Amused

Chapter 9: The Final Secret

The crying came from beneath us.

Not from the walls.

Not from another room.

From under the floor.

Again.

The same sound.

The same horror.

A child trapped somewhere below.

Officer Harris looked at me.

“Stay here.””

I almost laughed.

After everything?

After fourteen months?

After finding Leo under a floor?

There was no universe where I stayed still.

I grabbed the metal chair beside me and smashed it against the floorboards.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The wood cracked.

A hidden door appeared beneath the carpet.

A staircase.

Leading down.

Officer Harris stared.

“He built another level.””

I looked into the darkness.

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“He built three.””

The basement below was larger than I expected.

Much larger.

Rooms connected by narrow hallways.

Each door had a name.

Each door had a child’s name.

My stomach twisted.

This wasn’t a hiding place.

It was a collection.

A collection of stolen lives.

The crying grew louder.

I followed it.

At the end of the hallway was a small room.

The door was locked.

A name was carved into it.

MAYA.

My entire body went cold.

I hit the door.

“Maya!””

A tiny voice answered.

“Daddy!””

I nearly collapsed.

“I’m here.””

“Daddy, hurry!””

Officer Harris broke the lock.

The door opened.

Maya ran into my arms.

I held her so tightly she complained she couldn’t breathe.

But I didn’t let go.

Not yet.

Not after losing Leo once.

Not after almost losing her.

“Are you hurt?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Where is Ethan?””

Her face changed.

“He left.””

“Why?””

She looked behind me.

“He said you would come.””

A sound echoed from the hallway.

Clapping.

Slow.

Deliberate.

We turned.

Ethan stood at the end of the corridor.

Gray hair.

Calm expression.

The same smile from the video.

“Good.””

Officer Harris raised his weapon.

“Don’t move.””

Ethan looked amused.

“You still think this ends with a gun.””

“You’re under arrest.””

Ethan ignored him.

He looked at me.

“Daniel.””

I stepped in front of Maya.

“What?””

“You finally see it.””

“See what?””

“That families are built on secrets.””

I stared at him.

“You kidnapped children.””

“I corrected mistakes.””

“People aren’t mistakes.””

His expression changed.

For the first time, anger appeared.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I understand perfectly.””

“You had everything.””

His voice rose.

“A family. Parents. A normal childhood.””

I froze.

“What?””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You think I was born this way?””

I said nothing.

He continued.

“Our parents buried me.””

The words echoed.

“They locked me away before I ever locked anyone else away.””

Elena’s voice came from behind me.

“Ethan.””

I turned.

She stood at the top of the stairs.

Police officers surrounded her.

Ethan looked at her.

“You always did love playing the victim.””

Elena’s face hardened.

“You hurt children.””

“I saved them.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You became exactly what you hated.””

For a moment, Ethan looked wounded.

Just for a second.

Then it disappeared.

“You never understood me.””

Elena stepped closer.

“I understood you better than anyone.””

Silence.

Then Ethan smiled.

“And that’s why you helped me.””

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Elena.

“What?””

She froze.

“No.””

Ethan laughed.

“You never told him.””

I stared at my sister.

“Told me what?””

Elena’s face broke.

“Daniel…”

“What did you do?””

She couldn’t answer.

Ethan stepped closer.

“She wasn’t just protecting Leo from me.””

My heart pounded.

“She was protecting Leo from the truth.””

I looked at Elena.

“What truth?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

She whispered:

“The night Leo disappeared…”

A long silence.

Then:

“I was the one who brought him to Ethan.””

The world stopped.

I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the police.

Not Maya.

Not Ethan.

Only those words.

My sister.

The person who had helped me search.

The person who cried with me.

The person who claimed she was saving my son.

Had brought him there.

I stepped back.

“No.””

Elena cried.

“Daniel, listen—”

“No.””

Ethan smiled.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at my sister.

My voice broke.

“Why?””

She covered her face.

“Because I thought I could stop him.””

The lights flickered.

And somewhere behind us…

A hidden door opened.

A voice whispered from the darkness:

“Dad?””

I turned.

Another child stood there.

A child I had never seen.

But she looked exactly like me.

Same eyes.

Same face.

Same scar above the eyebrow.

My entire body went cold.

Because the little girl looked at me and said:

“Mom told me you would come find me.””

I looked at Elena.

She was crying.

And whispering:

“I’m sorry.””

Because the child standing in front of me…

May you like

was my daughter.

The daughter I never knew existed.
