Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the Money
We returned to Ohio with one goal.
Answers.
Not apologies.
Not excuses.
Answers.
Danny confronted our father first.
I watched from the doorway as the man who once seemed impossible to challenge suddenly looked old.
"Did you know?"" Danny asked.
Our father looked confused.
"Know what?""
"Everything.""
Silence.
Then he sat down.
That was when I knew.
Guilty people don't ask what they are being accused of.
They ask how much you know.
"You took her money.""
His face changed.
"I didn't take anything.""
Danny threw the notebook onto the table.
"Then explain.""
Our father looked at the pages.
His shoulders dropped.
"I was trying to fix things.""
I almost laughed.
Everyone in my family used that sentence.
I was protecting you.
I was fixing things.
I was helping.
Nobody ever said:
I hurt you.
"I sent you money for emergencies," I said.
He looked at me.
"I know.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"You knew I was working nights. You knew I was exhausted. You knew I was pregnant.""
His eyes lowered.
"And you still let me believe I was helping you survive.""
He didn't answer.
Danny opened the bank documents.
"What was the account?""
Our father looked away.
"Investment.""
"Whose?""
Another silence.
Then:
"Yours.""
I froze.
"What?""
He rubbed his face.
"Your mother wanted to create a fund.""
"For me?""
He nodded.
"She said it was your future.""
I stared.
"Then why hide it?""
Because he couldn't answer.
Because the truth was uglier.
Finally he whispered:
"Because she started using it.""
My heart stopped.
"Using it for what?""
He looked ashamed.
"Debt.""
The room went silent.
Years of my life.
Years of sacrifice.
Not for a house.
Not for family emergencies.
For secrets.
For mistakes.
For a life my parents couldn't afford but wanted to pretend they had.
My mother appeared in the doorway.
She had heard everything.
"I was going to pay it back.""
I turned.
"When?""
She cried.
"I don't know.""
That answer destroyed something inside me.
Not because it was cruel.
Because it was honest.
She never had a plan.
She just expected me to keep giving.
Forever.
"I was your daughter.""
Her face collapsed.
"I know.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You knew I was your daughter when you needed money.""
I looked at her.
"But when I needed a mother, you didn't know me.""
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Evelyn.
I answered.
"Hello?""
Her voice sounded nervous.
"Tori, there's something else.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course there was.
"What?""
A pause.
"I found the original adoption records.""
My heart raced.
"Okay.""
"They were never completed.""
I sat down.
"What does that mean?""
Her voice dropped.
"It means legally...""
She stopped.
"Legally what?""
The answer came quietly.
"You were never adopted.""
I looked around the room.
At my parents.
At Danny.
At the house where I grew up.
Everything I thought I knew shifted.
My entire identity.
My entire childhood.
Then Evelyn said:
"Tori, there's something else written on the paperwork.""
"What?""
She took a breath.
"Your parents weren't listed as adoptive parents.""
I stood.
"Then who were they?""
May you like
Her answer came after a long silence.
"They were listed as temporary guardians.""
