Amused

Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Walls

The hospital room smelled like antiseptic and old fear.

I sat beside Leo’s bed for three days without leaving.

Doctors said he was dehydrated, underweight, and traumatized.

They used careful words.

Words that professionals use when they don’t want to say what everyone already knows.

A child had suffered.

My child had suffered.

And the person who had caused it was my own sister.

But the strangest part was this:

Leo wasn’t angry at Elena.

He was scared of her.

There was a difference.

Anger comes from feeling hurt.

Fear comes from knowing something is still dangerous.

On the fourth morning, I sat beside his bed while he colored with a box of crayons the nurses had brought him.

He drew a house.

A small house.

A person standing outside.

And a dark square beneath it.

“Leo,” I said gently, “can I ask you something?””

He kept coloring.

“Okay.””

“Why didn’t you try to escape?””

His crayon stopped.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then:

“I did.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened?””

He looked at the drawing.

“She caught me.””

“Who?””

He looked toward the door.

Like he was checking if anyone was listening.

“Not Aunt Elena.””

I leaned forward.

“Then who?””

His hand began shaking.

“The man who came at night.””

A cold wave moved through me.

“What man?””

Leo swallowed.

“He told Aunt Elena that if she didn’t hide me, he would take me somewhere I’d never come back from.””

I felt sick.

“Did you see his face?””

Leo nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who was he?””

He looked at me.

And whispered a name.

A name I hadn’t heard in fourteen months.

A name connected to the night my son disappeared.

I stood up so quickly the chair fell backward.

“Leo, say it again.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“He said his name was Marcus.””

I froze.

Marcus.

My old business partner.

The man who had vanished from town three days after Leo disappeared.

The man police questioned but never charged.

The man who had told everyone he was moving away because he “needed a fresh start.””

I grabbed my phone.

I searched through old messages.

There were hundreds.

But one stood out.

A message from Marcus sent the week before Leo vanished.

Daniel.

We need to talk about the company.

It’s bigger than you think.

At the time, I thought it was about money.

A business dispute.

A disagreement.

I never imagined it was about my son.

That afternoon, the police brought Elena in for questioning.

I watched from the other side of the glass.

She looked older.

Broken.

Not like someone who had won.

Like someone who had spent fourteen months losing a battle she refused to admit she was fighting.

When she entered the room, she looked directly at me.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t respond.

She sat down.

“I know you hate me.””

“You kept my son under your floor.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“No explanation changes that.””

“I know.””

The fact that she wasn’t defending herself made it worse.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked down.

“Because Marcus threatened us.””

I leaned forward.

“Us?””

She nodded.

“He knew where Maya went to school.””

My blood turned cold.

“He knew where you lived.””

She wiped her face.

“He said if I told you, Leo wouldn’t be the only child who disappeared.””

I stared at her.

“Why should I believe you?””

“You shouldn’t.””

Her answer surprised me.

She looked through the glass toward me.

“But you need to find him.””

The room felt smaller.

“You’re saying Marcus is still here?””

Elena nodded.

“He came back.””

“When?””

Her lips trembled.

“Last night.””

I stood.

“What?””

“He called me.””

The officer beside her looked up.

“You didn’t mention this before.””

“I was scared.””

I stepped closer to the glass.

“What did he say?””

Elena closed her eyes.

“He said…”

She stopped.

“What?””

“He said the floorboards were opened too soon.””

A chill moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

Elena looked directly at me.

And for the first time since I found her secret, I saw something different in her eyes.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Regret.

“He knew you would find Leo eventually.””

The lights above us flickered.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

And my hands went numb.

There was a photograph attached.

A photograph of my house.

Taken from outside my bedroom window.

May you like

Underneath it were six words:

*You found one child. Find the other.*
