Chapter 5: The Lie Hidden in Our Marriage
The most terrifying moment of that night was not when Daniel poured champagne over my head.
It wasn't when he announced his affair in front of two hundred executives.
It wasn't even when he tried to have security remove me from a company I secretly controlled.
The most terrifying moment was watching my husband hear a stranger accuse him of knowing a secret buried in my family history.
Because Daniel didn't look confused.
He looked exposed.
And there was a difference.
A confused man asks questions.
An innocent man demands answers.
Daniel did neither.
He simply stood there, staring at Adrian Vale as if he had seen a ghost.
"That's impossible," Daniel finally said.
His voice was low.
Almost a whisper.
Adrian didn't react.
"Is it?""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Who are you?""
Adrian's expression remained calm.
"You already know.""
"No, I don't.""
"Then why did you go silent when I mentioned your father's transfer records?""
The ballroom erupted into whispers again.
Executives who had spent the evening watching my humiliation were now watching Daniel's unraveling.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
"Daniel, say something.""
He pulled away from her.
Not gently.
Not intentionally cruelly.
Just instinctively.
His entire focus was on Adrian.
"I have no idea what you're talking about.""
Adrian tilted his head.
"Interesting.""
"What is?""
"You were very confident when you thought Claire was the only person being investigated tonight.""
My eyes narrowed.
"Investigated?""
The word cut through the noise.
I looked at Adrian.
"What do you mean?""
His expression softened slightly.
"Claire, your grandfather didn't only investigate my family.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"He investigated Daniel?""
Adrian nodded.
"Years ago.""
Daniel laughed.
But there was no humor in it.
"This is ridiculous.""
He looked around the room.
"Everyone is seriously going to believe some random man who walks in here with a folder?""
Nobody answered.
Because everyone had seen Daniel's reaction.
And sometimes a person's silence reveals more than a confession.
I turned toward Thomas.
"You knew.""
His face showed regret.
"Claire.""
"No.""
My voice sharpened.
"Don't say my name like that.""
The ballroom became quieter.
"You knew there was another branch of my family.""
Thomas nodded.
"Yes.""
"You knew Daniel was connected to it.""
A pause.
"Not directly.""
"Not directly?""
I almost laughed.
"Thomas, my husband is standing in a room full of people while someone says his family is connected to a twenty-six-year-old financial betrayal involving my grandfather.""
I stepped closer.
"And you knew something.""
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"I knew there were questions.""
"Questions?""
I looked away.
For years, I had trusted the people my grandfather left behind.
Thomas.
Eleanor.
The family advisors.
I believed they protected me.
Now I wondered if they had simply protected me from the truth.
Adrian spoke quietly.
"Your grandfather wasn't trying to control your life.""
I looked at him.
"He hid my family from me.""
"He was trying to protect you from a war you didn't ask for.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
My voice cracked slightly.
"He made that choice for me.""
Adrian didn't argue.
And somehow, that made it worse.
Because he understood.
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
"Claire.""
I turned.
For the first time all night, I saw something in his face that almost looked like the old Daniel.
The man who used to hold my hand.
The man who used to make me laugh.
The man I thought I knew.
"Don't listen to him.""
The words were simple.
But they carried desperation.
"Why?""
He hesitated.
A second too long.
"Because he's lying.""
I stared at him.
"Then tell me the truth.""
The room watched.
"Who is Adrian Vale?""
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because he didn't answer.
Because he couldn't.
"Daniel.""
My voice was quieter now.
"Who is he?""
Vanessa stepped in.
"This is insane. You can't expect him to answer some random accusation.""
I looked at her.
"You should be careful defending someone when you don't know what you're defending.""
Her face tightened.
"I know Daniel.""
"No.""
I looked at her silver dress.
"You know the version of Daniel he wanted you to know.""
She went silent.
Because everyone in that room knew what I meant.
Then Eleanor's voice came through my phone.
"Mrs. Mercer?""
I looked down.
"Yes?""
"I have accessed the acquisition records.""
The ballroom waited.
"What did you find?""
A pause.
Then:
"Daniel Mercer was not the only person connected to the company acquisition.""
Daniel's face changed.
"What?""
Eleanor continued.
"There was a secondary investor account.""
My heart tightened.
"Whose?""
The silence before her answer felt deliberate.
"An anonymous trust registered under the name V. Vale Holdings.""
Everyone looked at Adrian.
But Adrian wasn't surprised.
Because he already knew.
I turned to Daniel.
"Vanessa.""
Her face went pale.
"What?""
I looked at her.
"The initials.""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Then closed.
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time, he looked angry.
Not at me.
At her.
"Vanessa?""
She took a step back.
"Daniel, I can explain.""
The room changed instantly.
Because people believed accusations.
But they believed panic even more.
Daniel stared at her.
"You knew?""
"I didn't know it would happen like this.""
My stomach dropped.
"What would happen like this?""
Vanessa looked around.
She realized too late that she had said too much.
Daniel grabbed her wrist.
"Answer me.""
She pulled away.
"Don't act innocent.""
The words shocked everyone.
Including him.
"What did you just say?""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You really think you were the mastermind?""
The room went silent.
Daniel looked genuinely confused.
"You came to me.""
Her voice rose.
"You told me Claire was just a quiet wife who didn't understand business.""
I felt a strange calm settle over me.
Not surprise.
Not anger.
Just clarity.
Vanessa continued.
"You said once you became COO, everything would change.""
Daniel stared.
"I never said—"
"You promised me a future.""
A few executives exchanged looks.
Vanessa pointed at him.
"You told me Harlow Capital would never interfere because Claire had no interest in business.""
The words landed.
Hard.
Because Daniel had not only underestimated me.
He had planned around me.
I looked at Adrian.
"How much did he know?""
Adrian answered quietly.
"Enough.""
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
He looked at me.
"Claire, I can explain.""
I almost admired the confidence.
Almost.
After everything.
He still believed an explanation could fix betrayal.
"You have one minute.""
The room held its breath.
Daniel looked around.
The powerful executives.
The board members.
The woman he publicly humiliated.
The stranger who knew his secrets.
Then he looked at me.
"I didn't marry you for money.""
I waited.
"At first.""
The words hung there.
The entire room reacted.
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I loved you.""
My expression didn't change.
"At first?""
He swallowed.
"I didn't know who your family was.""
"Then when did you find out?""
Silence.
That silence was the answer.
"When?""
Daniel looked away.
"Three months after we started dating.""
My chest tightened.
Three months.
He knew.
For almost seven years, he knew.
And he let me believe he loved me without knowing.
"How?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Adrian did.
"Because someone introduced him to your grandfather's records.""
I turned.
"Who?""
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Then said:
"His father.""
Daniel's face went white.
And suddenly the betrayal became larger than my marriage.
Because Daniel hadn't simply hidden my identity.
He had hidden his family's connection to mine.
My phone vibrated.
Eleanor had sent a message.
I opened it.
One line appeared on the screen.
A line that made my hands go cold.
*Mrs. Mercer, we found the original Harlow family documents. Your grandfather's signature is on them. But the second signature belongs to Daniel Mercer's father.*
I stared at the screen.
Twenty-six years ago.
Before I met Daniel.
Before I loved him.
Before I trusted him.
His family had already been tied to mine.
And then Adrian spoke the words that changed everything.
"Claire, your husband didn't discover the Harlow fortune by accident.""
May you like
He looked directly at me.
"He was sent to find it.""
