Amused

Chapter 4: The Lie Buried Beneath the Empire

For a moment, nobody moved.

The words hung in the room like a threat.

*The truth about why your father really died.*

I had spent years believing I knew the story.

A car accident.

A rainy highway.

A sudden loss that changed my entire life.

That was what I had been told.

That was what everyone had accepted.

But standing across from me was a man who had been missing for thirty years, looking at me like he had been waiting for this exact moment.

And he knew something I didn't.

I stepped forward.

"Be careful with your words.""

Victor Hale didn't flinch.

Instead, he smiled faintly.

"That sounds familiar.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Is he telling the truth?""

Daniel's expression tightened.

"I don't know.""

That answer bothered me.

Not because it was uncertain.

Because Daniel Hayes was a man who always knew what he was saying.

Victor noticed.

"Still protecting them, Daniel?""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"You have no right to be here.""

Victor laughed quietly.

"Interesting.""

He looked around the office.

"The same hotel. The same family. The same people hiding behind the same walls.""

I moved slightly in front of Ethan.

"You're going to explain why you're here.""

Victor looked at me.

"Direct. Confident.""

He nodded slowly.

"Your grandfather would have been proud.""

"I didn't ask about my grandfather.""

"No.""

Victor smiled.

"You asked about your father.""

The room became silent again.

Ethan looked between us.

"Dad...""

I turned toward him.

"It's okay.""

But I knew it wasn't.

Not anymore.

Victor walked toward the conference table and placed a small black folder on it.

"I brought something for you.""

I didn't touch it.

"What is that?""

"The part of your family's history they decided to hide.""

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Don't listen to him.""

Victor looked at him.

"Why?""

A cold smile appeared.

"Because you know I'm right?""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

I looked between them.

"What happened?""

Neither man answered.

That told me everything.

There was a truth here.

A painful one.

I picked up the folder.

Inside was a collection of old documents.

Newspaper clippings.

Photographs.

And one picture that made my heart stop.

My father.

Standing beside Victor Hale.

I stared at it.

My father had always been described as a quiet businessman.

Private.

Focused.

A man who avoided unnecessary conflict.

But in this picture, he was standing beside the one person my grandfather had feared.

"Where did you get this?""

Victor answered immediately.

"He gave it to me.""

My eyes lifted.

"My father?""

Victor nodded.

"Your father knew the truth.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Did you?""

Daniel looked away.

That was all the answer I needed.

"Daniel.""

His shoulders lowered.

"Sir...""

"Did you know my father knew Victor?""

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel finally said:

"Yes.""

The word hit harder than I expected.

I felt something inside me shift.

Not anger.

Betrayal.

"You knew?""

"I knew they had met.""

"And you never told me?""

Daniel looked down.

"Your father asked me not to.""

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"My entire family kept secrets from me.""

Victor leaned against the table.

"Now you understand.""

I turned toward him.

"Don't pretend you're on my side.""

His smile faded slightly.

"Good.""

"Because I know men like you.""

Victor's eyes sharpened.

"You think you know me?""

"I know enough.""

I pointed toward the folder.

"You disappear for thirty years. You show up when my son becomes part of an inheritance agreement. You threaten my family. And you expect me to believe you're here to help?""

For the first time, Victor looked genuinely impressed.

"You really are your grandfather's grandson.""

I didn't respond.

Victor opened another document.

"Your grandfather made sure everyone believed I was the villain.""

He looked at the paper.

"But the truth is more complicated.""

"Convenient.""

"Maybe.""

He looked at Ethan.

"But your father discovered something before he died.""

I felt my body tense.

"What?""

Victor's voice became quieter.

"He discovered your grandfather wasn't protecting the hotel.""

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"Enough.""

Victor looked at him.

"Afraid they'll learn?""

I turned.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel didn't answer.

I looked at him.

"Daniel.""

He remained silent.

And that silence was louder than words.

Victor continued.

"Your grandfather created the succession clause because he knew someone inside his own circle had betrayed him.""

I stared.

"Who?""

Victor smiled slightly.

"That's the question, isn't it?""

I hated that smile.

Because it told me he enjoyed watching people search for answers.

"Stop playing games.""

Victor walked closer.

"The person who destroyed your family was never outside the walls.""

My eyes narrowed.

"What are you saying?""

"I'm saying your enemy isn't the man standing in front of you.""

He pointed toward the hotel floor below.

"It's someone who has been working beside you.""

The thought made my stomach tighten.

An employee.

A partner.

Someone I trusted.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Victor, leave.""

Victor ignored him.

Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small envelope.

"This belonged to your father.""

I didn't move.

"What is it?""

"A letter.""

"From him?""

Victor nodded.

"He wrote it three days before the accident.""

My breathing slowed.

A letter from my father.

Something I had never seen.

Something that could explain everything.

I reached for it.

But Victor pulled it back.

"Before I give this to you, you need to understand something.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"Your father wasn't killed because of a business disagreement.""

The room felt colder.

"He was killed because he discovered who betrayed your family.""

My fingers curled into a fist.

"Who?""

Victor looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

"The same person who has been standing beside you all these years.""

Daniel's face changed.

"That's impossible.""

Victor smiled.

"Is it?""

I looked at Daniel.

For years, he had been one of the few people I trusted completely.

He had worked with my family.

Protected the hotel.

Protected me.

But now Victor had placed doubt in my mind.

And doubt was dangerous.

Because once planted, it grew.

"Dad.""

I looked down.

Ethan was staring at me.

"Are we leaving?""

His voice was small.

And suddenly, all the business secrets and family history became less important.

Because my son was scared.

I crouched beside him.

"Yes.""

Victor watched quietly.

"You should leave.""

I looked at him.

"You're telling me to leave?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

His expression became serious.

"Because if I am right, staying here puts Ethan in danger.""

I stood.

"You expect me to believe you?""

"No.""

Victor walked toward the door.

"I expect you to investigate.""

He stopped beside Daniel.

"Ask yourself one question.""

Daniel looked at him.

Victor continued:

"Why did your father send a warning to Michael Carter instead of asking you for help?""

Daniel's face went pale.

I noticed.

And that reaction told me more than any explanation could.

Victor opened the door.

Before leaving, he turned back.

"Michael.""

I looked at him.

"Your grandfather spent his entire life protecting a secret.""

A pause.

"But your father spent his final days trying to expose it.""

He placed the envelope on the table.

"Read the letter.""

Then he walked away.

The door closed.

Silence returned.

I stared at the envelope.

My father's handwriting was visible on the front.

*For Michael.*

My hands felt heavier than they should have.

Daniel remained standing near the door.

I looked at him.

"How much do you know?""

He didn't answer.

"Daniel.""

Finally, he spoke.

"There are things your father wanted to tell you.""

"What things?""

His voice cracked slightly.

"But he never got the chance.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

A letter written by my father.

The first line made my entire body freeze.

*Michael, if you're reading this, it means they failed to stop me from telling you the truth.*

I continued reading.

*The person you trust most is the person you should fear.*

My eyes lifted slowly.

Because only one name came to mind.

The person who had been beside my family for decades.

The person standing in front of me.

Daniel Hayes.

And before I could ask him anything, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Then his face turned completely white.

"What is it?"" I asked.

Daniel didn't speak.

He simply handed me the phone.

A photo was displayed on the screen.

It was Ethan.

Taken only minutes ago.

Inside the hotel lobby.

Below it was a message:
