Chapter 8: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone
The room felt smaller after Arthur spoke those words.
*Your mother is alive.*
I stared at him.
Waiting for him to laugh.
Waiting for him to admit it was some cruel game.
But Arthur didn't.
He simply stood there, watching the world I knew collapse piece by piece.
"No.""
The word came out before I could stop it.
"No, that's impossible.""
Arthur's expression didn't change.
"I understand why you believe that.""
"My mother died.""
"You were told she died.""
The distinction made my stomach turn.
I looked at Daniel.
Then Richard.
Neither of them looked surprised enough.
That was the part that hurt the most.
They knew.
Maybe not everything.
Maybe not the whole truth.
But they knew there was something.
"You knew.""
My voice was directed at Richard.
His eyes lowered.
"Not everything.""
"But you knew.""
Richard didn't answer.
I looked at Daniel.
"And you?""
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
A lifetime of trust disappeared in a single moment.
Not because they lied.
Because they chose when I was allowed to know the truth.
I turned back to Arthur.
"Where is she?""
Arthur studied me.
"You want to see her?""
I almost laughed.
"My mother has been alive for five years, and you're asking me if I want to see her?""
His expression remained calm.
"Before you see her, you need to understand something.""
"I don't need another explanation.""
"You do.""
I stepped forward.
"Where is she?""
Arthur held my gaze.
"She has been hiding because she believed someone was still trying to kill her.""
The room went silent.
"Who?""
Arthur looked at me.
"The same person who killed your father.""
My jaw tightened.
"Arthur, everyone keeps pointing at ghosts.""
"No.""
His voice was firm.
"Everyone has been pointing at the wrong person.""
I stared.
"Then who killed my father?""
Arthur looked at Richard.
Then Daniel.
Then me.
"Your father wasn't betrayed by one person.""
A pause.
"He was betrayed by an entire network.""
The words sounded impossible.
But after everything I had learned, impossible no longer felt impossible.
I looked at Ethan.
He was sitting quietly beside the wall, holding his backpack.
Too quiet.
I walked toward him.
"Ethan.""
He looked up.
"Are we going home?""
The question broke something inside me.
Because home had always meant safety.
But now every memory carried a question.
I crouched down.
"We will.""
"When?""
"Soon.""
He nodded.
Children trusted promises even when adults couldn't trust the world.
I stood.
"Take me to my mother.""
Arthur looked at Daniel.
"Not you.""
Daniel frowned.
"What?""
Arthur shook his head.
"She doesn't want him there.""
That surprised me.
"Why?""
Arthur looked at him.
"Because she doesn't know who she can trust.""
Daniel's face changed.
Pain.
Not anger.
Pain.
I noticed.
And for the first time, I wondered if Daniel had been carrying his own secrets because he was afraid.
Not because he was guilty.
"Michael.""
I turned.
Richard was looking at me.
"Be careful.""
I stared.
"That's what everyone says.""
"Because it's true.""
I walked toward the door.
But before leaving, I stopped beside him.
"One question.""
Richard looked up.
"Did my mother know my father was in danger?""
His expression changed.
Slowly.
"Yes.""
The answer felt like a knife.
"And she didn't warn him?""
Richard looked away.
"She tried.""
That stopped me.
"What?""
"She tried to save him.""
I turned.
"Then why did he die?""
Richard's voice became quiet.
"Because she trusted the wrong person.""
The place Arthur took us was not what I expected.
I imagined some hidden mansion.
Some secret location.
Some heavily guarded building.
Instead, we drove to a small house outside the city.
Simple.
Quiet.
Almost invisible.
That was the point.
Nobody would search for someone powerful in a place like this.
Arthur stopped the car.
"We're here.""
I looked at the house.
My heart was beating faster than I wanted to admit.
Ethan held my hand.
"Dad?""
"Yes?""
"Are you nervous?""
I smiled faintly.
"Maybe.""
"Why?""
I looked at the front door.
"Because sometimes the things we want most are the things we're most afraid to find.""
He thought about that.
Then squeezed my hand.
"It's okay.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because I'm here.""
For a moment, I forgot about everything else.
Then Arthur walked toward the door.
He knocked three times.
