Chapter 8: The Woman Who Came Back
The file sat on my laptop screen.
*WHAT HAPPENED TO MASON’S MOTHER.*
I stared at the words for what felt like an eternity.
A year ago, everyone told me the same thing.
Mason’s mother, Rachel, had gotten sick.
Her condition had worsened quickly.
There had been nothing anyone could do.
A tragic story.
A simple story.
A story with no villain.
But now, after everything I had seen, I knew one thing.
Simple stories were often the ones people created to hide complicated truths.
“Open it.””
Vanessa’s voice came from behind me.
I turned.
She stood in the doorway.
For once, she didn’t look angry.
She didn’t look defensive.
She looked terrified.
“You don’t want me to open this,” I said.
She swallowed.
“No.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Why?””
She looked at the screen.
“Because then you’ll know everything.””
I leaned back.
“Isn’t that what you wanted?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I wanted to fix things before they got this far.””
I almost laughed.
“Fix?””
I pointed toward the laptop.
“My daughter was starving.””
“I know.””
“My son was afraid.””
“I know.””
“You lied to me.””
“I know.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
For a moment, I saw regret.
Real regret.
But regret didn’t erase damage.
It didn’t erase fear.
It didn’t erase the nights Lily spent wondering if she deserved dinner.
I looked at the file again.
Then I clicked.
The video loaded.
The first image was a hospital room.
Rachel was lying in bed.
She looked weaker than she had in Daniel’s recording.
But she was awake.
The timestamp was two days before she died.
My breathing slowed.
Rachel looked into the camera.
“Ethan…”
I froze.
She knew she was being recorded.
She knew this might be seen.
“If you’re watching this, then something happened.””
Her voice shook.
“I don’t know if I’ll be alive when you see it.””
Mason walked into the room.
“Dad?””
I looked up.
He was standing behind me.
His face changed when he saw the screen.
“That’s Mom.””
I nodded.
“Come here.””
He hesitated.
Then walked closer.
Rachel continued.
“I need you to understand something.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“Vanessa is not the person she says she is.””
Mason went still.
I glanced at him.
The words hurt him.
Even though he already suspected something.
“Rachel,” I whispered.
The video continued.
“I found out about Vanessa’s financial problems.””
She took a breath.
“She was desperate.””
A pause.
“And desperate people can make dangerous choices.””
The camera shifted slightly.
Someone was holding it.
Daniel.
I knew it.
Rachel looked off-screen.
“Did you tell him?””
Daniel’s voice answered.
“Not yet.””
My stomach tightened.
Rachel looked back.
“You need to tell him.””
Daniel said nothing.
“Promise me.””
A long silence.
Then:
“I promise.””
The video paused.
I looked at Daniel.
He was standing in the corner of the room.
Quiet.
I hadn’t even noticed he had followed us inside.
“You recorded this?”” I asked.
He nodded.
“Rachel asked me to.””
“Why?””
His face was pale.
“Because she knew she was running out of time.””
I looked back at the screen.
The video resumed.
Rachel continued.
“Ethan, if you’re watching this, I need you to protect Mason.””
My heart tightened.
“I know he’s not your biological son.””
Mason looked down.
“But I also know that doesn’t matter to you.””
My throat tightened.
Because she was right.
“He loves you.””
Mason wiped his eyes.
“And he needs someone who won’t abandon him.””
The video changed.
A new scene.
Rachel and Vanessa.
Together.
My entire body went tense.
The hospital room was different.
The angle was different.
This was not a message.
This was security footage.
Vanessa sat beside Rachel’s bed.
Rachel looked exhausted.
“Why are you doing this?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
“You do.””
Rachel coughed.
“You’re watching Ethan.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“What?””
“You think I don’t know?””
Silence.
Rachel continued.
“You’re collecting information.””
Vanessa looked angry.
“You don’t know anything.””
“I know you opened a bank account in Mason’s name.””
My heart stopped.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“That’s impossible.””
“I saw the documents.””
The room became silent.
Rachel looked at her.
“You’re planning something.””
