Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth She Deserved

The call ended before I could respond.

I immediately called back.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

I stared at the screen.

A blocked number.

A hidden person.

Another secret.

It felt like my entire life had become a puzzle where everyone had pieces except me.

Emily touched my arm.

“Who was that?””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

She swallowed.

“But they know something.””

“Yes.””

“What?””

I looked at the necklace.

The note.

The past fifteen years.

“I think Daniel’s return wasn’t about becoming your father.””

Emily looked away.

“Then what was it about?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t want to destroy the small amount of peace we had just rebuilt.

But lies had already done enough damage.

She deserved the truth.

That evening, Emily and I met Rachel at her house.

For the first time in days, we were all sitting in the same room.

But everything felt different.

Not broken.

Not fixed.

Just honest.

Rachel looked at Emily.

“There are things I should have told you.””

Emily nodded.

“I know.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“I know.””

“But protecting you meant keeping secrets.””

Emily looked down.

“And secrets became lies.””

Rachel started crying.

“Yes.””

I watched my daughter.

She wasn’t angry.

That surprised me.

She was listening.

Really listening.

Rachel took out another folder.

“I found this after you left.””

She handed it to Emily.

“What is it?””

“Your adoption records.””

Emily opened it.

She read silently.

Then her expression changed.

“What is this?””

Rachel looked at me.

Then at her.

“Your father didn’t disappear because he didn’t love you.””

Emily looked up.

“Then why?””

Rachel took a breath.

“Because someone convinced him that leaving was his only option.””

Silence.

“Who?””

Rachel shook her head.

“We don’t know.””

Emily looked at me.

“Do you know?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She looked back at the papers.

Then she stopped.

“What does this mean?””

I leaned closer.

“What?””

She pointed.

“There’s a payment record.””

My heart stopped.

Rachel moved closer.

“What?””

Emily turned the page.

“There’s a transfer.””

I looked.

A bank transfer.

Daniel’s name.

A large amount of money.

The date was two days before he signed away his rights.

Nobody spoke.

Then Emily whispered:

“He was paid.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Emily looked devastated.

Not angry.

Devastated.

Because she wasn’t just losing the version of Daniel she believed.

She was losing the version of her childhood.

“I defended him.””

Her voice broke.

“I hurt you because I defended him.””

I moved toward her.

“Emily.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

She wiped her face.

“I need to say this.””

I stopped.

“I spent years thinking you were the person standing between me and my father.””

She looked at me.

“But you were the person standing there when he wasn’t.””

The words were simple.

But they meant everything.

I sat beside her.

She leaned against me.

Just for a moment.

Then her phone rang.

Daniel.

She looked at the screen.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, she answered.

“Hello?””

His voice was loud enough that I could hear his panic.

“Emily, where are you?””

“At Mom’s.””

A pause.

“Are you with Mark?””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

Another pause.

“Emily, you need to listen to me.””

Her expression changed.

“Why?””

“Because he’s lying to you.””

She almost laughed.

“About what?””

“About the adoption.””

I looked at Rachel.

Daniel continued.

“You don’t know the whole truth.””

Emily’s voice became colder.

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

“Daniel?””

Finally, he said:

“I didn’t take the money.””

Emily froze.

“What money?””

I watched her face.

She hadn’t told him.

She was testing him.

Daniel realized too late.

“What did Mark tell you?””

Emily stood up.

“Nothing.””

Her voice was shaking.

“I didn’t tell you about any money.””

Silence.

Long silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Oh.””

That one word said everything.

Emily closed her eyes.

“Who paid you?””

No answer.

“Who paid you?””

His voice changed.

The confidence was gone.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

Emily’s tears fell.

“You can’t explain something you lied about for fifteen years.””

“Emily—”

“Who paid you?””

A long pause.

Then Daniel said a name.

A name none of us expected.

And when Emily heard it…

She dropped the phone.

May you like

Because the person who paid Daniel wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had been part of our family the entire time.
