Chapter 6: The Man at the Front Door
Marcus did not answer immediately.
He looked at Richard, who had heard enough of the conversation to recognize the name.
Richard held out his hand, silently asking Marcus to put the call on speaker.
Marcus did.
“Paul,” he said, “why are you calling me?””
“Because your wife hasn't been returning my messages.””
Marcus felt a surge of anger.
“My wife has no reason to speak with you.””
Paul laughed.
“That's an interesting thing to say, considering she's been handling business that concerns both of us.””
“What business?””
“Danielle's estate.””
Richard leaned toward the phone.
“This is Richard Hale, counsel for Marcus Reed. Any discussion concerning Danielle's trust should go through the appropriate legal channels.””
There was a brief silence.
Then Paul said, “Richard. Of course. I wondered when you'd show up.””
Richard's face hardened.
“You know who I am?””
“I know you were involved when Danielle decided to cut me out of everything.””
Marcus glanced at the attorney.
“Cut you out of what?””
Paul sighed theatrically.
“Danielle inherited money from our father. She promised me that if anything happened to her, she'd make sure I was taken care of. Then she got sick, and suddenly there were lawyers, documents, and restrictions.””
“Did Danielle leave you money?”” Marcus asked.
“Not directly.””
“Then what are you talking about?””
“She was holding assets that belonged to the family.””
Richard interrupted.
“That's incorrect. The trust was funded with Danielle's inheritance and was established for Jordan's benefit.””
“That's your interpretation.””
“No,” Richard said.
“That's what the documents state.””
Paul's tone cooled.
“Then perhaps you should explain why Vanessa has been helping me recover what Danielle owed me.””
Marcus felt his stomach drop.
“Helping you how?””
“Ask her about the transfers.””
Marcus looked at the bank statements on the desk.
“How much money have you received?””
Paul laughed again.
“You should ask your wife. She's the one who arranged everything.””
Richard reached for a pen and wrote something on a notepad.
“Paul, do you have documentation supporting your claim that Danielle owed you money?””
“Of course.””
“Then send it through counsel.””
“I don't take orders from you.””
“Then don't expect us to take your claims seriously.””
The line went silent.
Marcus thought the call had ended, but Paul spoke again.
“Marcus, I'm going to give you one piece of advice. Don't let Vanessa convince you that she's the villain in this story. Danielle could be difficult.
She made promises, then changed her mind when she got sick. Vanessa is simply trying to make things right.””
Marcus stared at the phone.
“You've never met me. You don't know what Vanessa has done.””
“I know she has a husband who trusts her and a child who needs her. And I know Danielle left behind a boy who will inherit more money than he understands.””
Richard's expression turned cold.
“Do not contact Jordan.””
Paul ignored him.
“Marcus, if you care about your family, you'll stop digging. Vanessa has already done more than she should have to keep this situation from becoming ugly.””
Then the call ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Marcus set the phone on the desk.
“Did he just threaten my son?””
Richard rubbed his jaw.
“Not explicitly. But he has confirmed that he knows about the trust and has been communicating with Vanessa.””
“Can we stop him from contacting Jordan?””
“We can take steps to protect Jordan and document any further contact. I also want Evelyn Brooks involved immediately.””
Richard called Evelyn again.
This time, she answered.
After a brief exchange, Richard put the call on speaker.
“Evelyn,” he said, “we have a problem. Marcus has discovered unauthorized withdrawals from the trust, forged school documents, and evidence that Vanessa has been communicating with Paul Reed.””
There was a pause.
Then Evelyn asked, “Has Paul contacted Jordan directly?””
Marcus answered.
“Jordan says Paul visited our home last month.””
Evelyn exhaled slowly.
“Then we need to meet today.””
“Can you tell us what's going on?”” Marcus asked.
“I can explain the trust and the restrictions Danielle put in place. But I need to review the records before I make assumptions about the withdrawals.””
“Did Danielle tell you she was worried about Paul?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't she tell me?””
Evelyn's voice softened.
“She wanted to protect you from a family conflict she believed she could resolve privately. By the time she understood how serious the situation was, she was already ill.””
