Amused

Chapter 5: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

Claire stood at the end of the hospital hallway with the same gentle smile she had worn at Emily’s wedding.

The same smile she used when she brought birthday gifts.

The same smile she used when she told me, “You’re the only person who really understands Emily.””

Now that smile looked completely different.

Like a mask that had finally slipped.

Emily stepped out of the room behind me.

The moment she saw Claire, she stopped breathing.

“Claire…”

Her voice cracked.

Claire’s expression softened.

“Oh, Emily.””

She walked closer.

“I’m so glad you’re awake.””

I stared at her.

“You were in my room.””

Claire stopped.

The smile faded slightly.

“What?””

“You were inside Emily’s hospital room.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I saw you.””

Claire looked at Emily.

Then back at me.

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“I think you’re confused.””

That sentence.

Those exact words.

Everyone who wanted to ignore me had said some version of them.

You’re emotional.

You’re confused.

You’re making a scene.

But I wasn’t confused.

I knew what I saw.

Emily knew too.

“Why were you in here?”” Emily asked.

Claire’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

She wasn’t prepared for that question.

“I came to check on you.””

“Without telling me?””

Claire looked hurt.

“Emily, after everything that happened, you think I wouldn’t come?””

Emily stared at her.

“You knew about Daniel.””

The hallway became silent.

Claire blinked.

“What?””

“You knew something was wrong.””

Claire’s mouth opened.

Then closed.

I watched her carefully.

Because lies had a rhythm.

People who told the truth usually answered immediately.

People who built lies needed time to choose the safest version.

“I knew you and Daniel had problems,” Claire finally said.

Emily laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“Problems?””

Claire stepped closer.

“Emily, you have to understand. I was trying to help.””

“Help who?””

Claire’s face hardened.

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Turn everyone against you because you’re angry.””

That was when I knew.

Emily knew too.

The real Claire was showing.

The kind person disappeared whenever she wasn’t in control.

Detective Brooks arrived before the argument could continue.

He had returned to the hospital after my call.

When he saw Claire, his expression became serious.

“Ms. Claire Bennett?””

Claire looked at him.

“Yes?””

“I need you to answer a few questions.””

“About what?””

“Your presence here tonight.””

Claire smiled politely.

“Of course.””

The confidence returned.

Perfect.

Controlled.

But I noticed something.

Her hands were shaking.

The police questioned Claire in a small waiting room near the emergency department.

Emily sat beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

For several minutes, we just listened to the hospital sounds around us.

Machines beeping.

Doctors walking quickly.

Families whispering.

Life continuing.

Finally, Emily spoke.

“I loved her.””

I looked at her.

“Claire?””

She nodded.

“She was my first real friend after college.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She was there when I married Daniel. She was there when Lily was born.””

She looked down.

“I trusted her more than my own family.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because betrayal hurt differently when it came from someone close.

Enemies could hurt you.

But friends knew where to aim.

“What happened before all this?”” I asked.

Emily took a deep breath.

“Claire knew about Daniel’s financial problems.””

“Why?””

“Because she helped him.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Emily looked ashamed.

“She was the one who introduced him to Dr. Reed.””

The pieces started connecting.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

Emily shook her head.

“But Claire always said Dr. Reed was brilliant. She said he could help Daniel manage stress.””

My stomach tightened.

Manage stress.

That was how it started.

Small things.

Normal words.

Nothing that sounded dangerous.

Until suddenly you were trapped.

“What else did she know?””

Emily looked toward the interrogation room.

“Everything.””

Detective Brooks returned forty minutes later.

His expression told us enough.

Claire had not been arrested.

But something had changed.

“What did she say?”” Emily asked.

The detective sat down.

“She admitted entering your hospital room.””

Emily stiffened.

“Why?””

“She said she was looking for your insurance documents.””

I almost laughed.

“Insurance documents?””

The detective looked at me.

“I know.””

“Did she expect anyone to believe that?””

“She claims she was worried about your medical expenses.””

Emily looked away.

“She’s lying.””

The detective didn’t argue.

“What concerns me is what else she admitted.””

“What?””

“She knew about your medication change.””

Emily went completely still.

“How?””

The detective opened his notebook.

“According to her statement, you told her.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“I never told her.””

The detective looked between us.

“She also knew you were planning to confront Daniel the night you disappeared.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Emily.

“Did you tell her?””

“No.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“I only told Daniel.””

That was the moment everything became clear.

Claire wasn’t just involved.

She had access to information nobody else had.

Information that came directly from the person they were trying to silence.

That night, Emily asked me to stay.

Not because she was helpless.

Because she was afraid of being alone.

I understood.

At midnight, the hospital became quiet.

I sat in the chair beside her bed, staring at the floor.

Emily was asleep.

Or at least I thought she was.

Then she whispered:

“Nia.””

I looked up.

“You awake?””

Her eyes opened.

“Yes.””

She stared at the ceiling.

“I remembered something.””

I leaned forward.

“What?””

“The night I disappeared.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What happened?””

Emily closed her eyes.

“I woke up before they thought I would.””

“Where were you?””

“A room.””

“What room?””

“I don’t know.””

She swallowed.

“But I heard voices.””

“Whose?””

“Daniel’s.””

I waited.

“And Claire’s.””

The name felt like a punch.

“What were they saying?””

Emily’s breathing changed.

She was back there.

Reliving it.

“Daniel said the medication should have worked.””

I felt cold.

“Then Claire said…”

Emily opened her eyes.

Her voice dropped.

“She said, ‘If she wakes up, we’ll have to finish it ourselves.’”

The monitor beside her began beeping faster.

I grabbed her hand.

“Emily.””

She took a shaky breath.

“There’s more.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Before I lost consciousness…”

She squeezed my fingers.

“I heard someone crying.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

Her eyes moved toward the window.

“But it wasn’t me.””

The next morning, Detective Brooks called.

There had been a breakthrough.

Not good news.

A discovery.

He asked us to meet him at the police station.

When we arrived, he placed a photograph on the table.

A security camera image.

A woman entering Emily’s house.

The night before the funeral.

The image was blurry.

But the face was clear enough.

Claire.

Emily stared at it.

“No…”

Detective Brooks slid another photo forward.

This one showed Claire leaving.

Carrying a small box.

A box.

I remembered.

The missing memory box from Lily’s room.

Emily covered her mouth.

“She took it.””

“Yes,” Detective Brooks said.

“Why?””

The detective hesitated.

“Because we found out what was inside.””

He opened a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

And a handwritten letter.

Emily looked at the first page.

Then she froze.

“What?””

She pushed the paper toward me.

I read the first line.

And my entire body went cold.

Because the letter wasn’t written by Daniel.

It wasn’t written by Claire.

It was written by Emily.

But the date on it was from three days after she was declared dead.

And the final sentence said:

*“If you are reading this, it means they failed to bury my secret with me.””*