A few seconds passed.
The door opened.
And everything stopped.
Because there she was.
My mother.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakably her.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same small movement of her hands when she was nervous.
My mind told me this was impossible.
My heart didn't care.
"Michael.""
Her voice broke.
I couldn't move.
Neither could she.
Five years of grief.
Five years of questions.
Five years of believing I had lost her.
All disappeared in one second.
Then anger returned.
A different kind of pain.
"You were alive.""
Tears filled her eyes.
"Yes.""
"And you let me believe you were dead.""
She looked down.
"I had no choice.""
"No choice?""
My voice rose.
"Ethan grew up without a grandmother because you had no choice?""
She flinched.
The reaction hurt.
Because she wasn't defending herself.
She was accepting the pain.
"I wanted to come back.""
"Then why didn't you?""
"Because if I came back, they would have found you.""
"Who?""
She looked at Arthur.
Then at me.
"The same people who killed your father.""
I shook my head.
"Everyone says that.""
"Because it's true.""
She stepped closer.
"I know what you were told.""
"You know?""
"Yes.""
"Then you know I was told you died.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I know.""
"Do you know what that did to me?""
Her lips trembled.
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
My voice broke.
"You weren't there.""
She looked at Ethan.
Then back at me.
"No.""
A pause.
"But I watched.""
The words stopped me.
"What?""
Her eyes filled.
"I watched from a distance.""
My anger mixed with confusion.
"What are you talking about?""
"I watched you graduate.""
She swallowed.
"I watched you get married.""
My expression changed.
"I watched when you held Ethan for the first time.""
I couldn't speak.
She had been there.
Somewhere.
Watching.
"Why?""
"Because I needed to know you were safe.""
"Safe from what?""
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"From Arthur.""
I turned.
Arthur stood silently near the doorway.
His expression remained calm.
But something shifted.
My mother noticed.
"Michael, listen to me.""
I looked back.
"Your father wasn't killed because of the hotel.""
She stepped closer.
"He was killed because he discovered Arthur's plan.""
Arthur's face remained emotionless.
"She's lying.""
The words came calmly.
Too calmly.
My mother looked at him.
"You always were good at pretending.""
I looked between them.
"Someone explain.""
My mother took a breath.
"Arthur wanted control of the Carter empire.""
Arthur smiled slightly.
"And your mother wanted it too.""
My mother's face hardened.
"That's not true.""
Arthur looked at me.
"Ask her about the documents.""
I turned.
"What documents?""
My mother's expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
And that was enough.
"What documents?""
She didn't answer.
Arthur stepped forward.
"The documents your father discovered.""
My heart started pounding.
"What did my father discover?""
Arthur smiled.
"The truth about who actually owned the Grand Aurelia Hotel.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
My mother whispered:
"Michael...""
Her voice shook.
"Your father wasn't the true heir.""
Silence.
"What?""
She looked at me.
"The hotel was never supposed to belong to you.""
I stared.
"Then who?""
My mother looked at Ethan.
And the fear in her eyes returned.
"Your son.""
The room went completely still.
Arthur smiled.
"Now you understand.""
I looked at Ethan.
My six-year-old son.
The reason all of this had started.
The reason people were watching.
The reason secrets were coming back.
My mother whispered:
"Your grandfather created everything for one purpose.""
A pause.
"To pass the entire legacy to the next generation.""
I looked at Arthur.
Then my mother.
Then Ethan.
And suddenly I understood.
This was never about me.
It was never about my ownership.
It was never about the hotel.
It was about who came after me.
Arthur stepped closer.
"That is why your father died.""
My voice was cold.
"Why?""
Arthur looked directly at Ethan.
"Because someone wanted to control the heir.""
The lights suddenly went out.
Again.
Just like the estate.
My mother's voice cut through the darkness.
"Michael...""
"What?""
"Don't move.""
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Then footsteps.
Several people.
Approaching the house.
Arthur whispered:
"They found us.""
I felt Ethan grab my hand.
Then my mother said something that made my blood run cold.
"Michael, there's one thing I never told you.""
I turned toward her voice.
"What?""
Her answer came softly.
"The person leading them...""
May you like
A pause.
"...is your father.""
