Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Buried
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
*We need to protect him from Eric.*
My father’s handwriting.
I knew it.
The sharp angle of the letters.
The way he pressed harder on certain words.
I had seen that handwriting my entire life.
Birthday cards.
Notes left on the kitchen counter.
The last letter he wrote before he passed away.
There was no mistake.
My father had known Eric.
My father had known Vanessa.
And somehow, he had known about Mason.
I looked up.
“Explain.””
Vanessa didn’t move.
She looked like she had been waiting years for this moment and still wasn’t ready for it.
“I can’t.””
My voice hardened.
“You have to.””
She looked down.
“Because I don’t know everything.””
“That’s not good enough anymore.””
“I know.””
I placed the photo on the table.
“My father died two years ago.””
“I know.””
“He never mentioned you.””
“I know.””
“He never mentioned Eric.””
“I know.””
I pointed at the photograph.
“But he was there.””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Because your father was the first person who believed me.””
I stared at her.
“About what?””
“About Eric.””
The answer came quietly.
“After Emma died, everyone believed Eric’s version.””
“What version?””
“That he was a grieving father who made one terrible mistake.””
My jaw tightened.
“And you believed something else.””
“Yes.””
“What did you believe?””
“That it wasn’t a mistake.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at the photograph again.
My father standing beside a newborn baby.
A baby who was supposed to be Mason.
A baby whose identity suddenly felt like a question mark.
“What did my father know?””
Vanessa sat down.
“He knew Eric was lying.””
“About Mason?””
“Yes.””
“About what?””
She looked at me.
“About where he came from.””
I felt a chill.
“Where he came from?””
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I need you to stop talking around things.””
She closed her eyes.
“You’re right.””
For a moment, she looked like the woman I thought I knew.
Someone who was finally tired of carrying secrets.
“Mason was born after Eric and I separated.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“We were separated for almost a year before Mason was born.””
I stared.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“I know.””
“Then why did everyone think he was Eric’s son?””
“Because Eric wanted them to.””
“Why?””
Vanessa’s voice became quieter.
“Because Eric wanted control.””
The word made sense.
Control.
Everything connected to him seemed to be about control.
The messages.
The bracelet.
The fear.
The way Lily was pulled into a story she never should have known.
“What does my father have to do with this?””
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
“Your father knew Mason’s biological father.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation told me the answer would hurt.
“Daniel…”
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Your father’s best friend.””
I felt confused.
Then angry.
“What?””
“His name was Thomas.””
I froze.
Thomas.
A name I knew.
A name from my childhood.
My father’s closest friend.
A man who used to bring me baseball cards.
A man who disappeared from our lives when I was a teenager.
“He died.””
“Yes.””
“Years ago.””
“Yes.””
I stood up.
“This is insane.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You’re telling me my father knew Mason wasn’t Eric’s son?””
“Yes.””
“And he never told me?””
“I don’t know why.””
I walked away.
My mind was full of memories.
My father.
His silence.
The years I thought he was simply private.
The secrets he carried.
“Why would my father protect Mason?””
Vanessa’s answer was immediate.
“Because Mason was innocent.””
I stopped.
She continued.
“Your father believed children shouldn’t pay for adults’ mistakes.””
That sounded exactly like him.
My father had always been that way.
He was strict.
But fair.
He used to tell me:
“A child doesn’t choose the mess they’re born into.””
I sat down.
Slowly.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you would hate me.””
“Why?””
“Because the truth is complicated.””
“Try me.””
She looked at the stairs.
At Lily’s room.
Then back at me.
“After Emma died, I was broken.””
I listened.
“I blamed myself.””
She swallowed.
“And then I realized I was pregnant.””
My eyes widened.
“Pregnant?””
She nodded.
“With Mason.””
I tried to process.
“So Mason was born after Emma.””
“Yes.””
“And Eric wasn’t his father.””
“No.””
“Then Thomas was?””
“Yes.””
The room felt unreal.
“Did Eric know?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he claim Mason?””
Vanessa’s hands tightened.
“Because Thomas died before Mason was born.””
“And?””
“And Eric knew I had no one.””
The words were heavy.
“He used that.””
I understood.
Eric didn’t want a child.
He wanted leverage.
“He threatened you.””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
Vanessa looked away.
“He said if I ever told anyone, he would make sure I lost Mason.””
I felt anger rising.
“He couldn’t do that.””
“He convinced me he could.””
“And my father?””
“He found out.””
“How?””
“Thomas left him something.””
“What?””
“A letter.””
My heart started racing.
“Where is it?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I don’t have it.””
“Who does?””
She was silent.
Then:
“Eric.””
Everything went cold.
“Eric has my father’s letter?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
“But he has it.””
“Yes.””
“And he’s been using it.””
Vanessa nodded.
“That’s why he came back.””
I looked at my phone.
At all the messages.
All the threats.
All the games.
Eric wasn’t just trying to hurt Vanessa.
He was trying to control the entire story.
“Why send me the photos?””
“Because he wants you angry at me.””
“Why?””
“Because if you leave me, I lose my protection.””
I frowned.
“What protection?””
Vanessa looked toward Lily’s room.
“You.””
The answer surprised me.
“What?””
“Eric is afraid of you.””
I almost laughed.
“Why?””
“Because you don’t know how powerful you are.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
“Your father spent years collecting evidence.””
“Against Eric?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew Eric would eventually hurt more people.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Where is the evidence?””
Vanessa looked at the envelope.
“There’s something else inside.””
I opened it again.
Behind the photograph was a small piece of paper.
A note.
Not my father’s handwriting.
Someone else’s.
Eric’s.
My hands shook as I read it.
*You took my family from me. I’ll take yours.*
I looked at Vanessa.
“When did you get this?””
“Three years ago.””
“You had this the entire time?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She started crying.
“Because I thought if I ignored him, he would disappear.””
I stared at her.
“You knew he was threatening us.””
“I thought I could handle it.””
“You couldn’t.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I couldn’t.””
For the first time, I saw Vanessa not as a villain.
Not as innocent.
As someone who had made terrible choices because she was afraid.
But fear didn’t matter now.
Because Lily was involved.
My daughter.
My responsibility.
I stood up.
“We’re leaving tonight.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Daniel…”
“I’m taking Lily somewhere safe.””
Her face fell.
“Are you leaving me?””
I looked at her.
I wanted to answer.
But I couldn’t.
Because the truth was complicated.
“I don’t know.””
She nodded.
A painful acceptance.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No voice.
Just silence.
Then a recording played.
A child’s voice.
Mason.
My blood froze.
“Mom said I have to keep the secret.””
A pause.
Then Mason whispered:
“But I don’t want to anymore.””
The recording ended.
A message appeared.
*Ask Mason what happened the night Emma died.*
I looked toward the stairs.
Toward the room where Mason was sleeping.
May you like
Because suddenly, the one person who might know the final piece of the truth…
was the child who had been carrying it all along.
