.
Richard folded his hands.
“Sarah was very specific about how this was to be handled.””
Daniel looked up.
“Why didn't you contact me before?””
“I tried. Several times. Your address changed after Sarah's death, and my correspondence was returned. When I finally located you, I learned that you had remarried.””
“You could have called.””
“I did. The calls were answered by a woman who identified herself as your wife. She told me you wanted nothing further to do with Sarah's estate.””
Daniel went still.
“Vanessa answered your calls?””
“On two occasions.””
Daniel glanced toward the staircase.
Richard continued.
“Sarah asked me to preserve these documents until I could establish a safe way to deliver them. She was concerned that someone might interfere.””
“Someone like Vanessa?””
Richard chose his words carefully.
“I can tell you what Sarah documented. I cannot tell you that every allegation is true without further investigation.””
Daniel looked down at the papers.
One document contained the results of a private paternity test.
The name printed beside the child's information was Lily Carter.
The alleged biological father was not Daniel.
Daniel read the name beneath it.
Then he dropped the paper.
“No.””
Richard didn't move.
Daniel picked it up again.
“This is impossible.””
“Sarah asked for the test because she had concerns about information she had been given before Lily's birth.””
“Lily is my daughter.””
“Legally, yes. Biologically, the document indicates otherwise. But the original laboratory records will need to be verified.””
Daniel stared at the results.
He remembered holding Lily in the hospital, her tiny fingers wrapped around his thumb. He remembered whispering that he would always protect her.
He remembered Sarah smiling weakly and telling him that their little girl had his stubbornness.
Had Sarah known?
Had she lied to him?
Or had someone lied to her?
He looked toward the stairs.
“Where is Vanessa?””
Richard's expression tightened.
“Daniel, I strongly recommend that you don't confront her with anything else until the documents have been reviewed.””
Daniel rose.
“She's been raising my daughter while hiding this from me. She has been telling Lily that she might lose me if she speaks up. I'm not going to sit here and pretend that's normal.””
Richard stood as well.
“Then we should make sure Lily is protected before we do anything else.””
Daniel stopped.
Lily.
His little girl was still at school, frightened and confused, believing that she had to choose between telling the truth and keeping her father.
Whatever the documents meant, she had done nothing wrong.
Daniel returned to his chair.
“Tell me everything Sarah wrote.””
Richard placed the letter in front of him.
But before Daniel could read another line, a sharp crash sounded upstairs.
Then Vanessa screamed.
“Daniel! Get up here! Now!””
He ran toward the staircase.
Richard followed.
At the top, the bedroom door stood open. Vanessa was beside the wardrobe, holding an empty wooden box.
The drawer where Daniel had found Sarah's letter was open.
And the photograph of the unknown man was gone.
Vanessa stared at Daniel.
“Someone has been in this room.””
Daniel looked at the open drawer, then at the empty box in her hands.
“Who?””
May you like
Vanessa's face twisted with fury.
“Your daughter.””
