Amused
The Daughter I Lost Twice / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Name On The Birth Certificate

Renee asked us to meet at home.

Not because it was comfortable.

Because it was where everything started.

The house felt different when we walked inside.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

The same family photos.

But now every picture felt like it had a missing piece.

Renee sat at the kitchen table.

She looked older than she had yesterday.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like carrying a secret had finally become heavier than hiding it.

Aaliyah sat beside me.

Derek sat across from us.

For the first time in ten years, all the people connected to Aaliyah’s life were in one room.

And nobody knew what they were supposed to call each other.

Renee looked at her daughter.

“I owe you the truth.””

Aaliyah nodded.

“You do.””

Renee took a deep breath.

“When I was pregnant with you, I was already separated from Derek.””

Derek looked down.

“I know.””

“No,” Renee said quietly.

“You don’t know everything.””

The room became still.

She continued.

“We were fighting constantly. We were young. We were both angry.””

Aaliyah listened carefully.

“During that time, I met someone else.””

My stomach tightened.

Derek closed his eyes.

“I didn’t know.””

Renee looked at him.

“I know.””

Aaliyah whispered:

“So that’s my biological father?””

Renee shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Renee looked down.

“Because I never found out.””

Silence.

“You never found out?””

She shook her head.

“I was afraid. I was confused. I was ashamed.””

Her voice cracked.

“I told myself I would figure it out later.””

“Later?””

Aaliyah’s voice rose.

“You waited twenty-two years?””

Renee cried.

“I know.””

“No, Mom.””

Aaliyah stood.

“You don’t know.””

The pain in her voice was worse than anger.

“You let me spend my entire life wondering why Dad left.””

She looked at Derek.

“You let me believe Marcus was just temporary.””

Then she looked back at Renee.

“And you knew none of it was the full truth.””

Renee had no defense.

Because there wasn’t one.

I watched my wife break under the weight of everything she had hidden.

Then she reached into a drawer.

She pulled out a folder.

“I found him.””

Everyone became still.

“Who?””

Renee looked at Aaliyah.

“Your biological father.””

The room changed.

Aaliyah stopped breathing.

Derek leaned forward.

“When?””

“Recently.””

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

Renee looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.””

Again.

That word.

But this time, nobody accepted it.

“Afraid of what?”” I asked.

Her eyes filled.

“That he would want her.””

Nobody moved.

The truth was ugly.

Because it was honest.

Renee had spent years fighting ghosts.

She was afraid of losing Aaliyah to Derek.

Then afraid of losing her to another man.

Then afraid of losing her to the truth.

And every time fear won…

Someone else paid the price.

Aaliyah stared at the folder.

“Who is he?””

Renee pushed it across the table.

“I don’t know if you’re ready.””

Aaliyah laughed sadly.

“After everything I found out this week?””

She opened the folder.

The first thing she saw was a name.

Then a photograph.

Her face changed.

I looked at the paper.

And felt my entire body go cold.

Because I recognized the man.

Not from old stories.

Not from pictures.

From real life.

I had met him.

Years ago.

Aaliyah looked up.

“Marcus?””

I couldn’t answer.

“Why do you look like you know him?””

I stared at the photograph.

A man in his forties.

A man I had worked with.

A man who had shaken my hand.

A man who had once told me I was lucky to have such a great daughter.

My voice barely worked.

“Because I do.””

Derek looked at me.

“Who is he?””

I swallowed.

“The man who hired me ten years ago.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Aaliyah whispered:

“My father knew you?””

I looked at the photograph again.

And suddenly, a memory came back.

A conversation.

A warning.

A strange question from years ago.

A man who looked at Aaliyah and said:

“She has your eyes.””

At the time, I thought he was joking.

Now I wasn’t sure.

Renee covered her face.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

Aaliyah stood.

“You didn’t want me to know anything.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

She grabbed the folder.

“You made decisions for me my entire life.””

Then she looked at me.

And my heart broke.

“Everyone did.””

She walked toward the door.

“Aaliyah.””

She stopped.

I wanted to say something.

Anything.

But before I could, she turned.

“Marcus…”

“Yes?””

Her voice trembled.

“I need to know one thing.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Was any of it real?””

The question destroyed me.

Because after everything…

That was the only question that mattered.

I stood.

“Yes.””

She searched my face.

“You’re sure?””

I nodded.

“The day you rode your bike for the first time. Real.””

Tears formed in her eyes.

“The night you cried before your first exam. Real.””

She looked down.

“The day you got your acceptance letter?””

“Real.””

I stepped closer.

“Every single moment.””

She nodded slowly.

Then she whispered:

“Okay.””

And walked away.

But this time…

May you like

She didn’t run because she hated us.

She ran because she finally needed to find herself.
