Chapter 4: The Choice He Never Told Me About
The room remained silent after Charlotte’s words.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that comes right before something breaks.
I looked at Ethan.
Then Vivian.
Then back at Charlotte.
My mind was trying to arrange pieces that refused to fit together.
“Vivian made him choose?””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
Charlotte nodded slowly.
“She gave him an ultimatum.””
Ethan’s face tightened.
“Charlotte, stop.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“But this time, you don’t get to protect everyone except yourself.””
The little girl beside her looked confused.
She squeezed Charlotte’s hand.
“Mommy?””
Charlotte immediately softened.
“Lily, why don’t you wait with Emma outside?””
Emma, who had been standing near the door frozen in shock, nodded quickly.
“Of course.””
The little girl looked at Ethan.
“Daddy?””
That one word hurt more than any accusation.
Because it reminded me that this wasn’t just a secret.
It was a person.
A child.
A little girl who had existed for five years while I built a life with a man who had never once mentioned her.
Ethan crouched down.
“Lily, I’ll talk to you soon, okay?””
She nodded.
Then she looked at me.
Her eyes were innocent.
“You’re pretty.””
I almost cried.
Because she didn’t know.
She didn’t know that her existence had just destroyed the future I thought I had.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
When the door closed behind them, Charlotte turned back.
“You deserve the whole story.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Not like this.””
Charlotte looked at him.
“When was it supposed to happen, Ethan?””
He didn’t answer.
“After the wedding?””
Silence.
“After Claire found out another way?””
His jaw tightened.
I looked at him.
“Is that true?””
“No.””
But the hesitation before the word was enough.
I stepped away.
“Tell me.””
Ethan looked exhausted.
“Five years ago, before I met you, my family was going through a difficult period.””
Vivian scoffed.
“Be careful with your words.””
Ethan ignored her.
“My father was sick. The company was unstable. Charlotte and I were engaged.””
Charlotte looked down.
“We were planning our wedding.””
I swallowed.
“And Lily?””
“She was born three months before we separated,” Charlotte said quietly.
I looked at Ethan.
“You left when she was a baby?””
“No.””
His answer came immediately.
“I didn’t leave her.””
“Then what happened?””
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Vivian walked toward the window.
“My son was making an emotional decision.””
Ethan’s eyes darkened.
“Mom.””
“No, Ethan.””
She turned.
“You were twenty-seven years old. You were ready to throw away everything because you wanted to play hero.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vivian looked at me.
“Charlotte’s family was destroying his future.””
Charlotte’s face changed.
“That’s not what happened.””
Vivian laughed.
“Of course you would say that.””
I looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Charlotte took a breath.
“My father invested in Mercer Industries.””
“And?”” I asked.
“When the company struggled, Vivian blamed my family.””
Ethan looked at the floor.
“She believed Charlotte’s father had made bad decisions.””
Vivian corrected him.
“He did.””
Charlotte’s eyes flashed.
“No. Your father made mistakes, and you needed someone else to blame.””
The tension in the room became unbearable.
I looked at Ethan.
“What choice did she force you to make?””
He didn’t answer.
Vivian did.
“I told him he needed to decide what kind of man he wanted to be.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“That doesn’t sound like a choice.””
She smiled.
“It was.””
She walked closer.
“Stay with Charlotte, and lose the company.””
I looked at Ethan.
“And if he left her?””
Vivian didn’t blink.
“He would take his place as heir.””
My stomach dropped.
“You made him choose money over his family.””
Vivian’s expression hardened.
“I made him choose responsibility.””
Charlotte laughed quietly.
A sad sound.
“Responsibility?””
She looked at Ethan.
“You told me you loved me.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I did.””
“Then you disappeared.””
“I was trying to fix things.””
“You stopped answering my calls.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
Charlotte shook her head.
“You were trying to convince yourself you were the victim.””
Ethan flinched.
I looked at him.
“Is that true?””
He was silent.
That silence hurt.
Because silence was becoming his favorite answer.
“I thought you left her because you didn’t love her.””
Ethan finally looked at me.
“I did love her.””
The words cut.
Not because I didn’t expect him to have loved someone before me.
Everyone had a past.
But because he had hidden it.
He had built our relationship on a foundation with missing pieces.
“I loved you too,” he said.
I laughed softly.
“You don’t get to say that like it fixes anything.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
I pointed toward the door where Lily had disappeared.
“You let me believe I was building a life with you while you had a daughter you never told me about.””
His face broke.
“I was ashamed.””
“Of her?””
“No.””
“Then of what?””
Ethan looked at Vivian.
And I understood.
He wasn’t ashamed of Lily.
He was ashamed that his mother had won.
The wedding music started downstairs.
A reminder.
Guests were waiting.
Hundreds of people expecting a bride to walk down the aisle.
But I wasn’t thinking about flowers anymore.
Or vows.
Or photographs.
I was thinking about a little girl who had asked me if I was the woman her father was marrying.
I walked toward the mirror.
My mother’s dress looked different now.
Not because the dress changed.
Because I did.
The door opened.
Vivian stepped inside alone.
“You should be grateful.””
I turned.
“Grateful?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me calmly.
“I gave you the truth before you made the biggest mistake of your life.””
I stared at her.
“You didn’t give me the truth.””
I picked up the photograph.
“You used it.””
Her expression remained cold.
“I exposed what Ethan was hiding.””
“No.””
I walked closer.
“You waited until I was wearing my mother’s dress.””
For the first time, her expression shifted.
“You wanted me destroyed.””
Vivian’s eyes narrowed.
“You have always misunderstood me.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I finally understand you.””
A small smile appeared.
“And what exactly do you understand?””
I looked at the door.
At the wedding waiting outside.
Then back at her.
“That you were never afraid I would hurt Ethan.””
I paused.
“You were afraid I would love him enough that he would choose me over you.””
The smile disappeared.
And for the first time, I saw fear.
Not much.
Just enough.
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Answered.
Listened.
And suddenly, her face changed.
“What do you mean the reporters are already here?””
My heart stopped.
Reporters?
She ended the call.
I stared at her.
“What did you do?””
Vivian looked at me.
And whispered:
“Nothing.””
But the way she said it told me everything.
May you like
She had planned something bigger.
Something that had nothing to do with just ruining my wedding.
