Chapter 8: The Daughter Nobody Knew
The voice came from the darkness beyond the room.
A small voice.
A child’s voice.
“Mom?””
Emily froze.
For a moment, nobody breathed.
The detective’s hand immediately moved toward his weapon.
“Everyone stay behind me.””
But Emily didn’t listen.
She stepped forward.
Slowly.
Like she was afraid that one wrong movement would make the voice disappear.
“Hello?””
Her voice cracked.
“Who’s there?””
No answer.
Then—
A soft footstep.
Another.
A figure appeared at the end of the underground hallway.
A girl.
She looked about sixteen.
The same age as Lily.
The same height.
The same dark hair.
The same eyes.
Emily’s knees almost gave out.
“No…”
The girl stared at her.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Mom?””
Emily covered her mouth.
I watched her face.
A thousand emotions passed through it at once.
Shock.
Fear.
Confusion.
Love.
Pain.
The girl took one step closer.
“I knew you would come back.””
Emily shook her head.
“I don’t understand.””
The girl looked hurt.
“You don’t remember me.””
The words broke something inside Emily.
“I’m sorry.””
Her voice trembled.
“I’m so sorry, but I don’t know who you are.””
The girl looked down.
“My name is Ava.””
The room went silent.
Detective Brooks looked at Emily.
“Mrs. Hayes?””
Emily didn’t answer.
She couldn’t.
Because the girl standing in front of her had Emily’s eyes.
And there was only one explanation.
The photograph.
The note.
The impossible truth.
Emily had another daughter.
Ava sat in the hospital after the police brought her there.
She refused to let go of Emily’s hand.
Neither of them spoke much.
They just sat together.
Two people who should have known each other their entire lives.
But didn’t.
I stood near the window, watching them.
It was painful.
Because Emily had spent sixteen years believing she had one child.
And Ava had spent sixteen years believing her mother had forgotten her.
Detective Brooks entered quietly.
“We confirmed her identity.””
Emily looked up.
“And?””
“She is your biological daughter.””
Emily closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“How?””
The detective sat down.
“We’re still investigating.””
Ava looked at him.
“Tell her.””
Everyone looked at the girl.
“What?”” Emily asked.
Ava squeezed her hand.
“Tell her what they did.””
The detective frowned.
“You know?””
Ava nodded.
“I remember.””
The room became still.
“How much?”” he asked.
Ava looked at the floor.
“Everything.””
Ava’s story began sixteen years earlier.
Before Emily married Daniel.
Before Lily was born.
Before everything became complicated.
Emily had given birth to twin girls.
Ava and Lily.
But shortly after their birth, Emily was told one of them had died.
Ava.
There had been a medical complication.
A paperwork mistake.
A tragedy.
That was what everyone told her.
Emily covered her mouth.
“No…”
Ava looked at her.
“They lied.””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became desperate.
“No, I would remember.””
Ava looked down.
“I was three days old when they took me.””
The words hit harder than any accusation.
“Who?””
Ava’s eyes moved toward the door.
“Grandma Patricia.””
Emily went completely still.
“No.””
Ava nodded.
“She said my father’s family needed me.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“She said I was valuable.””
The room went cold.
Detective Brooks leaned forward.
“Valuable because of the inheritance?””
Ava nodded.
“Grandpa’s company.””
Emily looked sick.
“They knew.””
“Yes.””
Ava’s voice was quiet.
“They knew the shares would be divided between both children.””
I understood.
Lily wasn’t just a problem.
Ava was the missing piece.
If one daughter disappeared, everything went to the other.
If both daughters were controlled…
They controlled everything.
Emily refused to leave Ava’s side.
Not even when the doctors told her she needed rest.
“I lost sixteen years.””
She looked at Ava.
“I’m not losing another minute.””
Ava cried.
Not loudly.
Just silently.
Like she had been holding those tears for years.
I stepped out of the room to give them privacy.
Detective Brooks followed.
“Nia.””
I turned.
“What?””
“There’s something else.””
I already knew.
There was always something else.
“What?””
He handed me a file.
“Dr. Reed’s records.””
I opened it.
Inside were notes from years ago.
Patient information.
Financial transfers.
Photographs.
Then I saw a name.
Claire Bennett.
I looked at him.
“She was involved from the beginning.””
He nodded.
“Not just recently.””
“How?””
“She was Patricia’s assistant.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“Before she became Emily’s friend.””
I remembered Claire’s kindness.
The coffee.
The hugs.
The endless support.
All of it.
A performance.
“She got close to Emily on purpose.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The detective looked serious.
“To watch her.””
When we returned to Emily’s room, Ava was sleeping.
Emily sat beside her.
Holding her hand.
“I hate myself.””
I immediately shook my head.
“Don’t.””
“I spent years missing my own daughter.””
Her voice cracked.
“Because I trusted the wrong people.””
“You didn’t know.””
“But I should have.””
I sat beside her.
“Emily.””
She looked at me.
“You survived something nobody should survive.””
I pointed toward Ava.
“And now she found you.””
Emily looked at her daughter.
Then whispered:
“I want to know everything.””
The next day, Ava told us the truth.
She had grown up under Patricia’s control.
Not as a granddaughter.
As an asset.
A word that made Emily cry.
“They never called me their family,” Ava said.
“What did they call you?””
Ava looked away.
“The backup.””
Emily’s face broke.
“The backup?””
Ava nodded.
“They said Lily was the public daughter.””
She swallowed.
“And I was the secret.””
The detective wrote everything down.
“Who raised you?””
“A woman named Rachel.””
“Who is she?””
“I don’t know.””
“Where is she now?””
Ava hesitated.
“She disappeared.””
“When?””
“Two months ago.””
Emily frowned.
“Two months?””
Ava nodded.
“That’s when everything started.””
“What started?””
Ava looked at her.
“Patricia became afraid.””
“Of what?””
“You.””
Emily stared.
“Why?””
Ava reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this in Rachel’s room after she disappeared.””
She handed it to Emily.
Emily opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Emily.
Taken years earlier.
On the back was a message.
Emily read it silently.
Then her face changed.
“What?””
She handed it to me.
My heart stopped.
The message said:
*“The first daughter was hidden. The second daughter was protected. But the mother was always the final target.””*
I looked at Emily.
“What does this mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she was staring at the photograph.
At the person standing beside her.
A person we hadn’t noticed before.
A person whose face had been cut out.
Detective Brooks looked closer.
Then suddenly grabbed the picture.
“Wait.””
“What?””
He turned it over.
“There’s something written underneath.””
A name.
A name that made Emily stand up.
Because she recognized it.
The name belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
Someone who had been buried years ago.
Someone whose death had started everything.
Emily whispered:
“Michael.””
Her first husband.
Ava and Lily’s biological father.
Detective Brooks looked confused.
“Your husband?””
“He died sixteen years ago.””
Emily stared at the picture.
But there was one problem.
The photograph was dated after his death.
May you like
And on the back, beneath his name, were five words.
*“He knows the entire truth.””*
