Amused

Chapter 6: The Deal Behind the Marriage

Benjamin looked at Veronica.

She was crying.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just enough tears to make everyone wonder whether she was frightened or guilty.

“Tell them she's lying,” Benjamin said.

Veronica didn't answer.

“Veronica.””

She looked at him.

“I can't.””

His face hardened.

“You can.””

“I can't keep doing this.””

Richard grabbed her arm.

“Ms. Hale, don't say anything without counsel.””

She pulled away.

“I've had counsel for years.””

The judge looked at her.

“Ms. Hale, are you represented?””

“No.””

Richard stared at her.

“You were advised to retain counsel.””

“I don't want one.””

Benjamin stepped toward her.

“Stop.””

She shook her head.

“You stop.””

The courtroom seemed to hold its breath.

Veronica wiped her cheek.

“I didn't know it would become this.””

Benjamin laughed bitterly.

“You knew exactly what you were doing.””

“I knew what you told me.””

“You agreed.””

“I agreed to investigate your father.””

Margaret spoke from the witness stand.

“Not anymore.””

Veronica looked at her.

“I tried to leave.””

Margaret's face softened.

“Then tell the truth.””

Benjamin's voice rose.

“Don't.””

Judge Hawkins struck the gavel.

“Mr. Carter, enough.””

He sank into his chair.

I watched Veronica.

For months, I had imagined confronting her.

I had imagined screaming.

Demanding answers.

Asking why she had taken my husband.

But now, sitting across from her, I realized I didn't want any of that.

I wanted facts.

“Why?”” I asked.

Veronica looked at me.

“Because Benjamin found out I was working for his father.””

“What did his father ask you to investigate?””

“The company.””

“What specifically?””

“Money.””

My stomach tightened.

“How much?””

“Millions.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Were you aware of transfers to Dorothy Carter?””

“Yes.””

“Were you aware of Emma's ownership interest?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know her signature had been forged?””

Veronica closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The word landed like a stone.

I felt no surprise.

Only exhaustion.

I asked, “When did you know?””

“Before your wedding.””

I stared at her.

“You knew before I married him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

She looked down.

“Because Benjamin threatened me.””

“With what?””

“My brother.””

I frowned.

“What about your brother?””

“He had debts.””

Michael asked, “What kind of debts?””

“Business debts. Benjamin bought them.””

“So he controlled your brother's finances.””

“Yes.””

“And used that control against you.””

Veronica nodded.

I looked at Benjamin.

“You built the whole thing.””

He said nothing.

“You made everyone dependent on you.””

Still nothing.

“You made me dependent.””

His eyes met mine.

“You wanted to be.””

The cruelty of the answer was almost comforting.

Because it reminded me exactly who he was.

I turned away.

Michael asked Veronica, “Why did you stay?””

She swallowed.

“Because every time I tried to leave, Benjamin reminded me what would happen.””

“Did he threaten you physically?””

“No.””

“Financially?””

“Yes.””

“Legally?””

“Yes.””

“Did he have information that could damage you?””

Veronica hesitated.

“Yes.””

“What information?””

She looked at me.

“The affair.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Veronica took a breath.

“The affair wasn't supposed to happen.””

Benjamin's expression changed.

She continued.

“He wanted everyone to believe you were abandoned because he found someone else.””

I stared at her.

“What was the real reason?””

Veronica's voice became quiet.

“You had discovered the company records.””

I shook my head.

“I hadn't discovered them until after.””

“No.””

She looked at Benjamin.

“He knew you were asking questions.””

Benjamin stood.

“That's enough.””

Judge Hawkins looked at him.

“Sit.””

He sat.

Veronica continued.

“He told me you had become suspicious.””

“When?””

“Months before he filed for divorce.””

My hands curled into fists.

“So the affair was part of the plan?””

She nodded.

“He needed a reason to make you look unstable.””

Michael asked, “Why?””

“Because if Emma challenged the divorce financially, Benjamin wanted the judge to believe she was an unemployed spouse with no contribution to the company.””

Richard stood.

“Your Honor, this witness is speculating.””

Judge Hawkins looked at Veronica.

“Are you?””

“No.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I helped prepare the narrative.””

Benjamin closed his eyes.

Dorothy whispered, “Veronica.””

