Chapter 5: The Night Everything Changed
I didn’t go home.
Not immediately.
I drove for almost an hour without knowing where I was going.
The city lights blurred through the windshield.
Every street reminded me of something.
The park where Emily learned to ride a bike.
The diner where we celebrated her first paycheck.
The bookstore where she spent an entire afternoon choosing a college textbook she couldn’t afford.
I had spent fifteen years collecting memories.
Now it felt like someone was trying to turn them into evidence against me.
Eventually, I pulled into the parking lot of the old apartment building where Rachel and I lived when Emily was young.
The building looked smaller.
Everything does when you return to a place that holds your past.
I sat there until my phone rang.
Rachel.
I answered.
“Did you know?””
Her voice was quiet.
“Know what?””
“That Daniel had that document.””
I closed my eyes.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Mark…”
“Tell me the truth.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Rachel.””
“I was scared.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Scared of what?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Scared that if Emily knew everything, she would hate me.””
I looked at the old building.
“The night before the adoption.””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“What happened?””
Rachel began crying.
“Daniel came to see her.””
I said nothing.
“He had disappeared for almost two years. Then suddenly he showed up.””
I remembered that.
But not everything.
Rachel continued.
“He said he wanted to be involved again.””
“And?””
“And then he left.””
I frowned.
“That’s not what Daniel told Emily.””
“I know.””
I closed my eyes.
“What happened that night?””
Rachel’s voice broke.
“He signed something.””
“What?””
“A temporary agreement.””
I sat up.
“What kind of agreement?””
“The kind where he admitted he couldn’t provide a stable home.””
The words hung in the air.
I remembered.
I remembered the attorney telling me there were complications.
I remembered Rachel crying.
I remembered holding Emily while she slept.
But I never knew the details.
“Why wasn’t that in the file?””
“It was.””
“Then why did he show Emily a page that made me look like I pushed him away?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
And then I heard something.
Paper moving.
“Rachel?””
She whispered:
“I have something.””
“What?””
“The original file.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
“At home.””
“I’m coming.””
When I arrived, Rachel was waiting at the door.
She looked like she hadn’t slept.
She handed me a thick folder.
“I kept it because I knew someday this might happen.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“I hoped it wouldn’t.””
We sat at the kitchen table.
Rachel opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Letters.
Court records.
And one handwritten statement.
I picked it up.
The handwriting was familiar.
Daniel’s.
I read it.
*I, Daniel Carter, acknowledge that I have not maintained consistent involvement in Emily’s life and understand that adoption by Mark Anderson is in Emily’s best interest.*
I stopped.
The room went quiet.
“He wrote that?”” I asked.
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
I read the next line.
*I do not object to the adoption and agree that Mark has acted as a father figure in Emily’s life.*
My eyes burned.
Not because I won.
Because I realized the person who hurt me had once admitted the truth.
Then I saw the date.
The same date as the document Daniel showed us.
My expression changed.
“What?””
Rachel looked at me.
“They’re the same day.””
I looked closer.
Two documents.
Same date.
Same signatures.
But different wording.
My stomach dropped.
“Someone altered this.””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
She looked afraid.
And that fear returned.
“Mark…”
“Who?””
She swallowed.
“Daniel had a friend who worked at the legal office.””
The room became silent.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
Daniel didn’t just return.
He prepared.
He didn’t accidentally hurt me.
He planned it.
I stood up.
“I need to talk to Emily.””
Rachel grabbed my arm.
“Be careful.””
I looked at her.
“She needs to know.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She needs to know because she’s making decisions based on a lie.””
The next morning, I went to Emily’s apartment.
The place I helped her move into.
The place I had paid for.
The place she now shared with a life I wasn’t part of.
I knocked.
No answer.
I knocked again.
Finally, the door opened.
Emily froze.
“Mark?””
I looked at her.
“I need you to listen.””
She glanced behind her.
And my heart sank.
Because Daniel was there.
He walked into view.
“You again.””
I ignored him.
I looked only at Emily.
“I found something.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t confuse her.””
I laughed quietly.
“Confuse her?””
I held up the folder.
“This is the original adoption file.””
Emily’s eyes moved to it.
Daniel’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
She noticed.
“What is that?””
Daniel answered quickly.
“Nothing.””
I looked at Emily.
“Ask him why he never showed you this page.””
Daniel’s voice sharpened.
“Mark.””
Emily looked between us.
“What page?””
I opened the folder.
Then I pulled out the statement.
The one with Daniel’s signature.
Emily read it.
Her face changed.
Slowly.
Confusion.
Shock.
Fear.
“Dad wrote this?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“It’s not what you think.””
Emily looked at him.
“Then what is it?””
For the first time, Daniel had no immediate answer.
And that was when Emily noticed something.
Something I had noticed years ago.
A truth hidden beneath all the lies.
She looked at Daniel and whispered:
May you like
“Why did you tell me Mark wanted you gone…
when you were the one who left?””
