Amused

Chapter 9: The Recording in the Wall

The photograph arrived at 11:38 a.m.

Marcus stared at it until Richard gently took the phone from his hand.

“Don't respond yet,” the attorney said.

“We don't know who sent it, and we don't know whether the image is genuine.””

Marcus barely heard him.

The silver USB drive looked ordinary. A small scratch crossed its metal casing, and a piece of blue tape had been wrapped around one end.

But beneath the photograph was the sentence that wouldn't leave Marcus's mind.

Ask Danielle what happened before the ambulance.

For three years, Marcus had remembered the final night of Danielle's life as a blur of fear and fluorescent light.

She had collapsed near the kitchen doorway. He had called emergency services, knelt beside her, and held her hand while the dispatcher instructed him to check her breathing.

The paramedics had arrived within minutes.

At the hospital, doctors had told him that Danielle's condition was critical. They had tried everything they could, but she had died the following morning.

Marcus had never questioned the timeline.

Now he wondered whether someone else had been in the house before he arrived at the kitchen doorway.

He looked at Richard.

“Could Paul have been there?””

“We don't know.””

“Could he have done something to Danielle?””

“Marcus, we have no evidence that he caused her medical emergency. Don't let an anonymous message turn suspicion into certainty.””

Marcus forced himself to breathe.

Richard was right.

The message could be a threat, a manipulation, or an attempt to provoke him into making a reckless decision.

But it could also be a clue.

Richard called Evelyn and told her about the photograph. She immediately asked Marcus to forward the original message without altering it.

She also contacted the appropriate investigators regarding the suspected financial fraud.

“Until we know more,” she said, “don't try to locate the drive yourself or confront Paul. If the device exists, we need to establish where it came from and whether the recording has been altered.””

Marcus nodded, though he hated waiting.

He wanted answers.

He wanted to know whether Vanessa had been lying about everything, whether Paul had exploited her, and whether the woman he had loved had spent her final months frightened of someone in her own family.

But above all, he wanted to make sure Jordan was safe.

He drove to Claire's house.

Jordan was sitting at the kitchen table, drawing a rocket ship on a sheet of paper. Caleb stood beside him, arranging colored pencils by length.

When Marcus entered, Jordan looked up immediately.

“Dad?””

Marcus crouched beside him.

“Hey, buddy.””

“Are you mad?””

“No.””

“Vanessa said you might be.””

Marcus glanced at Claire, who stood near the sink.

He sat beside his son.

“Vanessa shouldn't have put that worry on you. I'm not mad at you for anything you've told me.””

Jordan looked down at his drawing.

“She said she was sorry.””

“Did she?””

“She left another message.””

Claire retrieved her phone and showed Marcus the saved voicemail.

Vanessa's voice sounded strained and breathless.

*Jordan, sweetheart, please listen to me. I love you. I know you're upset, but you have to understand that adults make mistakes. If you keep telling people things, your father could lose the house.

Caleb could lose everything. I don't want that to happen. Please don't let strangers destroy our family.*

Marcus felt anger rise with every word.

The message ended.

Jordan kept his eyes on the paper.

“Is the house going to be taken away?””

Marcus put an arm around him.

“No. One message can't decide what happens to our home. We're dealing with the financial questions, and you are not responsible for them.””

“But what if the money is gone?””

“We'll work through it.””

Jordan picked at the edge of his drawing.

“Vanessa said you would hate her if I told you everything.””

Marcus swallowed.

“I have strong feelings about what happened. But those feelings are mine to manage. You never have to hide something to protect an adult from being upset.””

Jordan looked at him for a long time.

Then he leaned into his father's side.

Marcus held him, wishing he could somehow return the months his son had spent believing that telling the truth might cost him his family.

After lunch, Richard called with an update.

Denise Harper had provided the electronic files from her company. A forensic specialist had found that the disputed amendment and the accompanying letter had been assembled after Danielle's death.

The document contained several copied sections from genuine estate papers, but the paragraph authorizing Paul to petition for control of the trust had been inserted later.

The signature attributed to Marcus had been copied from an old mortgage document.

The witness signature attributed to Thomas Reed had been taken from a scanned family document.

The evidence strongly suggested deliberate fabrication.

But one question remained.

Who had assembled the packet?

The computer metadata pointed toward a device associated with Vanessa. However, Richard cautioned that the device might have been accessed by someone else.

“We need to establish who used it,” he explained.

“And we need to trace the money separately.””

Marcus thought about Vanessa's statement that she wasn't the only person who had signed the papers.

“Can we prove Paul was involved?””

