Amused

Chapter 9: The Room Behind the Wall

We drove to the house in silence.

Police lights flashed across the windows as we approached.

The front door was open.

A uniformed officer met us on the porch.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“I'm Detective Lewis.””

“What happened?””

“Entry appears to have been forced through the rear door.””

“Anything stolen?””

He looked at his notes.

“Mostly nothing.””

“Mostly?””

“The safe in the office was opened.””

I froze.

“What safe?””

Detective Lewis looked confused.

“The small one in the study.””

I looked at Michael.

“That safe wasn't there yesterday.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

Detective Lewis frowned.

“Yesterday?””

“Yes.””

He stepped aside.

“You should see this.””

We entered.

The house looked almost untouched.

That was what made it frightening.

The furniture was exactly where I remembered it.

The crystal vase on the entry table.

The framed wedding photograph.

The chair where Benjamin used to leave his jacket.

Nothing had been overturned.

Nothing had been smashed.

Whoever had entered hadn't been searching.

They had known where to go.

Detective Lewis led us to the study.

The old wall panel was open.

Behind it was a narrow dark space.

I stared.

“This was here the whole time?””

Michael nodded.

“We suspected it.””

Detective Lewis shone his flashlight inside.

There was a small steel door.

The lock had been cut.

Inside, empty shelves lined the walls.

Except for one thing.

A single envelope.

Detective Lewis removed it carefully.

It had my name on it.

Again.

*Emma.*

My hands shook.

“Is it safe?””

He nodded.

“It appears untouched.””

Michael opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My father-in-law stood in front of a building.

Beside him was a much younger version of me.

I stared.

“I've never seen this.””

Michael turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

*The first day she saved my company.*

I looked at the photograph again.

Then something clicked.

The building behind us.

I knew it.

It was the tiny office where Benjamin and I had spent our first year building what would eventually become Carter Holdings.

But there was something wrong.

Benjamin wasn't in the photograph.

My father-in-law was standing beside me.

I looked at Michael.

“Why would his father be there?””

Michael studied the image.

“Maybe because he was the one who hired you.””

My breath caught.

I remembered my first interview.

I had thought Benjamin had arranged it.

He told me his father wanted to meet me.

I assumed it was because he was protective of his son.

But maybe that wasn't the reason.

I turned the photograph over again.

Beneath the first sentence was another.

*Ask Emma what she remembers about the blue folder.*

I closed my eyes.

The blue folder.

Suddenly, I remembered.

Years ago, Benjamin had given me a blue folder and asked me to review a marketing proposal.

I had spent three nights rewriting it.

That proposal became the foundation of the company.

I had completely forgotten that the original documents were mine.

Michael looked at me.

“Emma?””

“I know where the originals are.””

“Where?””

“At home.””

Detective Lewis shook his head.

“We searched the house.””

“Not the house.””

I walked toward the kitchen.

There was a cabinet above the refrigerator.

I opened it.

An old cardboard box sat behind several serving dishes.

I pulled it down.

Dust covered the lid.

Inside were things I hadn't touched in years.

Old photographs.

A wedding invitation.

Receipts.

A blue folder.

I lifted it.

My hands trembled.

Michael opened it.

Inside was the original marketing framework.

Every page had my handwriting.

At the bottom of the final page was a note.

Not from me.

From Benjamin's father.

*This is the foundation. Never let Benjamin convince her otherwise.*

I sat down.

The room seemed to spin.

“He knew.””

Michael nodded.

“He knew everything.””

Detective Lewis looked at the folder.

“Mrs. Carter, this could be important evidence.””

“It is.””

My phone rang.

Benjamin.

I stared at the screen.

Michael shook his head.

“Don't answer.””

I answered.

“Where is the key?””

His voice was quiet.

I froze.

“What key?””

“The brass key.””

“How did you get my number?””

He laughed softly.

“Emma.””

“Where are you?””

“You shouldn't have gone looking for the room.””

“Did you take the box?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you don't understand what your father-in-law left behind.””

“He left me the company.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“He left you a choice.””

“What choice?””

“To destroy me or save me.””

I gripped the phone.

“You don't get to ask me to save you.””

“I know.””

“Then what do you want?””

“I want you to listen.””

“I've listened to you for eight years.””

“And you believed me.””

That silence hurt.

Benjamin continued.

“You think my father was a hero.””

“Wasn't he?””

“No.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“My father stole the company too.””

I looked at Michael.

Benjamin said, “Everything you found today is true. The transfers. The forged documents.

The hidden accounts. All of it.””

“Then why deny it?””

“Because there's another layer.””

“What layer?””

He breathed out slowly.

“The company was never mine.””

I said nothing.

“Not originally.””

“Whose was it?””

He hesitated.

Then:

“Yours.””

I closed my eyes.

“I know.””

“No, Emma.””

His voice cracked.

“You don't.””

He paused.

“Your father was the original founder.””

My eyes opened.

“What?””

“Your father created the business model my father stole.””

I couldn't speak.

“My father took it from him.””

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It does if you look at the original records.””

“Where are they?””

“With me.””

“You stole them?””

“I protected them.””

“You broke into my house.””

“I needed the key.””

“Why?””

“Because the key opens the final safe.””

“What final safe?””

“The one inside the office.””

I felt cold.

“What is in it?””

Benjamin's voice dropped.

“Your father's original agreement.””

My knees weakened.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“He died before I met you.””

“I know.””

“Then how could he have an agreement with your father?””

“Because they were partners.””

I stared at Michael.

He looked as stunned as I felt.

Benjamin continued.

“My father didn't build the company.””

“Then who did?””

“You.””

I swallowed.

“What?””

“Your father left you his half.””

“Then how did your family get it?””

“Through a contract.””

“What contract?””

Benjamin didn't answer.

“Benjamin?””

He finally said:

“The contract you signed the week before our wedding.””

I froze.

The same week he had asked me to sign “just paperwork.””

The same week I had believed I was helping him.

The same week my entire life had apparently been transferred away from me.

“What did I sign?””

“A partnership agreement.””

“I don't remember.””

“You weren't supposed to.””

Michael suddenly reached for the phone.

“Put it on speaker.””

I did.

Benjamin heard him.

“Michael.””

“Where are the originals?””

“Safe.””

“Where?””

Benjamin laughed bitterly.

“You've been looking in the wrong place.””

Michael's expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

“The final safe isn't at the warehouse.””

“Where is it?””

Benjamin answered:

“Under the courthouse.””

Silence.

Judge Hawkins' courthouse.

The building we had been sitting inside all day.

The place where his family had called me worthless.

The place where he had tried to convince a judge I had contributed nothing.

My heart pounded.

“Why would my father's documents be under the courthouse?””

Benjamin's voice became almost a whisper.

“Because that's where my father hid them after he realized Dorothy was going to kill him.””

I stopped breathing.

“What did you just say?””

Benjamin said nothing.

Then the call ended.

I looked at Michael.

He was already reaching for his phone.

Detective Lewis stepped closer.

“What did he say?””

I looked toward the dark hallway leading back into the house.

“He said my father-in-law didn't die naturally.””

Michael stared at me.

“And he says the evidence is under the courthouse.””

Outside, the police lights continued flashing.

Then Detective Lewis's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Detective Lewis?””

He listened.

Then looked directly at me.

“Mrs. Carter, you need to come with us.””

“Why?””

He lowered the phone.

“They just found a body.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

May you like

He looked toward the courthouse.

“In the basement.””
