Amused

Chapter 7: The Child They Tried to Hide

For a moment, I thought I had heard him wrong.

The police station was silent except for the low hum of the lights above us.

My eyes moved from Detective Brooks to Emily.

Then back again.

“Lily?””

Emily’s voice was barely there.

“My daughter?””

Detective Brooks nodded slowly.

“That’s what Daniel claims.””

Emily stood so quickly that the chair scraped against the floor.

“No.””

The detective remained calm.

“Mrs. Hayes—”

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“That’s not possible.””

I had never seen Emily look like that.

Not afraid.

Not angry.

Broken.

Because there were some fears bigger than death.

The fear of losing your child was one of them.

“What did Daniel say?”” Emily asked.

Detective Brooks opened his folder.

“He says the financial problems weren’t the real reason.””

“What was?””

“He claims he discovered something about Lily’s past.””

Emily stared at him.

“Lily is sixteen.””

“I know.””

“She has no connection to any of this.””

The detective looked down at his notes.

“According to Daniel, someone believed she did.””

A cold feeling moved through the room.

“Who?”” I asked.

The detective didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more.

Finally, he said:

“Dr. Samuel Reed.””

Emily covered her mouth.

“No.””

“He was involved before your disappearance,” Detective Brooks continued.

“We believe he was helping Daniel and Patricia obtain information.””

“What information?””

“We don’t know yet.””

Emily shook her head.

“This makes no sense.””

I looked at her.

“Emily, what does Lily know?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Nothing.””

The answer came too fast.

Almost too fast.

I noticed.

So did Detective Brooks.

“Mrs. Hayes.””

Emily looked away.

“What?””

“Are you certain?””

She didn’t respond.

The silence was enough.

We drove back to Emily’s house under police escort.

The entire way, she stared out the window.

I sat beside her.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, I asked:

“Emily.””

She turned slightly.

“What?””

“Is there something about Lily you haven’t told us?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect her.””

“From what?””

She looked down.

“From the truth.””

The words stayed between us.

I waited.

Because I knew Emily.

She didn’t hide things because she wanted control.

She hid things because she thought she could carry the pain alone.

After a few minutes, she whispered:

“Lily isn’t Daniel’s biological daughter.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She doesn’t know.””

Detective Brooks, sitting in the front seat, turned around.

“She doesn’t know?””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

“Who is her biological father?””

Emily closed her eyes.

“That’s complicated.””

“Mrs. Hayes, we need to understand.””

She looked at her hands.

“Before I met Daniel, I was married.””

I listened carefully.

“His name was Michael.””

Her voice softened.

“He died before Lily was born.””

I frowned.

“Then…”

Emily nodded.

“Lily is Michael’s daughter.””

“So why would Daniel care?””

Emily looked toward the window.

“Because Michael left something behind.””

“What?””

“A company.””

The detective immediately became more alert.

“A company?””

“Yes.””

Emily swallowed.

“Michael built a technology company before he died. After his death, Lily became the beneficiary of his shares.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“How much?””

Emily looked at me.

“Enough that people would do terrible things.””

The car became silent.

Suddenly everything looked different.

The money.

The documents.

The secrets.

The fear.

They weren’t trying to destroy Emily because of her.

They were trying to reach Lily.

When we arrived at the house, Detective Brooks searched every room.

Emily went upstairs.

I followed.

She stopped outside Lily’s bedroom.

For a moment, she didn’t open the door.

“She’s always hated this room.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“She said it felt strange.””

A chill went through me.

“Strange how?””

“Like someone had been inside.””

I stared at the door.

“Did you believe her?””

Emily looked ashamed.

“No.””

She opened it slowly.

The room was untouched.

Almost.

The bed was made.

The books were arranged.

The stuffed rabbit sat perfectly on the pillow.

Then Emily noticed something.

She walked toward the desk.

A photograph was missing.

“What?””

She picked up the empty frame.

