Chapter 3: The Letter That Vanished

I spent that night at June's house.

My daughter slept in the guest room, surrounded by stuffed animals June had saved from my childhood.

I sat at the kitchen table with Danny until midnight.

The empty letter sat between us.

"It doesn't make sense," he said.

I stared at the paper.

"I wrote something.""

"I believe you.""

"Then where did it go?""

Danny rubbed his face.

"Mom.""

The answer hung between us.

Neither of us wanted to say it.

Because once you admit someone could do something cruel, you have to admit they were capable of more.

The next morning, I walked into First Grace Church.

The place where my mother planned to rewrite history.

People stopped talking when they saw me.

I recognized some faces.

Neighbors.

Old teachers.

People who watched me grow up.

A woman near the entrance whispered:

"That's Tori?""

My mother appeared at the front.

Perfect hair.

Perfect dress.

Perfect smile.

She walked toward me with open arms.

"My baby.""

I stepped back.

Her smile froze.

"Tori.""

"Don't.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Not here.""

I almost laughed.

"That's exactly where you wanted me.""

People were watching.

Good.

For once, I wanted witnesses.

My mother lowered her voice.

"We can talk privately.""

"No.""

I looked around.

"Everyone already heard your version.""

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

"Tori, please.""

I looked at her.

"Tell them.""

Silence.

"Tell them I disappeared.""

My mother's lips parted.

"Tell them I abandoned my family.""

She glanced around.

People were listening.

Then she did something I never expected.

She cried.

"I was just protecting everyone.""

My stomach turned.

"Protecting them from what?""

She whispered:

"The truth.""

Before I could answer, Danny stepped forward.

"No.""

My mother looked at him.

"Danny.""

He held up the notebook.

Her face went white.

"Where did you get that?""

The church became silent.

Danny's voice shook.

"Why did you keep records of money she sent but tell everyone she abandoned us?""

My mother's expression hardened.

"This is a family matter.""

"No," Danny said.

"This is my sister's life.""

For the first time in years, someone stood beside me.

Not behind me.

Not after the damage.

Beside me.

My father appeared from the hallway.

"Tori.""

I turned.

He looked older.

Smaller.

But I remembered the phone call.

*Don't upset your mother.*

He walked toward us.

"You don't understand everything.""

I laughed softly.

"No, Dad.""

I looked at the church.

"That's the problem.""

A man near the back stepped forward.

I recognized him.

My father's old business partner.

He looked nervous.

"Tori...""

I frowned.

"What?""

He glanced at my parents.

Then back at me.

"I think you should know something.""

My mother whispered:

"Don't.""

The man ignored her.

"Your father never repaired the house.""

The room went still.

Danny looked confused.

"What are you talking about?""

The man swallowed.

"The money wasn't for the house.""

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

"Then what was it for?""

He looked at my mother.

May you like

And said:

"Ask her about the account she opened in your name.""
