Chapter 5: The Secret Everyone Buried
Nobody spoke for almost a minute.
The rain outside became louder.
Finally, June sat down.
"Tori.""
I couldn't move.
"What is she talking about?""
June looked at my mother.
Then at me.
"I wanted to tell you.""
My voice broke.
"But you didn't.""
"No.""
"Why?""
June's eyes filled with tears.
"Because your mother begged me.""
I felt numb.
"Begged you to hide what?""
June took a deep breath.
"The truth about where you came from.""
Danny looked between us.
"What does that mean?""
June reached for an old photograph from the cabinet.
She handed it to me.
A woman stood beside a hospital bed.
A baby in her arms.
My hands shook.
"Who is she?""
June whispered:
"Your birth mother.""
The room tilted.
I stared at the photograph.
"That's impossible.""
June shook her head.
"No, sweetheart.""
I looked at my mother.
She was crying.
Not fake tears.
Not the kind she used when she wanted people to comfort her.
Real tears.
"I was nineteen," she whispered.
I looked at her.
"You adopted me?""
She nodded.
The word felt strange.
Not because adoption changed how I saw her.
But because it explained everything I never understood.
Why I always felt like I had to earn love.
Why affection came with conditions.
Why being useful mattered more than being happy.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
My mother covered her face.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
She looked at me.
"Of losing you.""
I laughed sadly.
"You spent four years pretending you lost me.""
She had no answer.
June spoke quietly.
"Your mother thought if you knew, you would search for your birth family.""
"And?""
"And she was afraid you would find out something.""
I looked at the photograph.
"What?""
June hesitated.
Then she said:
"Your birth mother never gave you away.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
The room went silent.
June reached into the drawer and pulled out another envelope.
Older.
More fragile.
"This came two years after your adoption.""
I stared.
"Why didn't I see this?""
June looked at my mother.
"Because she took it.""
My mother closed her eyes.
The truth was finally standing in the room with us.
Not as a rumor.
Not as a family story.
As a person.
As a choice.
As a betrayal.
Danny whispered:
"Mom...""
My mother looked broken.
"I thought I was protecting us.""
I looked at the woman who raised me.
The woman who taught me to walk.
The woman who also erased pieces of my life whenever they threatened her control.
"Who is my birth mother?""
June handed me the envelope.
On the front was a name.
A name I had never heard before.
But one that would change everything.
I opened it.
The first line made my hands tremble.
*Dear Victoria,*
*I have been looking for you for twenty-nine years.*
May you like
And beneath that was a sentence that made me forget how to breathe.
*Your mother didn't give you away. She took you.*