“We have a connection between him and the consultancy, plus the transfers into his account. That warrants investigation. But we need the original records and his explanation.””

Richard paused.

“There's also a positive development. The bank has placed a restriction on the remaining trust assets and is reviewing the disputed transactions. We can't promise recovery yet, but the funds that remain are protected for now.””

Marcus released a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

“Thank you.””

After the call, he returned to the living room.

Jordan and Caleb were building a cardboard rocket ship from boxes Claire had saved for recycling.

Caleb had drawn windows on the sides. Jordan was cutting out a paper control panel.

“Captain Jordan,” Caleb announced, “we're going to Mars.””

Jordan smiled.

“You can't go to Mars without a launch code.””

Caleb handed him a scribbled sheet of paper.

“Here.””

Jordan pretended to inspect it.

“This says banana.””

“It's a secret code.””

Marcus stood in the doorway, watching them laugh.

For a moment, the investigation seemed distant.

Then his phone vibrated again.

A message from Vanessa.

I can tell you where the recording is. Meet me alone.

Marcus showed the message to Richard.

The attorney called immediately.

“Don't meet her alone,” he said.

“Ask her to communicate through me.””

Marcus typed a brief response.

Tell Richard what you know. I won't meet privately.

Vanessa replied almost instantly.

You don't understand. Paul has the original. But there's another copy, and I know where it is.

Richard read the message.

“Ask her to provide the location and explain how she knows the recording exists. No promises, no threats.””

Marcus sent the question.

For several minutes, there was no response.

Then Vanessa sent an address.

It was the address of their house.

The message continued.

Behind the panel in the old study. Danielle put it there when she stayed with us before she died.

Marcus stared at the screen.

The old study was a small room off the hallway, now used to store boxes, spare bedding, and the boys' old school projects. Danielle had stayed there during a weekend visit shortly before her final hospitalization, when she had come to help Marcus sort paperwork.

He remembered her sitting at the desk, writing letters while he prepared dinner.

He remembered nothing about a panel.

Richard immediately advised him not to search the house alone. They arranged to visit together and document anything they found.

That afternoon, they returned to the house.

Vanessa's car was gone.

Marcus unlocked the front door and led Richard into the study.

The room smelled faintly of dust and cedar. Boxes were stacked against one wall, and a narrow bookshelf stood beside the desk.

Marcus moved the boxes aside.

Behind them was a wooden panel about the size of a sheet of paper. It blended into the wall, its edges almost invisible beneath several layers of paint.

Richard photographed it before touching anything.

The panel came loose with a gentle pull.

Behind it sat a small metal tin.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

It had belonged to Danielle.

She used to keep birthday candles, spare keys, and old photographs inside it. After she died, Marcus had searched the house for her wedding ring and personal letters, but he had never found this box.

He lifted it carefully.

Inside lay a silver USB drive wrapped in blue tape.

Exactly like the one in the photograph.

Beneath it was a folded envelope addressed to Marcus.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

Marcus,

If you've found this, then something happened that I hoped would never happen. I wanted to tell you everything, but I was afraid you would blame yourself for things you could not have known.

Marcus swallowed hard.

There is a recording on this drive. It contains a conversation I had with Paul and another person shortly before I became ill. I did not understand everything I heard at the time, but I understood enough to know that someone was using my father's money and my name without permission.

He stopped reading.

Richard leaned closer.

The letter continued.

I have not accused anyone publicly because I do not have the complete financial records. I am afraid of making a mistake. But if anything happens to me, please make sure Jordan's inheritance is protected.

Marcus felt a cold pressure in his chest.

There is one more thing. If you hear the recording, please listen to the entire conversation before deciding what it means. The person who appears to be helping me may not be the person who is telling the truth.

Danielle's signature was at the bottom.

Marcus looked at Richard.

“Who was she talking about?””

“We won't know until we examine the recording.””

Richard placed the drive in an evidence bag and documented where it had been found. He arranged for a forensic specialist to create a verified copy and examine the files without altering the original.

They waited in the study while the specialist worked remotely.

An hour later, Richard received a secure link to the extracted audio.

He connected his laptop to the small speaker on the desk.

Marcus sat down.

The recording began with the sound of a chair scraping across a floor.

Then Danielle's voice filled the room.

“Paul, I asked you to stop contacting Marcus about the money.””

A man's voice replied.

“You don't understand what you're doing, Danielle.””

“I understand that you took money from an account that wasn't yours.””

“I borrowed it.””

“You had no permission.””

“I was going to repay it.””

“When?””

Silence.

Then another voice entered the conversation.

A woman's voice.

Vanessa.

