Amused

Chapter 3: The Truth He Buried

The message was only six sentences.

But it changed everything.

Rachel handed me the phone.

I read it slowly.

*Daniel: She needs to know who her real family is.*

My jaw tightened.

The next sentence was worse.

*Daniel: Mark means well, but he has always been afraid she would choose me.*

I looked at Rachel.

“He sent this to you?””

She nodded.

“Two weeks ago.””

“Why didn’t you show me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought Emily would see through him.””

I looked back at the phone.

That was the part that hurt most.

Not Daniel.

Not his lies.

Emily.

Because I had spent years believing our bond was strong enough to survive anything.

Maybe I was wrong.

Or maybe someone had spent a long time weakening it.

I gave the phone back.

“What else?””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“There’s more.””

She opened another message.

This one was from Daniel to Emily.

I read it.

*Your dad deserves a chance to know you. The man who raised you can’t erase the man who created you.*

I stared at the words.

Created.

That word.

A biological connection.

A scientific fact.

Something I could never compete with.

But I never tried to.

That was what Daniel didn’t understand.

I didn’t need to erase him.

I just wanted a place beside her.

A place I thought I had earned.

“I never told her he wasn’t her father,” I said quietly.

Rachel nodded.

“I know.””

“I encouraged her to see him.””

“I know.””

“I defended him when she was angry at him.””

“I know, Mark.””

Her voice broke.

“And that’s why this is so wrong.””

I sat down.

For the first time all day, I felt tired.

Not angry.

Not heartbroken.

Just tired.

Fifteen years of memories were suddenly being questioned.

Every bedtime story.

Every school project.

Every conversation.

Not by me.

By the person I did it all for.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message from Emily.

I almost didn’t open it.

But I did.

*Emily: I think we need to talk in person.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*Emily: Tomorrow. Daniel will be there too.*

I felt something inside me close.

Not because Daniel would be there.

Because Emily thought I needed someone else present.

Like I was dangerous.

Like I was someone she needed protection from.

Rachel watched my face.

“What did she say?””

I put the phone down.

“She wants to meet tomorrow.””

“Good.””

I looked at her.

“With Daniel.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“No.””

I didn’t answer.

“Mark, don’t let him control that conversation.””

I looked at the ceiling.

“I don’t know if I have anything left to say.””

Rachel moved closer.

“Yes, you do.””

“What?””

“The truth.””

I smiled sadly.

“The truth doesn’t always win.””

She didn’t respond.

Because she knew.

We had both seen enough of life to know that.

The next morning, I arrived at the coffee shop ten minutes early.

I chose a table near the window.

The same kind of place where I used to take Emily after school.

She loved hot chocolate with extra whipped cream.

Even at twenty-two, she still ordered it sometimes.

I wondered if she remembered that.

I wondered if she remembered anything.

The door opened.

Emily walked in.

Daniel followed.

My daughter looked beautiful.

That hurt.

Because even after everything, my first thought was still:

She looks happy.

She saw me.

Stopped.

Then walked over.

“Hi, Mark.””

I nodded.

“Hi, Emily.””

Daniel smiled.

“Glad we could all talk.””

I looked at him.

There was something different about him.

Confidence.

Like he already knew how this conversation would end.

We sat down.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Emily folded her hands.

“I don’t want this to turn into an argument.””

“It won’t,” I said.

She looked surprised.

“I just want honesty.””

I nodded.

“Okay.””

She glanced at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Did you ever resent that I wasn’t your biological daughter?””

The question was so unexpected that I almost laughed.

But I didn’t.

“No.””

“Never?””

“Never.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“But you must have felt something.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He raised his eyebrows.

“What?””

I answered honestly.

“I felt lucky.””

Emily looked down.

I continued.

“Because I got to choose you.””

The table went silent.

For one second, I saw something flicker in her eyes.

A memory.

A doubt.

Then Daniel spoke.

“That sounds nice.””

His tone was calm.

Too calm.

“But feelings don’t change facts.””

I looked at him.

“No. They don’t.””

“Exactly.””

He nodded toward Emily.

“She deserves to know her real father.””

I looked at Emily.

“And what do you want?””

Her lips parted.

But before she answered, Daniel placed a folder on the table.

A thick folder.

My eyes moved to it.

“What is that?””

Daniel smiled.

“Something Emily should have seen a long time ago.””

Emily looked nervous.

I reached for the folder.

But Daniel placed his hand on it first.

“Before you open it,” he said, “you should know one thing.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

His smile disappeared.

“The adoption wasn’t as simple as you think.””

My heart stopped.

Because suddenly I wasn’t wondering why Emily pushed me away.

I was wondering what Daniel had been hiding from both of us.

May you like

And when he finally opened the folder…

I saw my own signature on the first page.
