Amused

Chapter 7: The Mother’s Hidden Promise

The word echoed through the old library.

*Mother.*

For several seconds, I couldn't process it.

Not because I didn't hear Richard.

Because my mind refused to accept what my ears had just received.

My mother.

The woman who held my hand when I was sick.

The woman who stayed awake beside my bed after nightmares.

The woman who cried beside my father's coffin.

The woman who spent years telling me that family was the only thing that mattered.

That woman?

A traitor?

I looked at Richard.

"Take that back.""

My voice was quiet.

But everyone in the room heard the warning behind it.

Richard didn't move.

"I wish I could.""

I stepped closer.

"You are accusing my mother of murdering my father.""

"No.""

His answer came immediately.

"I'm saying your mother knew something.""

I stopped.

There was a difference.

A huge difference.

Daniel looked between us.

"Richard, be careful.""

Richard turned toward him.

"Why? Because after fifteen years we're still protecting the same secret?""

Daniel's expression darkened.

"I don't know what you think you know.""

Richard laughed softly.

"That is the problem with all of you.""

He looked at me.

"You've spent years protecting Michael from the truth.""

I stared at him.

"Then tell me the truth.""

Richard looked at the photograph in my hand.

"Your father wasn't trying to destroy Victor Hale.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"He was trying to expose someone else.""

"Who?""

Richard pointed at the picture.

"Someone inside the family.""

I looked down again.

The photograph showed my father standing beside my mother.

But there was something else.

A document in my father's hand.

And my mother looked worried.

Not angry.

Not happy.

Afraid.

I studied the image.

"When was this taken?""

Richard answered.

"Three days before your father died.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why do you have it?""

"Because your father gave it to me.""

"Why?""

Richard looked away.

"Because he knew something was wrong.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

Everyone looked at me.

I swallowed.

"My mother loved my father.""

Richard's expression softened.

"I believe she did.""

"Then why are you saying this?""

"Because love doesn't mean people never make mistakes.""

The sentence stayed with me.

Because I knew that was true.

People could love someone and still hide things.

People could want to protect someone and still hurt them.

But murder?

Betrayal?

That was different.

I looked at Daniel.

"What do you know?""

Daniel didn't answer.

That was enough.

"Daniel.""

He closed his eyes.

"I know your mother was involved.""

The room went completely silent.

I felt something break inside me.

Not anger.

Not disbelief.

Something deeper.

A memory.

A thousand memories.

My mother making breakfast.

My mother teaching me to tie my shoes.

My mother telling me my father was the strongest man she knew.

How could all of that exist beside a secret like this?

"What does involved mean?""

Daniel looked at me.

"It means your father trusted her with information.""

"What information?""

"The ownership records.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Daniel continued.

"Your father discovered someone had been changing financial documents connected to the hotel.""

Richard nodded.

"He found evidence that millions were being moved through hidden accounts.""

I looked at the documents.

"And he thought my mother did it?""

"No.""

Richard shook his head.

"Your father suspected she was being forced.""

That surprised me.

"Forced?""

Richard nodded.

"Your mother knew something dangerous.""

"What?""

"She knew who was behind the money transfers.""

I stared.

"Who?""

Richard looked at Daniel.

Neither spoke.

I felt my patience disappear.

"Enough.""

My voice filled the room.

"No more secrets.""

I slammed the photograph onto the table.

"You all keep saying you are protecting me, but all you've done is let me live inside a lie.""

Nobody answered.

"Who was behind it?""

Finally, Richard spoke.

"Your grandfather's lawyer.""

I froze.

"Arthur?""

Richard nodded.

Arthur Miles.

The family attorney.

The man who handled every major contract.

The man who helped transfer ownership to me after my father's death.

The man who had sat beside me during the hardest years of my life.

Another trusted person.

Another betrayal.

I laughed quietly.

"How many more people are there?""

Nobody responded.

Because they didn't know.

Or because they did.

I looked at Ethan.

He was sitting in the corner with his backpack, watching everything.

My heart sank.

He shouldn't be hearing any of this.

I walked toward him.

"Ethan, come here.""

He stood and came to me.

"Dad...""

"It's okay.""

But his eyes told me he knew it wasn't.

I held his hand.

Then I looked at Richard.

"Why did Arthur do it?""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Power.""

Again.

That same answer.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

"Because it's the truth.""

Richard walked toward the old bookshelf.

"He believed your family was wasting its influence.""

"What does that mean?""

"He wanted control.""

"Of the hotel?""

"Of everything.""

Daniel added quietly:

"Arthur believed the Carter family was too emotional.""

I frowned.

"Emotional?""

"He thought decisions should be made without loyalty, without compassion.""

Richard looked at me.

"He wanted an empire.""

I thought about Madison.

The receptionist.

The arrogance.

The belief that some people deserved more respect than others.

Suddenly, it all connected.

Maybe these ideas didn't disappear.

Maybe they survived.

Passed from one person to another.

I looked at Richard.

"Where is Arthur now?""

Richard hesitated.

That hesitation bothered me.

"Richard.""

"He works for you.""

I stared.

"What?""

Daniel looked shocked.

"No.""

Richard nodded.

"Yes.""

The room went silent.

I turned toward Daniel.

"You knew?""

He looked stunned.

"I didn't.""

Richard continued.

"Arthur never left the hotel.""

My blood ran cold.

"Where is he?""

Richard looked toward the ceiling.

"Closer than you think.""

Before I could respond, every light in the old estate flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Ethan immediately grabbed my hand.

"Dad.""

"I'm here.""

Daniel pulled out his phone.

"No signal.""

Richard moved toward the window.

"This is not a coincidence.""

I heard footsteps.

Outside the room.

Slow.

Controlled.

Someone walking through the hallway.

Daniel whispered:

"Everyone stay quiet.""

The footsteps stopped.

Right outside the door.

Nobody breathed.

Then the handle moved.

Slowly.

The door opened.

A figure stood in the darkness.

For a second, I couldn't see the face.

Then the emergency lights came on.

And my heart stopped.

Because standing there was someone who should not have known where we were.

Someone who should not have been able to enter the estate.

Someone who had no reason to be there.

Arthur Miles.

He looked older than I remembered.

But his smile was the same.

Calm.

Polite.

Almost friendly.

"Michael.""

His eyes moved to Ethan.

"Your son has grown.""

I stepped in front of my child.

"Arthur.""

He smiled.

"I was hoping we could talk before things became complicated.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You followed us.""

Arthur ignored him.

"No.""

He looked at me.

"I came because I wanted to give you a chance.""

"A chance for what?""

Arthur's expression changed.

The friendly mask disappeared.

"For your family to survive.""

I stared.

"You threatened my son.""

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"That wasn't me.""

The room froze.

"What?""

Arthur looked at Richard.

Then Daniel.

Then me.

"The person who threatened Ethan is the same person who has been hiding from all of you.""

I didn't move.

"Who?""

Arthur took a slow breath.

Then he said:

"The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.""

A pause.

And then:

"Your mother is alive.""

My entire body went cold.

Because everyone believed my mother had died five years ago.

But Arthur was looking at me like he knew something impossible.

May you like

And then he whispered:

"And she wants to meet you.""
