Chapter 4: The Letter He Never Sent
The paper shook in my hands.
Not because it was old.
Because it had my name on it.
A name written by a man I had spent ten years hating.
Derek.
I stared at the first line again.
*Marcus, if you are reading this, then Renee finally told you the truth about why I disappeared…*
The coffee shop around me faded.
The voices.
The music.
The sound of cups being placed on tables.
Everything disappeared except those words.
Mrs. Collins watched me carefully.
“Marcus…”
I looked up.
“How long have you had this?””
She looked away.
“Ten years.””
Ten years.
The same amount of time I had spent waking up every morning believing I was building a family.
The same amount of time I believed Derek abandoned Aaliyah.
My fingers tightened around the letter.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
Her face tightened.
“Because Renee begged me not to.””
I stared at her.
“Renee knew?””
“Yes.””
“About this letter?””
“Yes.””
“And she still let me believe Derek walked away?””
Mrs. Collins swallowed.
“I don’t know what she told herself.””
I looked back at the letter.
That sentence was burning through my mind.
Why I disappeared.
Not left.
Not abandoned.
Disappeared.
There was a difference.
I unfolded the paper.
The handwriting was messy.
Like someone wrote it quickly.
Like someone was afraid they wouldn’t get another chance.
*Marcus,*
*I don’t expect you to forgive me.*
*Honestly, I don’t know if I deserve that.*
*But I need you to know I never stopped loving Aaliyah.*
My breath caught.
I continued reading.
*When Renee told me she was moving on, I thought I was losing my daughter. She said she needed stability. She said Aaliyah needed someone who could be a real father figure.*
I stopped.
My heart skipped.
Real father figure.
Those words looked different now.
*She told me if I fought her, she would make sure I never saw Aaliyah again.*
I looked up.
“No.””
Mrs. Collins lowered her eyes.
I did.
**I was young. I was angry. I was broke.
I had made mistakes. But I never stopped being her father.**
My vision blurred slightly.
Because I remembered all the times Aaliyah cried about Derek.
All the times she said he forgot her.
All the times I comforted her.
And now I didn’t know what was true.
*Renee said you were a good man. She said you would give Aaliyah the life I couldn’t.*
A bitter laugh escaped my mouth.
“A good man.””
Mrs. Collins looked at me.
“What?””
I shook my head.
“Nothing.””
I kept reading.
*At first, I hated you.*
That sentence almost made sense.
Because if I were him, maybe I would have hated me too.
*I hated that another man would hear her call him dad. I hated that another man would teach her things I missed.*
My chest tightened.
Then the next line changed everything.
*But then I saw you with her.*
I stopped.
*I saw you at the park. She fell off her bike and scraped her knee. You looked more scared than she did. You carried her home like she weighed nothing.*
I remembered that day.
Aaliyah had cried for five minutes.
Then she stopped because I started crying.
She told me I was being dramatic.
She was right.
*That was when I realized something painful. You weren’t replacing me. You were doing what I should have done.*
I looked away.
For ten years, I thought Derek was the villain.
Now I didn’t know what he was.
The next sentence was shorter.
And somehow worse.
*But Renee still wouldn’t let me come back.*
I looked at Mrs. Collins.
“She lied to me.””
Mrs. Collins didn’t answer.
Because she knew.
The letter continued.
*Marcus, if Aaliyah grows up believing I didn’t love her, I will have to live with that. But I need you to know the truth.*
My hands went still.
*You were the father she needed.*
I closed my eyes.
That sentence should have made me feel better.
It didn’t.
Because I didn’t want to be the father she needed.
I wanted to be the father she chose.
The door of the coffee shop opened.
A cold breeze came through.
And suddenly, I felt exhausted.
Ten years of memories.
Ten years of questions.
Ten years of believing I understood my own life.
All of it was shifting.
I folded the letter carefully.
“Why now?””
Mrs. Collins looked confused.
“What?””
“Why did this come out now?””
She hesitated.
“Because Derek found out something.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“He found out Renee never told Aaliyah the truth.””
I stood.
“What truth?””
Mrs. Collins whispered:
“That he never abandoned her.””
I walked out of the coffee shop with a letter in my pocket and a thousand questions in my head.
But one question kept getting louder.
If Derek didn’t leave…
Then who made sure Aaliyah believed he did?
That evening, I came home earlier than expected.
Renee was in the kitchen.
She froze when she saw my face.
She knew.
Somehow, she knew.
“You found it.””
I placed the letter on the counter.
“You knew.””
Her eyes filled immediately.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
That made her look more afraid.
“I want the truth.””
She sat down.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She looked down.
I laughed.
“After graduation?””
She said nothing.
“After Aaliyah left for college?””
Silence.
“After I spent another ten years believing something that wasn’t true?””
“Marcus, I was trying to protect her.””
I stared at her.
“From what?””
She wiped her cheek.
“From being disappointed.””
“By her own father?””
“Yes.””
“And you decided to do that by lying?””
“It wasn’t that simple.””
“It never is, is it?””
She looked up.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
Her voice broke.
“Of losing her.””
I stepped back.
“What does that mean?””
Renee covered her face.
“When Derek came back after months away, Aaliyah was already attached to you. She trusted you. She loved you.””
“Good.””
“But I was terrified that if Derek came back, everything would fall apart.””
I stared.
“So you erased him.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
My voice rose.
“You erased him. Then you let me become the replacement.””
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
I pointed at the letter.
“You let me raise someone who was always searching for another father.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You were her father.””
“Was I?””
That question hurt both of us.
Because neither of us knew the answer anymore.
Then Renee said something that made me completely still.
“Marcus…”
“What?””
“There’s something else.””
I looked at her.
“What else could there possibly be?””
She reached for the letter.
But she didn’t touch it.
She just stared.
“Derek didn’t come back because of graduation.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Then why?””
May you like
She whispered:
“Because he found out Aaliyah isn’t his biological daughter.””