Marcus looked down.
That sounded like Danielle. She had always tried to carry difficult things herself, especially when she believed someone she loved might be hurt by the truth.
But it was also the reason he was now standing in a study, trying to reconstruct a part of her life he had never known existed.
“Evelyn,” Richard said, “can you confirm whether the trust allows transfers for household expenses?””
“No. Absolutely not. The trustee must approve distributions, and only for Jordan's benefit. No parent or guardian can unilaterally redirect the funds.””
Marcus stared at the bank statement.
“Then the withdrawals were unauthorized.””
“If the money came from the trust and wasn't approved by the trustee, yes.””
“Can you freeze the remaining balance?””
“I'll contact the financial institution immediately.””
Marcus closed his eyes in relief.
At least that was one thing he could do.
After the call, Richard helped him arrange a meeting with Evelyn for that afternoon. They agreed that Marcus would take the boys to Claire's house before returning to speak with Vanessa.
He didn't want a confrontation in front of the children.
When Marcus reached Claire's house, she welcomed the boys with warm hugs and a plate of cookies. Caleb immediately asked whether he could play video games, while Jordan stood beside Marcus, watching the unfamiliar room.
Claire noticed.
“Hey, sweetheart,” she said gently.
“You can make yourself at home here.””
Jordan nodded.
“Thank you.””
“You don't have to thank me for giving you a safe place to stay.””
Jordan looked at Marcus.
The words seemed to mean something to him.
Marcus kissed both boys on the forehead before leaving.
At the front door, Jordan caught his sleeve.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“If Vanessa says I'm lying, will you still believe me?””
Marcus crouched in front of him.
“I'll listen to you. I'll look at the facts. And I'll never punish you for telling me something that happened.””
Jordan's eyes searched his face.
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
The boy finally let go of his sleeve.
Marcus drove home with his hands tight on the steering wheel.
Vanessa's car was in the driveway.
He found her in the kitchen, sitting at the table with a stack of bills and a calculator. She looked up as he entered.
“Where are the boys?””
“Safe.””
Her expression hardened.
“You took them to Claire's?””
“Yes.””
“You had no right to do that without discussing it with me.””
“They need a few quiet days.””
“You're making me look like a monster.””
Marcus set his keys on the counter.
“I'm not making you look like anything. I'm responding to what happened.””
She pushed the bills aside.
“Did Paul call you?””
Marcus stopped.
“Yes.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.
“What did he say?””
“He told me you've been helping him recover money from Danielle's estate.””
Vanessa looked down at the table.
Marcus pulled out a chair and sat opposite her.
“Tell me the truth.””
She rubbed her forehead.
“Paul contacted me a year ago. He said Danielle had promised him part of her inheritance.””
“Did you know about the trust?””
“Not at first.””
“When did you find out?””
“After I started helping him.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You helped him access Jordan's education account?””
“I didn't know it was protected the way Richard says it is.””
“You signed my name to the authorization.””
“You told me I could handle household finances!””
“I never told you to impersonate me.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to help.””
“Who?””
She looked away.
“Paul.””
“Why?””
“Because he said Danielle had cheated him.””
Marcus felt a bitter laugh rise in his throat.
“And you believed him over your husband?””
“He had documents.””
“What documents?””
“He showed me an agreement with Danielle's signature.””
“Where is it?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“At home.””
“Where?””
“In my closet.””
Marcus stood.
“Then we're going to get it.””
She rose too, blocking his path.
“You can't just go through my things.””
“It's a document that may explain why my son's money was taken.””
“It's private.””
“So was Jordan's education account. You didn't seem concerned about privacy when you moved the money.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You think everything is about Jordan!””
“No. I think this is about money, control, and whatever you and Paul have been hiding.””
She stepped aside.
Marcus walked upstairs to their bedroom. Vanessa followed, repeatedly telling him that he was making a mistake.
Inside the closet, he found a black document box behind a row of shoes. It contained bank statements, copies of emails, and a folder labeled Danielle Reed—Inheritance.
He opened the folder.
The first document was a photocopy of a handwritten agreement.
