Amused

Chapter 5: The Man I Trusted

The name stared back at me from the screen.

*Daniel Cross.*

For several seconds, I convinced myself I was wrong.

It had to be someone else.

A similar face.

A coincidence.

Anything.

Because the alternative was impossible.

Daniel wasn’t just someone I knew.

He was my best friend.

The person who stood beside me at my wedding.

The person who helped me move into this house.

The person who held Lily when she was born because he said he wanted to be the first “uncle” she ever had.

My thumb hovered over the photo.

The image showed Vanessa standing beside him outside a coffee shop three miles from our house.

They weren’t talking casually.

They weren’t two old friends who happened to meet.

They were close.

Too close.

Daniel’s hand rested on Vanessa’s shoulder.

Vanessa was smiling.

A smile I hadn’t seen in months.

A smile she used to give me.

I felt Mason watching me.

“Dad?””

I locked my phone.

“Who is he?””

Mason looked confused.

“You know him?””

I looked at the screen again.

“Yes.””

My voice sounded strange.

“He’s my friend.””

Mason’s face changed.

“He comes here when you’re gone.””

The words hit me harder than anything else.

“When?””

“I don’t know.””

“How many times?””

Mason looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“Try.””

He swallowed.

“Sometimes after school.””

My stomach twisted.

“After school?””

He nodded.

“Mom tells Lily to stay upstairs.””

I stared at him.

“And you?””

“She tells me to go to my room.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She hadn’t moved.

She was watching me carefully.

“You let him come into our house?””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Act like you’re shocked.””

“I am shocked.””

“Why?””

Her voice became sharp.

“Because Daniel and I talked?””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Because you brought him here while I was gone.””

“He’s a friend.””

“Mine.””

She laughed quietly.

“Is that what bothers you?””

I felt something cold settle inside me.

“You know what bothers me?””

I pointed upstairs.

“My daughter was afraid to tell me what was happening.””

Then I pointed at Mason.

“This kid was protecting her from you.””

Finally, I held up my phone.

“And now I find out my wife has been meeting my best friend behind my back.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re making assumptions.””

“Then explain.””

Silence.

That was the problem.

Vanessa always had an answer.

Until now.

I looked at Mason.

“Go upstairs.””

His eyes widened.

“Dad?””

“It’s okay.””

“But—”

“I need to talk to Vanessa.””

He hesitated.

Then he nodded.

Before leaving, he whispered:

“Don’t let her delete anything.””

I watched him disappear.

Then I turned back.

“Where is Daniel?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Where is he?””

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

“Then why is he in our security footage?””

Her face tightened.

“Because he was helping.””

“With what?””

She looked away.

That was the first time she looked guilty.

Not scared.

Not angry.

Guilty.

“With what?”” I repeated.

Vanessa walked toward the desk and closed the laptop.

I stepped forward.

“No.””

She stopped.

“You’re not touching that.””

Her eyes met mine.

“Are you threatening me?””

“No.””

I looked at the computer.

“I’m protecting my daughter.””

Something changed in her face.

“You really think I’m the enemy.””

I stared at her.

“I think I don’t know you.””

The words hurt her.

I saw it.

For a moment, Vanessa wasn’t the woman who had been cold all night.

She was the woman I married.

The woman who used to laugh with me while cooking dinner.

The woman who cried when Lily took her first steps.

Then that moment disappeared.

“You want the truth?””

I said nothing.

“Fine.””

She sat down on the basement steps.

“I was overwhelmed.””

I stayed standing.

“With what?””

“Everything.””

She rubbed her forehead.

“When Mason came to live with us, things changed.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Things changed for everyone.””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“They changed for me.””

I waited.

“I became the mother of two children overnight.””

“You chose that.””

“Yes.””

She looked up.

“And I loved them.””

Past tense.

I noticed.

“But?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“But Lily was different.””

I felt anger rising.

“Different how?””

“She was attached to you.””

I stared.

“What?””

“She needed you constantly.””

“She’s my daughter.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“And Mason needed me.””

There was something almost painful in the way she said it.

But it didn’t excuse anything.

“You punished Lily because she loved me?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Vanessa stood.

“Because I was trying to create balance.””

“By taking things away from her?””

“By teaching her.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were controlling her.””

She looked at me.

“You think I’m a monster.””

“I think you hurt a child.””

That landed.

She looked away.

Then she whispered:

“I never meant for it to go this far.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was supposed to leave.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“I was supposed to take Mason and leave.””

“Leave where?””

“I don’t know.””

“When?””

“Soon.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Because Daniel had a plan.””

My chest tightened.

“What plan?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

“He said you had insurance.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“What?””

“He said if something happened to you…”

She stopped.

I took a step back.

“Something happened?””

“He was talking about money.””

“Money from what?””

She looked terrified now.

“The life insurance.””

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

The basement seemed to spin.

“You’re telling me Daniel was planning to kill me?””

“I didn’t know.””

“Don’t.””

I raised my hand.

“Don’t say you didn’t know.””

“I didn’t!””

“Then why did you say you were supposed to leave?””

“Because I got scared.””

“When?””

“When he started asking questions.””

“What questions?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“The kind of questions you don’t ask unless you’re thinking about doing something terrible.””

I stared at her.

For the first time that night, I saw a different possibility.

Maybe Vanessa was guilty.

Maybe she had hurt Lily.

Maybe she had manipulated both children.

But maybe Daniel was something else.

Something worse.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She laughed bitterly.

“Would you have believed me?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

The woman standing in front of me had lied so much that even her confession felt impossible to trust.

My phone buzzed again.

I looked down.

Another message.

This time, a video.

The sender wrote:

*“You deserve to see what Daniel was really doing in your house.””*

I pressed play.

The video showed our living room.

The date was two weeks earlier.

Daniel sat on my couch.

Vanessa sat beside him.

They were talking.

But I couldn’t hear the beginning.

Then Daniel said something that made my entire body go cold.

“Once Ethan is gone, everything becomes easier.””

Vanessa looked nervous.

“Don’t say things like that.””

Daniel smiled.

“You wanted this.””

“No.””

“You wanted the house.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I wanted a fresh start.””

Daniel leaned closer.

“You wanted what he had.””

The video continued.

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

Then Daniel said:

“What about the girl?””

My heart stopped.

The girl.

Lily.

Vanessa whispered:

“She’s just a child.””

Daniel smiled.

“That’s why she’s useful.””

The video ended.

I couldn’t breathe.

Not because of Vanessa.

Not even because of Daniel.

Because I finally understood something.

The person who had been hurting my daughter wasn’t just trying to control her.

She had been preparing her.

For something.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What did he want from Lily?””

She started crying.

“I don’t know.””

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

“I don’t know.””

“Vanessa.””

She covered her face.

Then whispered:

“He wanted her to say something.””

“What?””

Her voice barely came out.

“He wanted Lily to accuse you of something.””

The room went completely silent.

I felt a chill run through me.

“Accuse me of what?””

Vanessa looked up.

And the fear in her eyes was real.

“He wanted her to say you hurt her.””

My heart stopped.

Because suddenly, the plan became clear.

Daniel wasn’t just trying to take my house.

He wasn’t just trying to take my money.

He was trying to destroy me.

And my daughter was supposed to be the weapon.

Then, from upstairs, we heard a sound.

A door opening.

“Mason?””

No answer.

I ran up the stairs.

His bedroom door was open.

The room was empty.

On his bed was a piece of paper.

A handwritten note.

My hands shook as I picked it up.

Five words.

May you like

Five words that made my blood run cold.

*“I’m sorry, Dad. She found out.””*
