Amused

Chapter 4: The Heir Nobody Knew

For seven years, I believed I was the only person carrying the Harlow name forward.

That belief lasted exactly until the moment Eleanor spoke those words.

"Someone who claims to be the original founder's hidden successor.""

The ballroom didn't just become quiet.

It became frozen.

Every conversation stopped.

Every phone lowered.

Every person who had spent the last hour watching Daniel destroy my reputation was now watching something far more dangerous unfold.

A family secret.

Daniel looked at me from across the room.

For once, he wasn't smiling.

Good.

He finally understood that this night had moved beyond his control.

I lifted my phone closer.

"Eleanor, repeat that.""

Her voice remained professional.

"Mrs. Mercer, a man has contacted our legal department claiming he has documentation proving he is the rightful successor to the original Harlow estate structure.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Who is he?""

A pause.

Then:

"His name is Adrian Vale.""

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to Thomas.

I saw it immediately.

The slight change in his expression.

The way his shoulders stiffened.

"Thomas?""

He looked away.

That worried me more than the stranger's claim.

"Who is Adrian Vale?""

Thomas didn't answer.

Not right away.

And that hesitation told me everything.

"Thomas.""

He looked at me.

"Not here.""

I almost laughed.

Not here.

That was what everyone said when the truth became inconvenient.

Daniel had said it when he wanted to avoid accountability.

Now Thomas was saying it when my entire family's history was being questioned.

"No," I said quietly.

The room listened.

"I think we are done keeping secrets from me.""

Thomas lowered his eyes.

He knew I was right.

Daniel stepped away from the stage.

"Claire.""

I turned toward him.

His expression was different now.

The arrogance was gone.

But I didn't mistake fear for regret.

Not anymore.

"Is this another performance?""

His eyebrows pulled together.

"What?""

"You spent the last hour trying to convince everyone I was irrelevant.""

I looked around the room.

"Now someone appears claiming my family has another heir.""

My eyes returned to him.

"And suddenly you look worried.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Don't do this.""

"Do what?""

"Make everything about you.""

The irony was almost painful.

Almost.

A few executives exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Daniel continued.

"I don't know what is happening with your family, but this doesn't change what happened between us.""

"No.""

My voice was calm.

"It changes everything.""

Because if Adrian Vale was real, then my grandfather had hidden something from me.

And my grandfather had never hidden anything without a reason.

Eleanor spoke again.

"Mrs. Mercer?""

"Yes?""

"Adrian Vale is requesting immediate access to the Harlow family trust records.""

The room reacted.

Someone whispered, "Impossible.""

Another person said, "The trust is private.""

I looked at Thomas.

"Can he do that?""

Thomas remained silent.

That was answer enough.

"Thomas.""

He finally spoke.

"Not unless there is a legal connection.""

The air shifted.

"Meaning?""

Thomas looked at me.

"Meaning he would need evidence.""

"What kind of evidence?""

His expression became heavy.

"Family evidence.""

My stomach dropped.

A cold realization moved through me.

My grandfather had spent his entire life protecting the Harlow legacy.

If someone could challenge me, they couldn't just have a business claim.

They had to have something personal.

Something connected to blood.

Daniel watched my reaction.

And I saw it.

A flicker.

A tiny moment where his fear turned into curiosity.

That was when I knew something was wrong.

Daniel wasn't just confused.

He was interested.

"You know him," I said.

His face changed.

"What?""

"You know Adrian Vale.""

"I don't.""

The answer came too quickly.

Too easily.

I stepped closer.

"You hesitated.""

Daniel laughed.

"Claire, after everything tonight, you're seriously accusing me of knowing some random stranger?""

"Yes.""

The honesty surprised him.

Because I finally stopped trying to make him comfortable.

"Because I spent seven years believing you were honest with me.""

My voice lowered.

"And I was wrong.""

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"Daniel, maybe we should leave.""

Everyone looked at her.

Interesting.

The woman who had spent the evening acting untouchable now wanted an exit.

Daniel ignored her.

"We are not leaving.""

His eyes stayed on me.

"I want to know what's happening.""

