Amused

Chapter 5: The Wedding That Became A Scandal

The Mercer Grand Hotel had never been quieter.

Not because there was no sound.

Because everyone was trying not to make one.

The ceremony hall was filled with whispers.

Guests who had arrived expecting champagne and celebration were now staring at their phones.

The headlines were already spreading.

I saw one when Emma rushed into the bridal suite.

Her face was pale.

“Claire.””

I looked at her.

“What happened?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation was worse than the answer.

“Someone leaked a story.””

My stomach dropped.

“What story?””

Emma handed me her phone.

The headline appeared across the screen.

*MERCER HEIR HIDES SECRET CHILD BEFORE HIGH-PROFILE WEDDING*

My hands started shaking.

Below the headline was a photograph.

Not the one Vivian showed me.

A new one.

Ethan holding Lily.

Charlotte standing beside him.

The picture had been taken recently.

The caption was worse.

*Sources claim Ethan Mercer abandoned his former fiancée and concealed the truth from his future wife.*

I looked up.

“Who sent this?””

Emma swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

But I knew.

Everyone knew.

Because there was only one person who benefited.

Vivian.

I walked downstairs.

Not because I was ready to marry Ethan.

Because I needed answers.

The ceremony hall looked exactly as it had an hour earlier.

Flowers.

Candles.

White chairs.

A beautiful place for a wedding.

A terrible place for a disaster.

Ethan stood near the altar.

He looked like he hadn’t moved.

When he saw me, relief crossed his face.

Then guilt replaced it.

“Claire.””

I stopped several feet away.

“Did you know?””

His eyebrows pulled together.

“Know what?””

“That someone was going to release this.””

“No.””

I studied him.

He looked genuinely shocked.

That almost made me feel worse.

Because it meant someone else had been controlling both of us.

“Your mother did this.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He looked toward Vivian.

She stood across the room surrounded by guests.

Perfect posture.

Perfect expression.

Like she wasn’t watching a family collapse.

Ethan walked toward her.

“Mom.””

People turned.

Vivian remained calm.

“What?””

“Did you leak that story?””

A few guests gasped.

She smiled.

“Lower your voice.””

“No.””

His voice shook with anger.

“For once, answer me.””

Vivian looked around.

“You’re embarrassing yourself.””

“You embarrassed Lily.””

That was the first time I saw Vivian lose control.

Only slightly.

But it was there.

“Do not use that child against me.””

Ethan stared at her.

“You used her first.””

The room became silent.

I watched my future husband confront the woman who had controlled him for years.

And I realized something.

Ethan wasn’t just fighting me anymore.

He was fighting the person who had shaped every fear inside him.

Vivian lowered her voice.

“I did what was necessary.””

“You destroyed my wedding.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Your secrets destroyed your wedding.””

I felt everyone watching.

Judging.

Waiting.

I hated that she had turned my pain into entertainment.

I stepped forward.

“Why?””

Vivian looked at me.

“Why what?””

“Why wait until today?””

She smiled.

“Because today was the only day you couldn’t run.””

The words hit.

Because they were true.

She had chosen the moment carefully.

The dress.

The guests.

The cameras.

The vows.

Everything.

I looked at Ethan.

“Did she threaten you?””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“Before.””

I stepped closer.

“Did your mother threaten you when you were with Charlotte?””

Ethan looked away.

And that was answer enough.

Vivian immediately interrupted.

“Claire, you are making assumptions.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I’m asking questions.””

Then I turned back to Ethan.

“Did she?””

He took a long breath.

“Yes.””

The room exploded with whispers.

Vivian’s face hardened.

“Ethan.””

He continued.

“She told me if I stayed with Charlotte, she would destroy her family’s business.””

Charlotte appeared near the doorway.

She heard him.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“And I believed you left because you wanted to.””

Ethan looked at her.

“I was wrong.””

Charlotte looked away.

“You were scared.””

“Yes.””

“And I paid for your fear.””

He had no answer.

Because he knew.

I looked at Lily standing beside Emma.

The little girl was watching all of us.

Confused.

Afraid.

And suddenly I hated every adult in that room.

Because the people with the most power had caused the most damage.

I walked toward Ethan.

Everyone went silent.

He looked at me.

“Claire.””

I stopped.

“I need to know one thing.””

His eyes met mine.

“Did you love me?””

His face changed instantly.

“Yes.””

“Did you love Charlotte?””

Another pause.

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

“Thank you.””

He looked confused.

“For what?””

“For finally telling the truth.””

I turned away.

The music stopped.

The wedding coordinator stood frozen near the entrance.

Nobody knew what to do.

Then Vivian spoke.

“You’re really going to throw away everything over this?””

I stopped walking.

Everything.

The word echoed.

Because that was how she saw people.

As things.

Assets.

Investments.

Possessions.

I turned back.

“No.””

Vivian raised an eyebrow.

“I’m not throwing anything away.””

I looked at Ethan.

“I’m refusing to marry someone I don’t know.””

His face fell.

Then I looked at Lily.

“And I’m refusing to punish a child because adults failed her.””

Charlotte covered her mouth.

Ethan looked devastated.

But before anyone could speak, a man’s voice came from the back of the hall.

“Claire Bennett?””

Everyone turned.

A stranger stood near the entrance.

Older.

Gray hair.

Holding a folder.

He looked directly at me.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.””

Vivian’s face went completely white.

Because she knew him.

“Richard.””

The man ignored her.

He walked forward.

“I have documents that prove Vivian Mercer has been lying to this family for years.””

The entire room froze.

Ethan stared.

“What documents?””

Richard looked at Vivian.

“The ones your mother hoped would never be found.””

He handed the folder to me.

May you like

And on the first page was a name I recognized.

My own.
