Amused

Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Danielle

Richard Hale arrived at Marcus's house at 7:15 the next morning carrying a leather briefcase and the expression of a man who had spent the night dreading a conversation.

Marcus had slept less than two hours.

He had checked on both boys before dawn, then made breakfast while Vanessa remained upstairs. He packed Jordan's lunch himself, adding the apple slices his son liked and a note that said, I love you. See you after school.

When Jordan came downstairs, he looked surprised to find his father standing beside the stove.

“Did you make pancakes?”” he asked.

Marcus smiled.

“Chocolate chips and everything.””

Jordan glanced toward the staircase.

“Is Vanessa coming down?””

“I don't know, buddy.””

The boy nodded and sat at the table.

He ate slowly, occasionally watching the stairs, as though he expected someone to appear and tell him he was doing it wrong.

Marcus pulled out the chair beside him.

“You can eat as much as you're hungry for.””

Jordan looked at his plate.

“I know.””

But he said it like someone repeating a lesson he wasn't sure he believed.

Marcus didn't push.

When Richard knocked, Marcus opened the front door and led him into the study.

“Before we start,” Richard said, “I need to ask you something. Has Vanessa accessed any of your personal accounts or legal documents?””

Marcus placed the bank statements on the desk.

“I found these withdrawals. Then I found an authorization form with a signature that looks like mine.””

Richard examined the pages.

“Did you sign this?””

“No.””

“Did you authorize Vanessa to sign on your behalf?””

“No.””

Richard took off his glasses.

“Then don't alter these documents. Don't delete emails. Don't move any remaining trust funds. We'll need copies of the originals and a complete transaction history.””

Marcus nodded.

“Now tell me what Danielle was protecting Jordan from.””

Richard opened his briefcase and removed a thick folder.

“Danielle came to our office about six months before she died. She wanted to establish a trust for Jordan and make sure certain family members couldn't gain access to it.””

“Which family members?””

“Her older brother, Paul.””

Marcus frowned.

“I thought Danielle barely spoke to him.””

“She didn't. They had a difficult relationship.””

“Why?””

Richard opened the folder.

“Paul had struggled with money for years. Danielle had helped him financially more than once. Eventually, she discovered that he had been using her personal information to apply for credit and open accounts.””

Marcus stared at him.

“What?””

“She confronted him. He denied everything, but she found enough documentation to cut off contact. When she became ill, she was concerned he might try to claim part of her estate or pressure you into giving him access to Jordan's inheritance.””

Marcus sank into his chair.

“Danielle never told me about this.””

“She wanted to handle it herself. She was embarrassed and didn't want to create another burden for you.””

Richard turned a page.

“She established the trust to ensure that Jordan's inheritance would remain protected, even if something happened to her. She named Evelyn Brooks as trustee and gave her strict instructions regarding withdrawals.””

“Then how did Vanessa get access?””

“That's what we need to determine.””

Marcus looked at the bank authorization.

“Vanessa mentioned Danielle's money last night. She said there was more than people realized.””

Richard's expression darkened.

“Did she say anything else?””

“She said I should ask you what happened to the account Danielle set up before she died.””

Richard leaned back.

“Then she knows about the trust.””

“How?””

“I don't know yet.””

Marcus stood and walked to the window.

Outside, Jordan was putting his backpack into the car. Caleb stood beside him, holding a lunchbox.

The boys were speaking quietly.

For a moment, Marcus could almost pretend the previous evening hadn't happened.

Then Jordan glanced toward the house.

The instant he saw his father watching, he looked away.

Marcus turned back to Richard.

“I'm not letting this continue.””

Richard closed the folder.

“You have several separate issues. The suspected unauthorized transfers. The forged documents sent to the school.

The treatment of the children. And now the possibility that Vanessa knew about a protected trust and deliberately tried to move Jordan away from people who might investigate.””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“What do I do first?””

“Protect the boys. Preserve the evidence. Contact Evelyn. And don't make threats you can't enforce.””

Marcus nodded.

Richard took out his phone.

“I'll call Evelyn now.””

The call went to voicemail. Richard left a message requesting an urgent meeting, then turned back to Marcus.

“There's one more thing. Danielle's trust included a letter addressed to Jordan, to be delivered when he turned eighteen.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does it say?””

“I don't know. Evelyn has the original.””

“Why didn't you tell me about it before?””

“Because it wasn't intended for you to read unless a specific condition was met.””

“What condition?””

Richard hesitated.

“Danielle wanted Jordan's guardian to contact Evelyn if anyone attempted to transfer him out of his home or school under circumstances suggesting coercion, neglect, or financial manipulation.””

Marcus felt a cold weight settle in his stomach.

“She anticipated something like this?””

“Not necessarily Vanessa. Danielle was worried about what could happen if the wrong person gained control of Jordan's inheritance.””

Marcus looked down at the bank statement.

“And she was right to worry.””

A knock sounded at the study door.

Vanessa stood in the doorway wearing a cream blouse and dark trousers, her hair perfectly arranged.

“Richard,” she said, smiling as though nothing unusual had happened.

“I didn't realize you were coming over.””

Richard rose politely.

“Good morning, Vanessa.””

She glanced at the papers on the desk.

“Are we discussing family finances?””

Marcus answered before Richard could.

“We're discussing the unauthorized withdrawals from Jordan's trust.””

Vanessa's smile vanished.

“Marcus, we agreed we would talk about this privately.””

“No, we didn't.””

She stepped into the room and closed the door behind her.

“I made temporary transfers. That's all.””

Richard placed a hand on the folder.

“Vanessa, did you sign Marcus's name to the school transfer request?””

Her face flushed.

“This is between my husband and me.””

“Did you?””

She looked at Marcus.

“You're bringing a lawyer into our marriage?””