I almost believed him.

Almost.

Then Thomas stepped forward.

"Claire.""

I turned.

"What?""

"Adrian Vale is here.""

Every person in the room looked toward the entrance.

The doors opened.

And a man walked in.

He wasn't what I expected.

I don't know what I expected.

Someone older.

Someone desperate.

Someone who looked like he was chasing money.

Instead, he looked calm.

Controlled.

He wore a dark gray suit without a tie.

No flashy watch.

No expensive jewelry.

Nothing that screamed wealth.

But his confidence filled the room before he said a word.

He stopped a few feet away.

His eyes found mine immediately.

And I hated that I recognized something familiar.

Not his face.

Something else.

The way he stood.

The way he looked at the room.

The same quiet confidence my grandfather had.

"Claire Harlow.""

Hearing my full name from his mouth felt strange.

"Who are you?""

He studied me.

Then he looked at Thomas.

"She doesn't know.""

Thomas said nothing.

That answer made my heart sink.

Adrian looked back at me.

"My name is Adrian Vale.""

"I know.""

"No.""

His expression softened.

"You know my name.""

A pause.

"You don't know who I am.""

The room remained silent.

I crossed my arms.

"Then explain.""

He reached inside his jacket.

Several security guards moved immediately.

But Adrian calmly removed a small envelope.

"Before I give you this, I need you to understand something.""

I didn't move.

"What?""

"My intention is not to take anything from you.""

I almost smiled.

"Everyone who wants something says that first.""

A few people looked down.

Adrian accepted the comment.

Fair enough.

"My intention is to correct something your grandfather changed twenty-five years ago.""

Thomas closed his eyes.

There it was.

Confirmation.

He knew.

"You knew about him.""

Thomas nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

My voice became colder.

"And you never told me.""

"I was ordered not to.""

"By my grandfather?""

"Yes.""

I looked at Adrian.

"Why?""

Adrian held out the envelope.

"Because your grandfather believed you deserved a chance to live a normal life.""

My fingers touched the envelope.

I didn't open it.

"Normal?""

Adrian nodded.

"He believed that if you knew the full truth, every relationship in your life would become a negotiation.""

The words hit harder than expected.

Because that was exactly what I had feared.

That was why I hid my identity from Daniel.

I wanted love without calculation.

But maybe the truth was that I had only been protecting myself from people who never deserved the chance.

Adrian continued.

"Your grandfather had a son.""

The room went silent.

A son.

My breath caught.

"No.""

Adrian looked at me.

"My father.""

I stared at him.

The entire world seemed to tilt.

"My grandfather had a son?""

Thomas finally spoke.

"Claire...""

I turned toward him.

"Is this true?""

His silence answered.

I looked back at Adrian.

"Then why was I told I was his only family?""

Adrian's face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

"Because your grandfather believed my father betrayed him.""

I swallowed.

"What does that mean?""

Adrian looked around the ballroom.

At Daniel.

At Vanessa.

At every person watching.

Then he said the sentence that changed how I saw my entire life.

"My father didn't betray Henry Harlow.""

A pause.

"He was framed.""

Nobody moved.

Adrian took one step closer.

"And the person responsible is still alive.""

My heart pounded.

"Who?""

His eyes shifted.

Not toward me.

Not toward Thomas.

Toward Daniel.

Daniel went completely still.

For the first time all night, he looked genuinely afraid.

I turned slowly.

"Daniel?""

He immediately shook his head.

"No.""

But Adrian wasn't looking at him like a stranger.

He was looking at him like someone whose secret had finally been exposed.

"Your husband knows more about this family than he told you.""

The room exploded with whispers.

Daniel's face went pale.

"He's lying.""

Adrian calmly replied.

"Then explain why your father transferred money to my father's account twenty-six years ago.""

Daniel stopped breathing.

And I knew.

Whatever happened next wasn't just about my marriage.

It wasn't just about Mercer Dynamics.

It wasn't even about Harlow Capital.

It was about a secret buried before I was born.

May you like

A secret my grandfather took to his grave.

And somehow, my husband had been standing on top of it the entire time.
