Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Lie

The room went completely silent.

Not the kind of silence that comes after an argument.

The kind that comes after someone says something impossible.

Something that changes the meaning of everything that happened before it.

Vanessa stood in the middle of my living room, tears running down her face.

“I didn’t do it for me.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

I looked at her.

“Then who did you do it for?””

She opened her mouth.

No words came.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Say it.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You don’t understand.””

Rachel’s voice was calm.

“You’re right.””

She held Mason’s hand.

“I don’t understand how someone can look at a child and decide their fear is useful.””

Vanessa flinched.

I looked at Daniel.

He was pale.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

And that told me something.

He knew.

“How long?”” I asked him.

He looked at me.

“What?””

“How long have you been lying?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Ethan…”

“How long?””

He looked down.

“Almost two years.””

My chest tightened.

Two years.

Two years of friendship.

Two years of trusting him.

Two years of letting him walk into my home.

“You knew about Rachel.””

“Yes.””

“You knew she was alive?””

“Yes.””

Mason stared at him.

“You knew my mom was alive?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The pain on Mason’s face was something I would never forget.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Just a child trying to understand how adults could make choices that destroyed lives.

“Why?”” Mason whispered.

Daniel looked at him.

“I was scared.””

Mason shook his head.

“You were scared?””

His voice cracked.

“I was the one who lost my mom.””

Daniel had no answer.

I stepped forward.

“What did you promise Vanessa?””

Daniel looked away.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa’s voice was barely audible.

Daniel looked at her.

Then at me.

“She wanted a way out.””

“From what?””

“Debt.””

I waited.

“And you offered what?””

He hesitated.

“Money.””

“Where did it come from?””

Silence.

Then Rachel spoke.

“Life insurance.””

The words landed heavily.

I felt my hands go cold.

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I never planned for anyone to die.””

Rachel laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“That’s the lie you tell yourself.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“You made choices.””

The room became still.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know?””

She wiped her face.

“At first?””

Her voice shook.

“No.””

I stared.

“At first?””

She nodded.

“I thought Daniel wanted to scare you.””

“And later?””

She looked down.

“I realized he wanted more.””

My stomach twisted.

“How much did you know?””

She didn’t answer.

“How much?””

“Enough.””

The word was barely a whisper.

Enough.

Enough to stop it.

Enough to tell me.

Enough to protect Lily.

But she didn’t.

I turned away.

Because looking at her hurt more than I expected.

“You let this happen.””

“I was trapped.””

“No.””

I looked back.

“You were afraid.””

She nodded.

“But you still chose.””

Her tears fell faster.

“I know.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“You know what hurts the most?””

Vanessa looked at her.

Rachel’s voice broke.

“I trusted you with my son.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I loved him.””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“You loved what he represented.””

Mason looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel knelt beside him.

“It means sometimes adults confuse needing someone with loving them.””

Mason looked down.

“I thought she loved me.””

Vanessa broke.

“Mason…”

He stepped back.

That one movement destroyed her.

Because for the first time, she looked like she understood what she had lost.

Not money.

Not a house.

Not a marriage.

A child’s trust.

The same trust Lily had lost.

My phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice came through.

“Ethan.””

My entire body went tense.

I knew that voice.

Daniel’s old business partner.

The man who had sent the original messages.

The man who had been watching.

“Who is this?””

“You already know.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face changed.

“Where is Daniel?””

I didn’t answer.

The man continued.

“You need to listen carefully.””

I walked away from the others.

“Why?””

“Because you’re running out of time.””

My jaw tightened.

“What does that mean?””

A pause.

Then:

“Daniel wasn’t the one in control.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“He thinks he was.””

The voice became quieter.

“But he was only a piece.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

The call crackled.

Then the man said:

“The person who started this was closer than you think.””

The line went dead.

I lowered the phone.

Everyone was watching me.

“What happened?”” Rachel asked.

I looked at Daniel.

“You have someone above you.””

His face changed.

“No.””

“You sure?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did someone just tell me you were only a piece?””

Daniel went silent.

And that silence was different.

This wasn’t guilt.

This was confusion.

Fear.

“I don’t know.””

I believed him.

For the first time.

And that scared me.

Because if Daniel wasn’t the person controlling everything…

Who was?

The next morning, I sat at the kitchen table.

The same table where Lily had sat on the floor.

The same table where she had held a piece of bread like it was something she needed to apologize for.

Except now, everything was different.

The house felt empty.

Vanessa was upstairs.

Rachel was with Mason.

And Lily was with my sister until I could figure out what happened next.

I opened the documents Rachel gave me.

There were medical records.

Messages.

Bank transfers.

Then I found something.

A payment.

Three days before Rachel’s medication was changed.

The recipient name was hidden.

But the account number was familiar.

I searched through my old records.

Then froze.

The account belonged to a company.

A company connected to someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

A photo.

No words.

Just an image.

I opened it.

It was a picture taken inside my house.

Yesterday.

While we were all downstairs.

The angle was from Lily’s bedroom.

My blood ran cold.

Someone had been inside.

Someone had access.

Then another message appeared.

*“You’re looking in the wrong direction, Ethan.””*

A second message followed.

*“Ask yourself who benefits when everyone blames Vanessa.””*

I stared at the screen.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Someone wanted me to find Vanessa.

Someone wanted me to find Daniel.

Someone wanted me to believe the story was over.

But it wasn’t.

I looked at the payment record again.

The company name.

The one I recognized.

The one that made my hands shake.

Because it wasn’t Daniel’s.

It wasn’t Vanessa’s.

It was mine.

The company I had built.

The company I trusted my closest employees to run.

And beneath the transaction was a signature.

A signature I knew better than my own.

My business partner.

My friend.

The person who had been helping me rebuild my life after Lily was born.

The person who had comforted me when Rachel died.

I whispered his name.

“No…”

The front door opened.

I looked up.

Daniel walked in holding a folder.

His face was pale.

“I found something.””

I stood.

“What?””

He placed the folder on the table.

“I found out who was really paying me.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then said:

“Your brother.””

I froze.

Because I didn’t have a brother.

Not anymore.

My brother had died when I was twenty-three.

At least…

That was what I had been told.

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A man standing beside Vanessa.

A man standing beside Daniel.

A man standing beside my father years ago.

And under the photo was a name.

A name that made my entire world collapse.

*Evan Carter.*

May you like

My dead brother.

Alive.