Vanessa stood.
“You’re sick.””
“No.””
Rachel’s voice was stronger.
“I’m dying.””
A pause.
“And I’m still not blind.””
Vanessa stared at her.
“What do you want?””
Rachel answered:
“I want my son safe.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Mason looked at Vanessa.
Not with anger.
With heartbreak.
“Did you?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Mason.””
His voice shook.
“Did you use my name?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
He stepped back.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
That sentence hurt her.
I saw it.
But I didn’t comfort her.
Not this time.
I looked at Daniel.
“Tell me the rest.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“After Rachel died, I found the documents.””
“What documents?””
“The bank accounts. The debt. The messages.””
“Between you and Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
My jaw tightened.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because I was involved.””
The room went quiet.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at the floor.
“I helped her at first.””
Mason stared.
“You did?””
Daniel nodded.
“I thought she just needed money.””
“And then?””
“She started talking about Ethan.””
I looked at him.
“What about me?””
“She said you had everything.””
“That’s it?””
“No.””
He hesitated.
“She said you didn’t understand what it felt like to have nothing.””
I almost laughed.
“You had choices.””
“I know.””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“I know now.””
The guilt in his voice was real.
But so was the damage.
“What made you stop?””
He looked at Mason.
“You.””
Mason frowned.
“Me?””
Daniel nodded.
“When I saw what Vanessa was doing to Lily…”
He swallowed.
“I realized she wasn’t desperate anymore.””
He looked at me.
“She was becoming cruel.””
Vanessa sat down.
Her face was buried in her hands.
“I never wanted to hurt them.””
I looked at her.
“But you did.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
The room stayed quiet.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Tired.
Holding a small bag.
Mason stopped breathing.
“Mom?””
Nobody moved.
The woman looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Mason.””
The bag dropped from her hand.
Mason ran.
Not walked.
Ran.
She caught him.
Held him.
And cried into his shoulder.
I couldn’t move.
Because I knew that face.
Rachel.
Alive.
Standing in my living room.
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
Rachel looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
Vanessa took a step back.
“You’re dead.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
The room became silent.
“I was supposed to be.””
My heart pounded.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Vanessa didn’t just lie about money.””
She took a breath.
“She lied about my illness.””
Mason held tighter to her.
“Mom?””
Rachel looked down at him.
“I’m sorry you had to find out like this.””
Then she looked at me.
“Ethan, there is something you need to know.””
“What?””
Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“The night I almost died…”
Vanessa looked away.
Rachel continued.
“She was there.””
The air disappeared from the room.
“What?””
Rachel’s voice shook.
“She changed my medication.””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“That’s a lie.””
Rachel looked at her.
“You know it’s not.””
“No.””
Vanessa backed away.
“You’re lying because you want revenge.””
Rachel’s expression broke.
“I spent a year recovering.””
A pause.
“I spent a year wondering if my son would ever know me again.””
She looked at Mason.
“And I came back because I found proof.””
My hands went cold.
“What proof?””
Rachel reached into her bag.
She pulled out a folder.
Then she placed it on the table.
Inside was a printed document.
One name.
One signature.
One date.
I picked it up.
And my entire body froze.
Because the signature at the bottom belonged to Vanessa.
The document was not a bank record.
Not a custody agreement.
Not a financial statement.
It was a hospital form.
And the title at the top read:
*PATIENT MEDICATION CHANGE AUTHORIZATION.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying.
Not denying.
Not fighting.
Just crying.
And that was when I realized something.
The dinner roll.
The cameras.
The lies.
They were never the whole story.
They were only the beginning.
Rachel reached for Mason’s hand.
Then she said quietly:
“Ethan, you need to see what happened after she signed that paper.””
I looked at her.
“What happened?””
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“Someone tried to make sure I never woke up.””
And behind her, Vanessa whispered:
“I didn’t do it for me.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa looked at me.
“I did it because Daniel promised…”
She stopped.
My heart sank.
“Promised what?””
Her face went pale.
May you like
Then she said:
“He promised he could make you disappear.””