Veronica ignored her.

“I wrote some of the reports.””

My head turned.

“What reports?””

“The ones describing Emma as financially dependent.””

The courtroom fell silent.

I looked at Michael.

He didn't look surprised.

He had already suspected.

But then Veronica said something that made him freeze.

“Benjamin didn't write them.””

“Who did?””

Veronica looked toward Dorothy.

“His mother.””

Dorothy's face hardened.

“That's ridiculous.””

Veronica shook her head.

“You told me exactly what to put in them.””

Judge Hawkins looked at Dorothy.

“Mrs. Carter, you will have an opportunity to respond.””

Veronica looked at me.

“I'm sorry.””

I believed she meant it.

But sorry couldn't return eight years.

It couldn't restore trust.

It couldn't erase the photographs.

It couldn't make me the woman I had been before.

I asked one final question.

“Did Benjamin ever love me?””

Veronica's eyes filled again.

She looked at him.

Then at me.

“I don't know.””

That answer hurt more than a lie.

Michael closed his folder.

“Your Honor, we would like to request a temporary injunction preventing Mr. Carter from transferring or disposing of any marital or corporate assets pending full forensic review.””

Richard objected.

“We strongly oppose.””

Judge Hawkins nodded.

“Given the evidence presented today, I am granting the request.””

Benjamin looked stunned.

“You can't freeze my company.””

“I can,” Judge Hawkins said.

“And I am.””

His hands trembled.

Dorothy leaned toward him.

“Benjamin, we need to leave.””

He shook her off.

“This is your fault.””

Her eyes widened.

“My fault?””

“You said everything was protected.””

“I did what you asked.””

“I asked you to keep her quiet.””

“I tried.””

I stared at them.

There it was.

No polished language.

No carefully prepared statements.

No courtroom smiles.

Just two people blaming each other because their story was collapsing.

Judge Hawkins looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, I understand you have additional evidence?””

I glanced at Michael.

He nodded.

I took the handwritten letter from my folder.

“Yes, Your Honor.””

I walked toward the witness stand.

Benjamin watched me.

His expression had changed completely.

He looked like the man I remembered from our first year of marriage.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just afraid.

I handed the letter to the clerk.

Judge Hawkins read it.

She reached the final paragraph.

Her face changed.

“Mrs. Carter,” she said quietly, “where did you obtain this?””

“From my attorney.””

“Was this written by your father-in-law?””

“Yes.””

Judge Hawkins read the final lines again.

Then she looked at Benjamin.

“Mr. Carter, your father's letter indicates he intended to transfer controlling ownership of Carter Holdings to your wife.””

Benjamin shook his head.

“He was sick.””

“That does not answer my question.””

“He wasn't in his right mind.””

Margaret stood.

“He was.””

Judge Hawkins looked at her.

“Do you have proof?””

Margaret nodded.

“I do.””

She reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small audio recorder.

“I recorded the conversation.””

Benjamin stared at the device.

His face went completely white.

Margaret placed it on the witness stand.

“The recording was made two days before my brother died.””

Judge Hawkins looked at the recorder.

Then at Benjamin.

“What exactly does this recording contain?””

Margaret answered.

“My brother telling Benjamin what would happen if he tried to steal Emma's company.””

Benjamin's voice cracked.

“No.””

Margaret pressed the button.

Static filled the courtroom.

Then an older man's voice emerged.

Weak.

Breathing heavily.

But unmistakably clear.

*“If you hurt Emma, Benjamin, she gets everything.””*

Benjamin closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

And then his father's voice said the one thing that made everyone in the courtroom turn toward Veronica.

*“And if you think I don't know about the girl helping you, you're wrong.””*

The audio stopped.

Nobody moved.

Then the courtroom doors opened.

A man in a dark suit entered carrying a sealed evidence box.

He walked directly toward Michael.

“Mr. Peterson?””

“Yes?””

“I was instructed to deliver this to Emma Carter.””

Michael looked at the box.

There was a handwritten label across the top.

My name.

And beneath it, a date.

The date my father-in-law died.

Michael looked at me.

“Emma…”

I stared at the box.

“What is it?””

May you like

He swallowed.

“I think this is what your father-in-law was waiting for you to find.””
