Amused

Chapter 7: The Recording My Grandfather Hid

For seven years, I had slept beside a man who knew my secrets.

But that night, I discovered something worse.

He knew the secrets I didn't know.

The ballroom was no longer a place where Daniel had embarrassed me.

It had become a courtroom.

No judge.

No jury.

Just two hundred witnesses watching the truth slowly tear apart everything we thought we understood.

"The access code belonged to Daniel Mercer.""

Adrian's words echoed through the room.

Daniel looked like someone had physically struck him.

"No.""

It was immediate.

Automatic.

But this time, nobody believed his denial.

I studied his face.

Not because I wanted to catch him lying.

Because I wanted to know if there was still a part of him I recognized.

"Daniel," I said quietly.

He looked at me.

"Did you access my grandfather's archive?""

His mouth opened.

Closed.

Opened again.

"I don't know what he's talking about.""

I almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was familiar.

Daniel always reached for confusion when the truth became dangerous.

"I didn't ask what Adrian was talking about.""

My voice was calm.

"I asked if you accessed it.""

He looked away.

That was the answer.

Thomas stepped forward.

"Daniel, the archive requires a unique authorization sequence.""

Daniel looked at him.

"You think I did this?""

Thomas didn't respond.

"Thomas.""

Still nothing.

Daniel's frustration grew.

"After everything, you're going to believe him over me?""

I looked at Daniel.

That sentence hurt.

Because once, I would have been the person defending him.

I would have said everyone was misunderstanding him.

I would have found a reason.

But I was tired of finding reasons for people who never considered my feelings.

Adrian pulled a small tablet from his briefcase.

"I have the access record.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"That's not possible.""

Adrian looked at him.

"Why?""

Daniel didn't answer.

The room noticed.

Everyone noticed.

Adrian tapped the screen.

"The archive was opened at 8:42 p.m.""

He looked at me.

"Approximately twenty minutes before your husband publicly humiliated you.""

My stomach tightened.

Twenty minutes.

While I was choosing a dress.

While I was walking into the ballroom believing I was attending my husband's greatest achievement.

He was opening my grandfather's private archive.

"Why?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

"I didn't know what it was.""

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

"What did you think it was?""

Silence.

I stepped closer.

"Daniel.""

His shoulders lowered.

"I thought it contained information about the trust.""

There it was.

The truth.

Not all of it.

But enough.

The room reacted.

Someone whispered, "He was investigating her.""

I looked at Daniel.

"You searched my grandfather's private records.""

"I was trying to understand.""

"No.""

My voice became colder.

"You were trying to find something.""

He looked hurt.

"Claire.""

I shook my head.

"Don't.""

Because I couldn't handle another moment where he used my name like it was a bridge back to the person I used to be.

"You spent years studying my family while I was spending years building a life with you.""

Daniel looked down.

For once, he had nothing to say.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

"I can explain.""

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at her.

"You?""

She swallowed.

"Yes.""

I watched carefully.

Because I had learned something important that night.

People revealed the truth when they believed they were losing everything.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

"You weren't supposed to access the archive yourself.""

His face changed.

"What?""

She looked nervous.

"I told them you weren't ready.""

A cold silence filled the room.

I looked at Adrian.

"Who is 'they'?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

"Who?""

She pulled away.

"You think this is all my fault?""

Her voice cracked.

"You came to me.""

The room went still.

"You found me because I worked in corporate intelligence.""

Daniel froze.

Corporate intelligence.

Not just an assistant.

Something else.

"You told me you needed someone close to Claire.""

My chest tightened.

Daniel stared at her.

"I never said that.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"You didn't have to.""

She looked around.

"You were obsessed with finding out why Henry Harlow trusted Claire with everything.""

I felt a wave of anger rise.

Not because I was surprised anymore.

Because every new detail made the old memories feel more painful.

Daniel had not accidentally hurt me.

He had been moving toward this.

Piece by piece.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

"Who hired you?""

She looked at him.

And for the first time, she seemed genuinely afraid.

"I can't say.""

"Can't?""

She shook her head.

"You don't understand.""

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Try me.""

Vanessa looked toward the ballroom doors.

Then lowered her voice.

"He's here.""

Everyone turned.

"Who?""

She didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Because a voice came from the entrance.

"Apparently, I arrived at the wrong time.""

Every person turned.

An older man stood near the doors.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

A walking cane in one hand.

I didn't recognize him.

But Daniel did.

His face went completely pale.

"Father.""

The room shifted.

Daniel's father.

Richard Mercer.

The man whose name had been hidden inside my family's history.

The man connected to Adrian's accusation.

The man who had apparently known the truth long before I did.

Richard walked into the ballroom slowly.

No panic.

No shame.

Only confidence.

The kind of confidence that came from believing he still had control.

"Claire Harlow.""

Hearing my name from him felt wrong.

Like he had no right to say it.

"You look exactly like your grandmother.""

I didn't answer.

Daniel stepped forward.

"What are you doing here?""

Richard glanced at him.

"Cleaning up your mistakes.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"My mistakes?""

Richard ignored him.

His eyes stayed on me.

"I suppose Henry never told you.""

"Told me what?""

Richard smiled sadly.

"The truth about why he hated my family.""

The room became silent.

I looked at Adrian.

He was watching Richard carefully.

Waiting.

"Your father betrayed mine," I said.

Richard laughed softly.

"No.""

The single word changed the atmosphere.

"No?""

Richard stepped closer.

"Your grandfather believed that.""

He looked at Adrian.

"And my son spent his entire life trying to prove otherwise.""

Adrian's expression remained controlled.

"My father was innocent.""

Richard looked at him.

"Your father was many things.""

A pause.

"But innocent?""

He sighed.

"That depends on which part of the story you were told.""

I felt a headache forming.

Too many lies.

Too many versions.

Too many people claiming they were protecting me.

"Why are you here?""

Richard looked at me.

"Because your grandfather left something unfinished.""

"What?""

He smiled.

"The Harlow succession.""

My eyes narrowed.

"I am the Harlow successor.""

Richard shook his head.

"No.""

The word was quiet.

But devastating.

The entire room held its breath.

"Your grandfather wanted you to believe that.""

I felt the ground shift beneath me.

"What are you saying?""

Richard looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

"Your grandfather did not leave the entire Harlow legacy to one person.""

Thomas stepped forward.

"Richard.""

Richard ignored him.

"He divided it.""

My hands went cold.

"Between whom?""

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard answered.

"Between his granddaughter...""

He looked at me.

"And his grandson.""

My eyes moved to Adrian.

The room disappeared.

Because suddenly the stranger who appeared tonight was no longer just a missing relative.

He was my grandfather's hidden heir.

My family.

My equal.

But Richard wasn't finished.

Because he looked directly at me and said:

"And if the final document is real, Claire...""

A pause.

"Adrian Vale is not your biggest threat.""

I stared at him.

"Then who is?""

Richard's eyes moved toward Daniel.

"The person your grandfather feared most.""

Daniel's face changed.

"Stop.""

Richard didn't.

"The person who has spent seven years standing beside you.""

The silence became unbearable.

I looked at my husband.

And Richard said the words I never wanted to hear.

"Your grandfather didn't fear that Daniel would steal your money.""

May you like

He paused.

"He feared Daniel would steal your trust.""
