Amused

Chapter 7: The Secret Buried Under Harrison Global

The second attempt starts tonight.

Those six words followed me all the way back to the hospital.

Every red light.

Every turn.

Every second my car moved through the city.

I couldn’t stop thinking about Emma lying in that hospital bed.

Small.

Weak.

Still recovering from something that should have killed her.

And somewhere out there, someone was already planning to finish what they started.

Claire sat beside me in the back seat of the police vehicle.

For the first ten minutes, neither of us spoke.

Seven years of questions filled the silence between us.

Finally, she whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I looked out the window.

“I don’t know what to do with those words.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“No, Claire.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t.””

She looked at me.

“I woke up every day knowing my daughter was growing up without me.””

My throat tightened.

“Then why didn’t you come back?””

Her hands trembled.

“Because every time I tried, someone reminded me what would happen.””

“Who?””

She looked down.

“Everyone I trusted.””

I turned toward her.

“Tell me everything.””

Claire took a deep breath.

And for the first time in seven years…

She stopped hiding.

“When I found the financial records, I thought I had discovered a theft.””

She stared at her hands.

“I thought someone inside Harrison Global was stealing money.””

Detective Mitchell was driving in front of us, listening carefully.

“But it was bigger than that.””

“How?””

Claire looked at me.

“The money was being used to control people.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Blackmail.””

The word landed heavily.

“People in powerful positions were paying to keep secrets buried.””

I looked at her.

“And Vivian?””

Claire’s face hardened.

“Vivian wasn’t the mastermind.””

I remembered the funeral.

Her fear.

Her panic.

The way she looked at the coffin.

“She tried to kill Emma.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

My anger returned.

“You suspected someone was going after our daughter, and you still stayed away?””

Claire flinched.

“I was trying to find the person above her.””

“What person?””

She looked at me.

“The person who made Vivian do it.””

The car became silent.

Detective Mitchell spoke.

“Do you know who that person is?””

Claire looked toward the windshield.

“Yes.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a photograph.

She handed it to me.

I looked down.

The picture showed a meeting room.

Several people sat around a table.

One person was Vivian.

Another was Daniel.

And at the center…

Was me.

My blood ran cold.

“When was this taken?””

Claire’s voice was quiet.

“Three months before we met.””

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“It means someone was planning your life before you even knew they existed.””

I looked at the photograph again.

On the back was a handwritten note.

*Phase Two: Become indispensable.*

My stomach turned.

“Become indispensable?””

Claire nodded.

“Vivian was chosen because she could get close to you.””

“Chosen by who?””

She looked away.

“You already know.””

I hated that answer.

“Say the name.””

Claire whispered:

“Your father.””

The world seemed to stop.

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“My father died ten years ago.””

“I know.””

“You’re saying he planned this?””

“I’m saying someone used his name.””

I looked at the picture again.

My father’s company logo was printed in the corner.

Harrison Foundation.

A charity he created before he died.

A charity I continued running.

“What does the foundation have to do with this?””

Claire looked at Detective Mitchell.

“Tell him.””

The detective sighed.

“Mr. Harrison, we checked the files from your company.””

“And?””

“Your father’s foundation had secret accounts.””

My chest tightened.

“How much?””

“Over the last decade?””

She paused.

“Approximately forty million dollars.””

I stared ahead.

Forty million.

Hidden.

From me.

“Who had access?””

Claire answered.

“Your brother.””

I closed my eyes.

Daniel.

Again.

But something didn’t fit.

Daniel had lied.

He had hidden things.

But he also saved Emma.

He had shown us evidence.

He had helped find Claire.

Someone was pulling strings.

And I couldn’t tell who was holding the knife.

When we reached the hospital, security had already been increased.

Two officers stood outside Emma’s room.

I walked faster.

Nothing mattered except seeing my daughter.

When I entered, Emma looked up.

“Dad.””

I immediately went to her.

“I’m here.””

Her eyes moved behind me.

Then froze.

“Mom?””

Claire stepped into the room.

Emma stared.

For a moment, she looked confused.

Like her brain couldn’t understand what her eyes were seeing.

Then Claire whispered:

“Emma.””

My daughter covered her mouth.

“No.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Claire broke.

She crossed the room slowly.

“I’m sorry.””

Emma didn’t move.

“You’re alive?””

Claire nodded.

“I am.””

“Then why did you leave me?””

The question destroyed everyone in the room.

Claire cried silently.

“Because I thought leaving you was the only way to keep you alive.””

Emma looked away.

“I needed my mom.””

“I know.””

“You missed everything.””

“I know.””

“My first day of high school.””

“I know.””

“My birthday.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I waited.””

Claire collapsed beside the bed.

“I waited too.””

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

It was the first time I saw Claire stop being a mystery.

She was just a mother.

A mother who lost seven years.

A mother who made terrible choices because she was afraid.

Then the hospital lights flickered.

Everyone looked up.

Once.

Twice.

The room went dark.

The emergency lights turned on.

Detective Mitchell immediately reached for her radio.

“Security check every floor.””

A sound came from the hallway.

A soft metallic click.

Like a door opening.

An officer stepped outside.

“Clear.””

Then he stopped.

“Wait.””

We heard footsteps.

Someone running.

The officer chased after them.

Seconds later, a shout echoed.

“Stop!””

Then silence.

I moved toward the door.

Detective Mitchell blocked me.

“Stay here.””

A moment later, the officer returned.

He was holding something.

Not a person.

A folder.

“It was left outside the room.””

He handed it to Detective Mitchell.

She opened it.

Her expression changed.

“What is it?””

She didn’t answer.

She looked at Emma.

Then Claire.

Then me.

Finally, she handed me the folder.

Inside were medical records.

Emma Harrison.

Age twelve.

And on the top page was a note.

A note written in red ink.

*You saved her once. Now find out why she was chosen.*

I turned the page.

The records weren’t about Emma’s illness.

They were about a test.

A test conducted years earlier.

Before Emma was born.

My hands went numb.

Because at the bottom of the document was a signature.

A signature I recognized.

A signature that belonged to someone who had been dead for ten years.

My father.

May you like

And beneath it were three words:

*Subject: Emma Harrison.*