“What was here?””

“My wedding photo.””

I frowned.

“Why would someone take that?””

Emily looked at the empty frame.

“Because Lily hated it.””

“Why?””

“She said something was wrong with it.””

I looked at the frame.

“What do you mean?””

Emily’s face changed.

“She told me there was someone in the background.””

I felt cold.

“What?””

“I thought she was imagining things.””

She looked at me.

“I was wrong.””

Detective Brooks found something inside Lily’s closet.

A small hidden camera.

It was disguised as a smoke detector.

Emily nearly collapsed.

“No.””

The detective carefully removed it.

“How long has this been here?””

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I looked around the room.

Someone had been watching Lily.

For how long?

Days?

Months?

Years?

The thought made my skin crawl.

“Can you access the footage?”” I asked.

The detective nodded.

“We’ll send it to forensics.””

Then his phone rang.

He stepped away to answer.

When he returned, his expression was serious.

“What happened?””

He looked at Emily.

“Daniel gave us more information.””

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Now he wants to talk?””

“He says he knows where Dr. Reed is.””

Everyone became still.

“Where?””

Detective Brooks looked at his notes.

“An old private clinic outside the city.””

Emily’s face went pale.

“What?””

“He says that’s where they kept you.””

The room froze.

“The underground room?”” I asked.

The detective nodded.

“According to Daniel.””

Emily looked toward the stairs.

“I need to go there.””

“No,” Detective Brooks said immediately.

Emily turned.

“My daughter is involved.””

“We don’t know that.””

“Yes, we do.””

Her voice shook.

“Someone watched her. Someone took her records. Someone tried to erase my family.””

She looked at him.

“I’m going.””

The detective studied her.

Then sighed.

“You’re not going alone.””

The abandoned clinic sat at the edge of town.

It had been closed for years.

The building looked forgotten.

Broken windows.

Overgrown grass.

A rusted sign hanging above the entrance.

Dr. Reed’s name was barely visible.

Emily stood outside.

Her face had gone pale.

“This is it.””

Detective Brooks looked at her.

“You’re sure?””

She nodded.

“The smell.””

She swallowed.

“The bleach.””

Police entered first.

The rest of us followed.

The inside was worse than I imagined.

Empty rooms.

Old equipment.

Dust covering everything.

Then we found the stairs.

They led underground.

Emily stopped.

Her hands started shaking.

“I was down there.””

I reached for her arm.

“You don’t have to go.””

She looked at me.

“Yes, I do.””

We walked down.

At the bottom was a small room.

A bed.

A table.

A chair.

And a camera mounted in the corner.

Emily covered her mouth.

“This is where they kept me.””

Detective Brooks searched the room.

Then he found something.

A file.

He opened it.

Inside were medical records.

Photos.

Notes.

He read silently.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

He handed the file to Emily.

She read the first page.

And immediately dropped it.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

Her eyes were filled with horror.

“Lily was here.””

My heart stopped.

“How?””

Emily pointed at the page.

There was a date.

A patient name.

And a signature.

The signature belonged to Dr. Reed.

But the patient name wasn’t Lily.

It was someone else.

Someone connected to Lily.

Someone we never expected.

Detective Brooks picked up the document.

Then he whispered:

“This isn’t about money.””

I looked at him.

“What is it about?””

He turned the page.

And there it was.

A photograph.

A photograph of a little girl.

A little girl who looked exactly like Lily.

Underneath it was a handwritten note.

*“Subject confirmed. The inheritance is only one part of the plan.””*

Emily stared at the picture.

Then whispered the words that made all of us freeze.

“That’s not Lily.””

I looked closer.

The child in the photograph had Lily’s face.

Her eyes.

Her smile.

Everything.

Emily’s voice shook.

“Because Lily has a twin sister.””

And then, from somewhere deeper inside the abandoned clinic…

May you like

A child’s voice called out.

“Mom?””
