Amused

Chapter 8: The Last Lie

“Michael?””

He stared at the box.

I had never seen him look so uncomfortable.

“What is Benjamin talking about?””

Michael took a slow breath.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“After we confirmed the location.””

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Two weeks.””

The words felt like another betrayal.

I stepped away from him.

“You knew there was another office?””

“We found a reference to it in the corporate records.””

“And you didn't tell me?””

“Because we didn't know whether it still existed.””

Benjamin laughed.

“That's not why.””

Judge Hawkins looked at him.

“Mr. Carter.””

Benjamin shrugged.

“My lawyer has always been very good at keeping secrets.””

Richard looked furious.

“Benjamin, stop speaking.””

Benjamin ignored him.

He looked at me.

“Your father-in-law's office wasn't destroyed.””

“Where is it?””

“You've been there.””

I frowned.

“When?””

“During our first year of marriage.””

I searched my memory.

Nothing.

Benjamin leaned forward.

“The house.””

My heart stopped.

“Our house?””

“The old study.””

I shook my head.

“That's impossible.””

“You never wondered why my father insisted on renovating that room before we moved in?””

I remembered.

A strange renovation.

A locked wall.

Workers coming and going for three weeks.

Benjamin had told me it was an electrical problem.

“You said it was storage.””

“I lied.””

I looked at Michael.

“Is he telling the truth?””

Michael nodded slowly.

“We found architectural records showing a concealed room.””

I stared at him.

“You knew that too?””

“Yes.””

My voice cracked.

“How many things did everyone know except me?””

No one answered.

Judge Hawkins finally spoke.

“Mrs. Carter, I understand this is upsetting, but we need to proceed carefully.””

I nodded.

“I understand.””

She looked at Benjamin.

“Mr. Carter, where is this room now?””

Benjamin smiled.

“Behind the wall.””

Richard stood.

“Your Honor, I strongly recommend that my client not answer further questions.””

Judge Hawkins nodded.

“I agree.””

Benjamin looked at me.

“But she deserves to know.””

“Benjamin,” Richard warned.

He continued.

“My father kept everything there.””

“What everything?””

“The original contracts.””

“The will?””

“Yes.””

“The ownership documents?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you destroy them?””

His smile disappeared.

“Because I didn't know they were there.””

I looked at him.

“You didn't?””

“My father never trusted me.””

A strange silence followed.

For the first time, Benjamin sounded less like the powerful businessman and more like a son who had spent his entire life trying to impress a father who never believed in him.

Then I remembered the recording.

*If you hurt Emma, she gets everything.*

His father hadn't protected me because he loved me more than his son.

He had protected me because he knew exactly what his son had become.

Judge Hawkins called for a recess until the following morning.

Outside the courtroom, reporters waited.

Cameras flashed.

Questions came from every direction.

“Mrs. Carter, did Benjamin Carter forge your signature?””

“Did you know the company was worth millions?””

“Are you seeking control of Carter Holdings?””

Michael guided me toward the elevator.

“No comment,” he said.

The elevator doors opened.

We stepped inside.

Then Veronica appeared.

“Emma.””

I turned.

She stood several feet away.

Her face was exhausted.

“Can I talk to you?””

Michael looked at me.

I nodded.

He stepped out of the elevator.

“I'll be downstairs.””

The doors closed.

Veronica stood beside me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she said, “I need to tell you something before tomorrow.””

“What?””

“Your father-in-law didn't just leave you the company.””

I looked at her.

“What else?””

“He left you proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Benjamin didn't start the company.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“His father did.””

The elevator doors opened.

We stepped into the lobby.

“What does that mean?””

“Your father-in-law had been running a separate business before Carter Holdings existed.””

“And Benjamin?””

“He took it.””

“How?””

“Your father-in-law trusted him.””

Veronica shook her head.

“That was his mistake.””

We walked outside.

The evening air was cold.

I hugged my coat around myself.

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because I'm done protecting him.””

She reached into her purse.

She handed me a folded piece of paper.

“This is a copy of the first incorporation filing.””

I opened it.

The company name was different.

The founder was Benjamin's father.

But beside his name was another.

*Emma Carter.*

I looked at Veronica.

“My name?””

“You were listed before Benjamin.””

I couldn't speak.

She continued.

“Your father-in-law added you because he believed you were the only person who could keep the company honest.””

I looked at the document again.

“Why did he never tell me?””

“He tried.””

“When?””

“On the night before he died.””

I looked up.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

She hesitated.

“He asked Benjamin to bring you to the office.””

“Did he?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Benjamin was afraid you would hear what his father planned to tell you.””

“What did he plan to tell me?””

Veronica's eyes filled.

“That the company was legally yours.””

I stared at her.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“And Benjamin knew it.””

My phone rang.

Michael.

I answered.

“Michael?””

His voice was urgent.

“Emma, where are you?””

“Outside the courthouse.””

“Don't go home.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because someone broke into the house.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“The police are there.””

“Did they take anything?””

Michael was silent for a second.

“Yes.””

“What?””

“The box.””

My eyes went to the street.

“Which box?””

“The one your father-in-law left you.””

I looked at Veronica.

She understood immediately.

“Who took it?””

“We don't know.””

“Was anything else missing?””

“No.””

“Then why only that?””

Michael's voice dropped.

“Because whoever broke in knew exactly what they were looking for.””

The call ended.

Veronica touched my arm.

“Emma.””

I looked at her.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

She whispered:

“The box wasn't the evidence.””

I frowned.

“Then what was?””

“The key.””

My hand instinctively went to my pocket.

The brass key was still there.

Or at least I thought it was.

I reached inside.

My fingers touched nothing.

May you like

My heart dropped.

The key was gone.