Marcus gripped the edge of the desk.

“You said this was a misunderstanding,” Vanessa said on the recording.

“You told me Danielle had agreed.””

Paul answered, “She did agree. She just doesn't want to admit it now.””

Danielle's voice became sharper.

“I never agreed to any of this. And if either of you uses my son's inheritance to cover your debts, I will tell Marcus everything.””

Marcus felt his stomach turn.

Vanessa replied, “You don't have to threaten me.””

“Then stop helping him.””

A chair scraped.

Paul's voice dropped.

“You have no idea what happens if I lose everything.””

Danielle answered quietly.

“Then you should have thought about that before you stole.””

There was a long pause.

Then Paul said something that made Marcus sit upright.

“You think Marcus will believe you? He trusts his father more than he trusts you. And if he learns what Robert did, he'll never look at you the same way again.””

The recording crackled.

Danielle's voice trembled.

“What did Robert do?””

Paul laughed.

“You really don't know?””

The audio cut out for several seconds.

When it resumed, Danielle was speaking urgently.

“No. You are not going to put this on Marcus. Whatever happened between you and Robert, you are not dragging his son into it.””

Marcus looked at Richard.

The attorney's face had gone pale.

The recording continued.

Vanessa said, “Paul, you told me Robert had nothing to do with the transfers.””

Paul answered, “I said you couldn't prove it.””

Marcus felt the room tilt.

Then Danielle spoke again.

“If I find out you've touched Jordan's account, I will have the trust frozen. And if anything happens to me, Evelyn will know exactly where to look.””

A thud sounded.

Someone moved away from the microphone.

Paul's voice came from farther away.

“You're making a terrible mistake.””

Danielle answered, “No. I made one when I trusted you.””

The recording ended with the sound of a door slamming.

Marcus sat motionless.

For a moment, he couldn't reconcile the voice he had just heard with the memories he carried of his father.

Richard paused the audio and looked at him.

“We need to authenticate this and establish when it was recorded. We can't conclude that Robert stole anything based on this conversation.””

Marcus nodded numbly.

He wanted to defend his father.

He wanted to dismiss the recording as incomplete or misleading.

But Danielle's voice had been unmistakable.

She had known about the money.

She had confronted Paul.

And Vanessa had been there.

Marcus looked at the letter again.

The person who appears to be helping me may not be the person who is telling the truth.

He thought about Vanessa's frightened expression when he first confronted her about the transfers.

He thought about Paul blaming Robert.

He thought about the forged signatures and the missing money.

Then Richard noticed something in the audio file metadata.

“The recording date is the day before Danielle was hospitalized.””

Marcus felt his heart begin to pound.

He remembered that night clearly now.

He had been working late. Danielle had called him shortly before nine, asking when he would be home.

He had told her he was on his way.

When he arrived, the ambulance was already there.

But he had never asked who called it.

He had assumed Danielle had collapsed while alone.

Richard opened another file from the USB drive.

It was a short audio clip labeled Final.

Marcus stared at the name.

“Play it,” he whispered.

Richard pressed the button.

Danielle's voice emerged, weak and frightened.

“Marcus, if you're hearing this, I need you to know that I didn't take anything from Jordan. I tried to stop them. I tried to make it right.””

A pause.

Then, more quietly:

“Vanessa knows what happened that night. Ask her who called the ambulance.””

The recording ended.

Marcus felt as though the air had been sucked from the room.

He turned toward Richard.

“Who called the ambulance?””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered.

“Marcus,” she whispered, “did you find it?””

“Yes.””

A shaky breath came through the line.

“Then you know.””

“Know what?””

Vanessa began to cry.

“I was there that night.””

Marcus stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

“What happened to Danielle?””

Vanessa's answer came through broken sobs.

“Paul was there before you got home. They argued. Danielle fell, and I called the ambulance.””

Marcus gripped the desk.

“Did you push her?””

“No!””

“Then tell me what happened.””

“I swear I didn't touch her. I was trying to help.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

Vanessa's voice became almost inaudible.

“Because Paul said if I told anyone what happened, he'd tell the police that I had helped him steal the money. He said they'd take Caleb away from me.””

Marcus could barely breathe.

“What did Paul do to Danielle?””

Vanessa was silent for so long that Marcus thought she had hung up.

Then she whispered, “He didn't just steal from her, Marcus. He came to that house to make sure she couldn't stop him.””

Marcus stared at the silver drive on the desk.

“Vanessa,” he said, his voice shaking, “what happened before the ambulance arrived?””

May you like

Her next words changed everything.

“Danielle was alive when I left her.””