It appeared to bear Danielle's signature.
The document stated that Danielle had borrowed $50,000 from Paul and promised to repay it from her inheritance.
Marcus read it carefully.
Something about the signature bothered him.
The D was too large. The final stroke was wrong.
He remembered the letter Danielle had left in the envelope. He had seen her signature thousands of times.
This one didn't look right.
“Where did Paul get this?”” he asked.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
“He said Danielle gave it to him.””
“When?””
“Before she died.””
Marcus turned the page.
There was no witness signature, no notary, and no supporting bank record showing that Paul had transferred fifty thousand dollars to Danielle.
Instead, the next document was a spreadsheet listing transfers from Jordan's trust to an account ending in 4821.
The total was $27,250.
Marcus's mouth went dry.
He knew those digits.
They matched the unfamiliar account on his bank statements.
“Whose account is this?”” he asked.
Vanessa stared at the floor.
“Paul's.””
Marcus felt as though someone had punched him.
“You transferred Jordan's money to Paul.””
“He said it was repayment for what Danielle owed him.””
“You don't know that Danielle owed him anything.””
“I believed him!””
“You forged my signature.””
“I thought I was helping.””
“You told the school Jordan was unstable. You tried to transfer him before anyone looked at these records. Why?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She covered her face.
“Of losing everything.””
Marcus stood motionless.
Then she lowered her hands and looked at him.
“Paul told me that if the trust was investigated, everyone would find out what Danielle had done.””
Marcus frowned.
“What had Danielle done?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know. He said she had hidden something from you. He said the money was only the beginning.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Then why are you protecting him?””
“Because he threatened me.””
The room went silent.
Marcus stepped closer.
“What did he threaten you with?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“He said if I didn't help him get the money, he'd tell you what happened the night Danielle went to the hospital.””
Marcus felt his blood turn cold.
Danielle had been taken to the hospital after collapsing at home. The doctors had diagnosed a sudden medical emergency, and despite their efforts, she had died less than twenty-four hours later.
Marcus had been there.
He had held her hand.
He had kissed her forehead.
He had never imagined there was anything else to know about that night.
“What does Paul know about Danielle's final night?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.
“He says he was there.””
Marcus stared at her.
“That is impossible. I was the only family member at the hospital.””
“He said he came to the house before the ambulance.””
Marcus felt his hands go numb.
“Did you believe him?””
“I don't know what to believe anymore.””
Marcus looked at the documents scattered across the bed.
The forged signature.
The false debt.
The transfers.
The secret phone calls.
And now, a claim that Danielle's brother had been present on the night she died.
He gathered the papers into the box.
“I'm taking these to Richard.””
Vanessa reached for his arm.
“Marcus, please.””
He stepped away.
“Don't.””
“I know I've done terrible things. But I didn't want to hurt Jordan.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then why did you keep doing it?””
She began to cry.
He felt no satisfaction watching her break down. He remembered the woman who had sat beside Jordan during thunderstorms, the woman who had once made him believe his son could have a loving stepmother.
But he could no longer separate those memories from the child who had asked permission to eat.
“I don't know who you are anymore,” he said.
He carried the box downstairs and placed it on the passenger seat of his truck.
As he reached for the driver's door, his phone rang.
It was Evelyn.
“Marcus,” she said urgently, “I've reviewed the trust records. There's a problem much bigger than the withdrawals.””
“What problem?””
“The account Paul has been receiving money through isn't the only account connected to the trust.””
Marcus gripped the edge of the truck door.
“What do you mean?””
“Danielle established a second fund shortly before she died. It was meant to remain untouched until Jordan turned eighteen.””
“Where is it?””
Evelyn paused.
“The original documents indicate that the beneficiary designation was changed after Danielle's death.””
Marcus felt his heart pound.
“Changed by whom?””
Evelyn's answer came quietly.
“Someone using your name.””
Marcus looked back at the house.
Behind the upstairs window, Vanessa stood watching him.
May you like
Then Evelyn added one more sentence.
“And Marcus, there's a witness signature on that change. The name belongs to someone who died two years before Danielle signed the document.””
