Amused

Chapter 3: The Contract Beneath The Vows

The paper looked harmless.

That was the cruelest part.

A single sheet.

A few paragraphs.

Black words printed neatly across white paper.

Nothing about it looked capable of destroying a life.

But I had learned something about the Mercers.

The most dangerous things about them never looked dangerous at first.

I picked it up.

Ethan immediately said my name.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“Did you sign this?””

He didn’t answer.

That was my answer.

My eyes moved down the page.

At first, I didn’t understand what I was reading.

Then one sentence caught my attention.

*In the event of marriage, all personal and family matters shall remain confidential to protect the Mercer reputation.*

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Let me explain.””

“No.””

My voice was quieter now.

Somehow that made it worse.

“Why is there an agreement about what I’m allowed to know?””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it?””

Ethan ran a hand through his hair.

A gesture I had seen a hundred times.

Except now I saw the panic behind it.

“It was my father’s idea.””

Vivian smiled faintly.

“Don’t blame the dead.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew about this?””

“Of course.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew Ethan agreed to hide things from me?””

Vivian looked almost offended.

“I knew Ethan was protecting his future.””

“By lying?””

“By surviving.””

I stared at her.

“You really believe that?””

“Yes.””

Her answer came instantly.

“That is why you will never understand this family.””

Ethan stepped toward his mother.

“Enough.””

Vivian looked at him.

“No. Not enough.””

Her voice sharpened.

“You brought this woman into our world. You promised her things you knew you couldn’t give her.””

My eyes moved between them.

“What does that mean?””

Neither answered.

That frightened me more.

I turned to Ethan.

“What can’t you give me?””

He looked broken.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Broken.

“Claire…”

“Tell me.””

He closed his eyes.

“I didn’t tell you everything about Charlotte because Lily is my daughter.””

The room stopped.

I heard nothing.

Not the traffic outside.

Not the music from downstairs.

Not my own breathing.

Just those words.

My daughter.

I looked at the photograph again.

The little girl.

The dark curls.

The smile.

“How old is she?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Five.””

Five.

The same amount of time we had been together.

My knees almost weakened.

“You have a five-year-old daughter.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“I was going to.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I placed the photograph down.

“Everyone was going to tell me.””

Ethan reached for my hand.

I moved away.

That hurt him.

I saw it.

And a small part of me hated that it hurt him.

Because I still loved him.

That was the most painful truth.

“You should have trusted me enough to tell me.””

“I was afraid.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were afraid of consequences.””

He looked down.

Because he knew I was right.

A knock interrupted us.

This time, no one moved.

Then the door opened.

A woman stood there.

She looked exhausted.

Her dark hair was pulled back.

Her eyes were red, like she had been crying.

And beside her stood a little girl holding her hand.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized the photograph.

The woman.

Charlotte.

And the child.

Lily.

Ethan whispered:

“Charlotte…”

Charlotte looked at him.

Then at me.

“I’m sorry.””

Nobody spoke.

The little girl stared up at me with innocent eyes.

Then she asked the question that shattered everything.

“Are you the woman Daddy is marrying?””

I couldn’t breathe.

Ethan looked horrified.

Vivian looked satisfied.

And Charlotte slowly reached into her purse.

She pulled out another envelope.

“I came because you deserve to know the truth.””

She looked at Ethan.

“The truth about why he left us.””

My fingers tightened.

“What truth?””

Charlotte’s eyes filled with tears.

Then she said:

“Because Ethan didn’t abandon me.””

She looked directly at Vivian.

May you like

“Vivian made him choose.””

And the entire wedding day changed.
