Chapter 6: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
The call ended.
But Claire’s voice stayed.
It followed me through every room of that old house.
Don’t trust Daniel.
Three words.
Three words that destroyed thirty-five years of memories.
I stood in the hidden office, staring at the phone screen.
Detective Mitchell waited.
She didn’t rush me.
She didn’t ask questions immediately.
She simply watched me struggle with something she already understood.
Trust was not broken like glass.
Glass shattered loudly.
Trust disappeared quietly.
One moment, someone was family.
The next moment, every memory you shared with them became a question.
Daniel stood near the basement stairs.
He had heard enough.
His face was pale.
“Michael…”
I turned toward him.
The man who taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who held Emma when she was born.
The man who cried beside me when Claire’s funeral ended.
“Did you know?””
His expression tightened.
“Know what?””
“About this place.””
“No.””
“About Claire being alive.””
Daniel looked away.
That was all I needed to see.
“You knew.””
He shook his head.
“Not everything.””
I stepped closer.
“Then tell me what you knew.””
Detective Mitchell moved between us.
“Everyone needs to calm down.””
But I couldn’t.
My daughter had almost died.
My wife had disappeared.
And my brother had been carrying secrets for years.
“Seven years, Daniel.””
My voice cracked.
“Seven years you let me believe my wife abandoned us.””
“I didn’t.””
“You knew she wasn’t dead.””
“I knew she might not be.””
The words hit me.
“Might not be?””
Daniel ran his hands through his hair.
“I was trying to find proof.””
“You had proof.””
“I had pieces.””
He pointed around the room.
“Like this.””
I looked at the files.
The pictures.
The documents.
The evidence someone had hidden.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Claire told me not to.””
Silence.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“Before she disappeared, she contacted me.””
My chest tightened.
“You talked to her?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The night before the accident.””
I stared at him.
“The night before she died?””
Daniel nodded.
“She called me.””
“Why?””
His eyes lowered.
“She said she discovered something about the company.””
I looked at the documents scattered across the desk.
“What?””
“Someone was stealing money.””
Detective Mitchell picked up a folder.
“How much?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Millions.””
The room went quiet.
I had built Harrison Global from nothing.
Long nights.
Borrowed money.
Missed birthdays.
Sacrifices.
It was the company I planned to leave for Emma.
The company everyone knew she would inherit.
“What did Claire find?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then opened a folder.
Inside were bank records.
Fake accounts.
Hidden transfers.
Names.
My eyes scanned the pages.
Then stopped.
Because one name appeared repeatedly.
Vivian.
Not her current name.
Another name.
A name I had never heard.
“Who is she?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Her real name is Vanessa Cole.””
Detective Mitchell looked up.
“Cole?””
She searched her database.
A few seconds later, her expression changed.
“You know that name?””
She nodded slowly.
“Vanessa Cole disappeared seven years ago.””
“Like Claire.””
“Yes.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
Two women.
Two disappearances.
One family.
One company.
“What is the connection?””
Nobody answered.
Then a sound came from upstairs.
A floorboard creaked.
Everyone froze.
Detective Mitchell immediately raised her hand.
The officers moved.
Someone was inside the house.
My heart raced.
Because whoever was here…
Was watching us.
A shadow moved past the basement door.
“Police!”” an officer shouted.
Footsteps.
Running.
The officers chased after them.
I followed.
“Stay back!”” Detective Mitchell yelled.
But I couldn’t.
Not anymore.
I had spent years waiting for answers.
Now they were running away from me.
We reached the kitchen.
The back door slammed open.
An officer tackled the person outside.
A woman screamed.
“Let me go!””
My blood stopped.
That voice.
I knew it.
I stepped outside.
Rain poured down.
The woman turned.
And my entire world collapsed.
“Claire.””
She stared at me.
Older.
Tired.
Broken.
But alive.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Seven years disappeared.
I saw the woman who danced with me in our first apartment.
The woman who held my hand when Emma was born.
The woman I thought I lost forever.
Then I saw something else.
Fear.
Claire wasn’t happy to see me.
She was terrified.
“Michael…”
I walked toward her.
Slowly.
Almost afraid she would vanish.
“You’re alive.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I know.””
“Why?””
The question came out before I could stop it.
Why did you leave?
Why didn’t you come home?
Why did you let me mourn you?
Claire looked down.
“I tried.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice broke.
“You didn’t.””
She flinched.
And I hated that I wanted to believe her.
“Michael, I was trying to protect Emma.””
“By disappearing?””
“By surviving.””
The answer silenced me.
Detective Mitchell stepped forward.
“We need to talk somewhere safe.””
Claire looked at her.
“No.””
Everyone stopped.
“No?””
Claire looked toward the house.
“They know I’m here.””
“Who?””
Her eyes moved to me.
Then to Daniel.
“Both of them.””
My heart dropped.
“Both of who?””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“Vivian.””
Then she looked at my brother.
“And Daniel.””
Daniel stepped back.
“What?””
Claire’s eyes filled with sadness.
“I’m sorry.””
He stared at her.
“You think I’m involved?””
“I think you were manipulated.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“After everything I did for you?””
Claire’s expression changed.
“Exactly.””
A strange silence passed between them.
I looked between my wife and brother.
“What does that mean?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“I never asked Daniel to hide the truth from you.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“I asked him to keep you alive.””
The rain fell harder.
Nobody spoke.
Then Claire reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
“I found proof of who was behind everything.””
Detective Mitchell immediately stepped forward.
“What’s on it?””
Claire looked at me.
“The person who planned my disappearance.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The person who arranged the accident.””
A car engine suddenly roared in the distance.
Everyone turned.
Headlights cut through the darkness.
A black SUV accelerated toward the property.
Detective Mitchell shouted.
“Move!””
The vehicle crashed through the gate.
Someone inside threw something toward us.
A small device.
It landed near Claire’s feet.
She looked at it.
Her face turned white.
“Oh no.””
“What is it?””
She grabbed my arm.
“Michael, get Emma.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Claire looked toward the road.
“They know she’s awake.””
The SUV disappeared into the rain.
Detective Mitchell picked up the object carefully.
A phone.
It had one new message.
She read it.
Then looked at me.
Her expression was filled with alarm.
May you like
The message was only six words.
*The second attempt starts tonight.*