“You brought my signature into school records.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Jordan needs a different school. His behavior is getting worse, and his father refuses to acknowledge it.””

Richard remained calm.

“Have you obtained a professional assessment supporting that claim?””

“No.””

“Have you discussed the proposed transfer with Jordan's teacher?””

“I don't need permission to make every decision.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Vanessa stared at him.

Marcus watched her confidence falter.

Richard continued, “If you have legitimate concerns about Jordan's education, there are proper ways to address them. Falsifying a parent's consent is not one of them.””

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

“You're assuming I forged something.””

“The signature is disputed. The school will need to determine how the document was submitted.””

She looked at Marcus.

“You're going to let him threaten me in my own home?””

Marcus shook his head.

“He's explaining the consequences of what happened.””

Vanessa turned toward the door.

Then she stopped.

“Fine. If you want to bring lawyers into this, maybe we should discuss what Danielle did before she died.””

Marcus stood.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa's eyes moved toward Richard.

For a second, she seemed to reconsider speaking.

Then she said, “Ask Evelyn Brooks why Danielle was so desperate to keep her brother away from Jordan.””

Richard's expression changed.

“Where did you hear that name?””

Vanessa's face went blank.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You know Evelyn?””

“I know of her.””

“How?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't have to explain every conversation I've ever had.””

Richard closed the folder.

“Actually, if those conversations involved a protected trust and potentially unauthorized transfers, we may need to establish exactly what you knew and when.””

Vanessa laughed without humor.

“You people have already decided I'm guilty.””

“No,” Richard replied.

“We're trying to understand what happened.””

“Then understand this.”” Vanessa pointed at Marcus.

“He has been emotionally absent for years. I held this family together. I fed his son, dressed him, took him to school, and helped him through nightmares while Marcus was busy earning money to prove he was a good father.””

Marcus absorbed the accusation without interrupting.

Vanessa's eyes glistened.

“And now, because I made a few decisions he doesn't like, he's ready to throw me away.””

“I should have paid closer attention,” Marcus said.

“I should have been there more. But that doesn't excuse what you did.””

She looked at him as though he had struck her.

“Then you really are choosing him.””

“I'm choosing to protect both boys.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You'll regret this.””

She left the study and slammed the door.

Richard waited until her footsteps faded.

Then he said, “I think we should arrange for the boys to stay somewhere else temporarily.””

Marcus nodded.

“My sister lives twenty minutes away. She has a spare room.””

“Good. Speak with her. And don't tell Vanessa every step of your plan before we've taken it.””

Marcus called his sister, Claire, who agreed to take the boys for a few nights. He told her only that there was a serious family situation and that the children needed a quiet place.

By lunchtime, he had packed their clothes and school supplies.

Jordan stood beside his bedroom door, holding a small backpack.

“Are we moving?”” he asked.

“Just for a few days.””

“Did I do something?””

Marcus knelt.

“No. This isn't because of anything you did.””

“Is it because I told you about the bathroom?””

“No, buddy. You did the right thing.””

Jordan looked toward the hallway.

“Will Vanessa be angry?””

Marcus struggled to answer honestly without frightening him further.

“She might be upset. But you don't have to manage her feelings.””

Jordan nodded slowly.

Then he reached beneath his bed and pulled out a small blue notebook.

Marcus stared at it.

“What's that?””

Jordan held it against his chest.

“My notes.””

“What notes?””

Jordan looked down.

“Things I write when I think I might forget.””

Marcus sat on the edge of the bed.

“Can I see?””

Jordan hesitated, then opened the notebook.

The pages were filled with dates and short sentences written in careful, uneven handwriting.

March 4: Vanessa said I couldn't have dessert because I cried about Mom.

April 19: Vanessa took my lunch money because I talked back.

May 2: Caleb gave me half his sandwich.

June 11: I stayed in the bathroom until Caleb let me out.

Marcus felt sick.

He turned another page.

August 8: Vanessa said Dad would send me away if I told him.

Then another.

September 15: She said the money was supposed to be hers.

Marcus stopped.

“What money, Jordan?””

The boy looked frightened.

“I don't know. I heard her on the phone.””

“What did she say?””

Jordan swallowed.

“She said Grandma Danielle promised something to somebody. And if Dad found out, she would lose everything.””

Marcus felt the room tilt.

“Who was she talking to?””

Jordan shook his head.

“I couldn't see.””

“Did you hear a name?””

The boy hesitated.

Then he pointed to the last page.

There, written in pencil, were three words.

Uncle Paul is back.

Marcus stared at them.

He had never met Danielle's brother in person.

He had seen a photograph once, years ago, but Danielle had rarely spoken about him.

“Jordan, when did you hear that name?””

“Last month.””

“Did you see him?””

Jordan nodded.

“He came to the house when you were working. Vanessa told me he was a friend.””

Marcus looked at the notebook again.

Beneath the name, Jordan had written one more sentence.

He said he was going to get what belonged to him.

Marcus felt every muscle in his body tighten.

He took a photograph of the page and showed it to Richard, who had returned to collect the documents.

Richard read it twice.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“Paul Reed was supposed to have no contact with Jordan.””

“Why?””

“Because Danielle specifically named him in the trust restrictions.””

Marcus looked toward the hallway, where Caleb was waiting with his backpack.

He thought about the withdrawals, the false signatures, the secret phone calls, and Vanessa's determination to get Jordan transferred before anyone investigated.

Then his phone rang.

The caller ID displayed an unfamiliar number.

Marcus answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through, smooth and unhurried.

“Marcus Reed?””

“Yes. Who's this?””

“My name is Paul. Danielle's brother.””

Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.

“What do you want?””

May you like

Paul chuckled softly.

“I think it's time we talked about what your wife has been doing with my family's money.””
