Chapter 2: The Room Elena Hid
I forgot how to breathe.
For fourteen months, I had imagined every possible way I might find my son.
A phone call.
A police officer at my door.
A stranger recognizing him.
A miracle.
Never this.
Never a tiny hand reaching from beneath my sister’s floor.
“Leo?””
My voice barely came out.
The hand tightened around my wrist.
“Dad…”
I dropped the fire stoker.
It crashed against the floor beside me.
“Maya, call 911!”” I shouted.
My daughter ran toward the kitchen.
Elena didn’t move.
She was still on the floor, staring at the opening.
Her face looked like someone had drained every bit of life from it.
“You knew,” I said.
She looked at me.
“Daniel…”
“You knew he was here.””
She started crying harder.
“I thought he was dead.””
My entire body went cold.
“What did you say?””
Before she could answer, I grabbed the broken boards and pulled them apart.
The opening was bigger now.
Beneath the floor was a narrow space between the foundation beams.
Not a basement.
Not a storage area.
A hidden space.
Someone had built walls inside it.
Someone had created a room.
My son was trapped inside a room beneath the house.
I climbed down without thinking.
The dirt floor was freezing beneath my knees.
The darkness swallowed me.
“Leo!””
A weak cough answered.
“Dad…”
I followed the sound.
My flashlight shook in my hand.
Then I saw him.
A small figure curled against the wall.
A child.
My child.
His hair was longer.
His face was thinner.
His clothes were torn and covered in dirt.
But his eyes were the same.
Those same brown eyes that used to look up at me when he asked questions about dinosaurs and outer space.
“Leo.””
I reached him.
He immediately grabbed onto me.
I pulled him against my chest.
He felt so light.
Too light.
Like I was holding a memory instead of my son.
“I knew you’d come,” he whispered.
I buried my face in his hair.
“I’m sorry.””
The words broke out of me.
“I’m so sorry.””
He shook his head weakly.
“It wasn’t your fault.””
I looked at him.
“How long have you been here?””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
“Leo.””
He looked toward the opening above us.
Toward Elena.
“She said she was protecting me.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
He looked confused.
“Your sister.””
I felt something inside me break.
I turned upward.
“Elena!””
She looked down.
Her face was covered in tears.
“Tell me the truth.””
She closed her eyes.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me what happened.””
The sirens were getting closer outside.
Elena knew time was running out.
She climbed down slowly into the hidden room.
The same woman who had hosted family dinners.
The same woman who had held Maya as a baby.
The same woman who had cried beside me when Leo disappeared.
Now she stood in the darkness beneath her own home.
“I found him.””
My hands tightened around Leo.
“What?””
“The night he disappeared.””
The words felt impossible.
“You found him?””
She nodded.
“He was scared.””
Leo buried his face against my shoulder.
Elena continued.
“I saw him near the old road behind my property. He was crying. He said someone was following him.””
“Who?””
She looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
Her voice cracked.
“I panicked.””
I stared at her.
“You panicked, so you locked my seven-year-old son underground?””
“No!””
Her scream echoed through the small space.
“No, Daniel. It wasn’t supposed to be like this.””
Leo flinched.
I held him tighter.
“What happened?””
Elena wiped her face.
“I brought him here because I thought someone was looking for him.””
“You thought?””
“Yes!””
She grabbed her own hair.
“I thought if people believed he was gone, whoever took him would stop searching.””
I stared at her.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
She looked at Leo.
“I know that now.””
The police arrived upstairs.
Voices filled the house.
“Police! Call out!””
Leo whispered something.
I leaned closer.
“What?””
“He wasn’t alone.””
The room went silent.
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
Leo’s fingers gripped my shirt.
“There was another person.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
He looked terrified.
“The person Elena was scared of.””
Elena’s face changed.
“Leo, don’t.””
I turned toward her.
“Don’t what?””
She stepped back.
“Don’t listen to him.””
A terrible feeling settled in my stomach.
Because she wasn’t denying it.
She was afraid.
Not of me.
Not of the police.
Of someone else.
The officers reached the opening above us.
They helped pull Leo out first.
Paramedics wrapped him in a blanket.
I climbed out after him.
Elena stayed below.
The police surrounded her.
One officer asked, “Ma’am, are there any other hidden areas in this house?””
Elena looked at the floor.
Then at me.
Then at Leo.
Her lips trembled.
“Yes.””
Everyone froze.
The officer stepped closer.
“Where?””
Elena pointed toward the wall.
“There’s another room.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
May you like
She whispered:
“The room where he was kept before I moved him here.””
