Chapter 5: The Truth About Aaliyah

The room went silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

The kind of silence that makes you hear your own heartbeat.

I stared at Renee.

Waiting for her to laugh.

Waiting for her to say it was some horrible misunderstanding.

She didn’t.

“You’re lying.””

The words came out automatically.

Renee shook her head.

“I wish I was.””

I stepped away from the counter.

“No.””

“Marcus…”

“No.””

I pointed at the letter.

“I just found out you lied about Derek leaving. Now you’re telling me he isn’t her father?””

Her eyes filled.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

“You had ten years.””

“I know.””

“You had ten years!””

My voice echoed through the house.

The same house where Aaliyah used to dance in the living room.

The same house where we celebrated birthdays.

The same house where I thought we were safe.

Renee cried quietly.

“Derek knows.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He found out last month.””

“How?””

She looked away.

“Ancestry test.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Aaliyah did one?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Renee didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Derek.””

She nodded.

I sat down slowly.

Because suddenly standing felt impossible.

The man I thought abandoned his daughter.

The man Aaliyah defended.

The man she ran to.

He had discovered he might not even be her father.

And he still came back.

Why?

“Who is her biological father?””

Renee closed her eyes.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“You don’t know?””

“It was complicated.””

I laughed.

A painful laugh.

“Everything is complicated with you.””

She flinched.

The next morning, I went to see Derek.

I didn’t plan it.

I just drove.

Sometimes anger moves faster than thought.

He was sitting outside a small apartment building when I arrived.

He looked surprised.

“Marcus.””

I walked toward him.

“You knew.””

His face changed.

“I assume Renee told you.””

“She told me enough.””

Derek looked away.

“Then you know.””

“No.””

I stopped in front of him.

“I know nothing.””

That got his attention.

“I know you disappeared.””

His jaw tightened.

“I didn’t.””

“I know you missed birthdays.””

“I know.””

“I know Aaliyah spent years wondering why you didn’t love her.””

His eyes lowered.

“That part is true.””

“And now I find out you came back after learning she might not even be yours?””

He looked at me.

For the first time, I saw something unexpected.

Pain.

Not anger.

Not jealousy.

Pain.

“You think I came back because of a test?””

“Why else?””

He looked down.

“Because she’s still my daughter.””

I stared.

“But she may not be.””

He nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“And that doesn’t bother you?””

“It destroys me.””

The honesty stopped me.

Derek leaned back.

“When I saw those results, I thought my whole life was a lie.””

I didn’t speak.

“But then I realized something.””

“What?””

“I remembered the first time she called me Dad.””

His voice cracked.

“She was four years old. She had a fever. She was half asleep. She grabbed my hand and said, ‘Daddy, don’t go.’”

He swallowed.

“That little girl didn’t know DNA.””

I looked away.

“She just knew who she loved.””

The words hit me.

Because I had thought the same thing.

Aaliyah didn’t know titles.

She knew people.

She knew who showed up.

Derek looked at me.

“You hate me.””

I didn’t answer.

“I understand.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t hate you.””

He seemed surprised.

“I hate that I don’t know what’s real anymore.””

Neither of us spoke.

Then he asked:

“Did she tell you?””

“Tell me what?””

“That she knew.””

I froze.

“Knew what?””

Derek looked confused.

Then worried.

“Aaliyah knows she may not be my biological daughter.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What?””

“She found out before I did.””

“When?””

He looked at me.

“Three years ago.””

Three years.

Three years.

I thought about all the conversations.

All the moments.

All the times Aaliyah looked distant.

All the times I thought she was just growing up.

“She knew?””

Derek nodded.

“And she still pushed you away?””

I looked toward the road.

Because suddenly, the graduation wasn’t about Derek.

It wasn’t about me.

It was about a girl who had been carrying a secret alone.

Aaliyah had spent three years knowing the foundation of her identity was cracked.

And instead of asking for help…

She built walls.

My phone rang.

Renee.

I almost ignored it.

But I answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Marcus.””

“What?””

“There’s something wrong.””

My grip tightened.

“What happened?””

“Aaliyah left.””

My heart dropped.

“Left where?””

“She took a bag.””

“Where did she go?””

A pause.

Then Renee whispered:

“She said she was going to find her real father.””

I looked at Derek.

He looked back at me.

And neither of us knew what that meant.

May you like

Because the biggest secret in Aaliyah’s life wasn’t who her father was.

It was who she believed had abandoned her.
