Amused

Chapter 8: The Night Everything Changed

The words stayed in the air.

*Because I wasn’t alone that night.*

I stared at Vanessa.

My first instinct was anger.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

Anger.

Because every time I thought we had reached the truth, another door opened behind it.

Another secret.

Another piece of a story I had never been allowed to hear.

“Who were you with?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes moved toward the stairs.

Toward Lily’s room.

Even now, even after everything, she was thinking about protecting our daughter from the truth.

But I needed the truth.

“I need to know.””

She sat down slowly.

Her hands shook.

“It was my sister.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“My sister, Claire.””

I frowned.

“You have a sister?””

Vanessa looked at me.

The question hurt her.

“Yes.””

I realized what I had said.

And how much I truly didn’t know.

After years together.

After marriage.

After building a home.

There were still parts of her life that were strangers to me.

“Why have I never met her?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because she doesn’t want anything to do with me.””

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because of Emma.””

The answer made my chest tighten.

“What happened?””

Vanessa stared at the table.

“The night Emma died, Claire was with me.””

“Where?””

“At the hospital.””

I waited.

She took a deep breath.

“She was the one who drove me there.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I wasn’t with Eric when it happened.””

The words came out quickly.

Almost like she needed to correct something.

“Then where were you?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“At work.””

I froze.

“At work?””

“Yes.””

“But Eric was supposed to be watching Emma.””

“He was.””

“Then why does someone think you were hiding something?””

Vanessa looked at my phone.

“The person who sent that message wants you to believe I caused it.””

“Did you?””

Her eyes lifted.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Firm.

For the first time all night, I believed her without hesitation.

But belief didn’t remove the questions.

“Then what are you hiding?””

Vanessa looked broken.

“I hid how bad things were.””

“With Eric?””

“Yes.””

She rubbed her hands together.

“Before Emma died, Eric had been getting worse.””

“Worse how?””

“He became unpredictable.””

“Did he hurt you?””

“No.””

She paused.

“He hurt people around him.””

The memory seemed painful.

“After Emma died, everyone blamed him.””

“Because he was responsible.””

“Yes.””

“Then why would anyone think you were involved?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because I lied.””

The words landed hard.

“What did you lie about?””

She took a long breath.

“The night Emma died…”

She stopped.

“I told everyone I was at work until midnight.””

“And?””

“I wasn’t.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where were you?””

She looked down.

“I was looking for Eric.””

“Why?””

“Because earlier that day, we had a fight.””

“What kind of fight?””

“The kind where he said things that scared me.””

“What things?””

She swallowed.

“He said if I tried to take Mason away from him, I’d regret it.””

The room went silent.

“And you went to confront him?””

“Yes.””

“Alone?””

“Yes.””

“Vanessa…”

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know it was stupid.””

“What happened?””

“I got to his apartment.””

“And?””

“He wasn’t there.””

She looked at me.

“I thought he had taken Emma.””

My heart sank.

“What did you do?””

“I called Claire.””

“And then?””

“We searched.””

“For how long?””

“Almost an hour.””

“And then?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Then we found out.””

I didn’t need her to explain.

I knew.

But there was something bothering me.

“If you weren’t there…”

“Why didn’t I tell the police?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked away.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That they would think I abandoned my daughter.””

I was quiet.

Because I understood.

A parent’s worst fear was being seen as the person who failed their child.

“I thought everyone would ask why I wasn’t home.””

She wiped her eyes.

“And the answer was humiliating.””

“What was the answer?””

“I was trying to save my other child from a man I knew was dangerous.””

That sentence changed something.

Not everything.

But something.

Because suddenly, Vanessa wasn’t just the woman who hid things.

She was also someone who had been drowning in fear.

But then I remembered Lily.

The empty plate.

The fear.

The bracelet.

The damage.

“Why didn’t you tell me about Emma?””

She looked at me.

“Because I thought if I told you everything…”

She stopped.

“What?””

“You would see me differently.””

I almost laughed.

“Vanessa, I’m seeing you differently because you hid it.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

The honesty was painful.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

I looked down.

A new photo.

This time, it was not from the unknown number.

It was from Eric.

A direct message.

*You finally asked the right questions.*

My blood ran cold.

Another message appeared.

*But Vanessa still hasn’t told you the whole truth.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She saw the screen.

Her face changed.

“Don’t listen to him.””

“Why?””

“Because he wants to destroy me.””

“Maybe.””

The word hurt her.

But I continued.

“And maybe you’re still hiding something.””

She looked down.

“I am.””

The answer shocked me.

“What?””

She closed her eyes.

“There’s one more thing.””

I waited.

A part of me didn’t want to hear it.

But I needed to.

“What?””

“Emma wasn’t the only reason Eric came back.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Then why?””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“Because of Mason.””

“What about him?””

She hesitated.

“Three months before Emma died…”

The pause was unbearable.

“Eric told me he wasn’t Mason’s biological father.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I didn’t believe him.””

“Why would he say that?””

“I thought he was trying to hurt me.””

“Was he?””

She didn’t answer.

And that scared me.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“I found out recently.””

“Found out what?””

“That Eric was telling the truth.””

The room spun.

“Mason isn’t his son?””

“No.””

“Then whose son is he?””

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

“I don’t know.””

The answer felt impossible.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“How can you not know?””

“Because the man who might know…”

She stopped.

“Who?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father?””

She nodded.

I stared at her.

My father had died two years before I met Vanessa.

He had never met Mason.

Never spoken about him.

Never been part of this story.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

“Then why say it?””

“Because Eric showed me something.””

“What?””

Vanessa reached into a drawer.

Her hands shook as she pulled out an envelope.

“I kept this because I didn’t know what to do.””

She handed it to me.

Inside was an old photograph.

A hospital room.

A newborn baby.

And three adults standing beside him.

Vanessa.

Eric.

And my father.

I couldn’t breathe.

On the back of the photo was a date.

A date from twelve years ago.

Before I had ever met Vanessa.

Before I knew her name.

Before any of this.

And written underneath, in my father’s handwriting, were six words:

*We need to protect him from Eric.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Because we both understood the same thing.
