Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Secret

I opened the envelope with shaking hands.

The paper inside was old.

Folded.

Carefully hidden.

At the top were words that made my heart stop.

*DNA PATERNITY TEST RESULTS*

For a moment, the world went silent.

I looked at the page.

Then at Claire.

“No.””

She immediately started crying.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“No.””

Daniel looked confused.

Vanessa watched silently.

Ethan stood nearby, unaware of what the paper meant.

I folded it quickly.

Not because I wanted to hide it.

Because I wanted to protect him.

I walked toward the kitchen.

“Ethan.””

He looked up.

“Yeah, Dad?””

“Go upstairs and watch your movie, okay?””

“But—”

“Please.””

Something in my voice made him listen.

When he disappeared, I turned back.

“Explain.””

Claire looked broken.

“It’s not what you think.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

She wiped her face.

“When Ethan was born, there was a problem with the hospital records.””

“What problem?””

She looked down.

“The paperwork got mixed up.””

I stared.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Then why was there a DNA test?””

Silence.

Daniel closed his eyes.

I looked at him.

“You knew.””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

He finally spoke.

“I found out later.””

My stomach turned.

“You knew my son might not be mine?””

“I wasn’t sure.””

“Not sure?””

My voice exploded.

“You stood in my house. You watched me raise him. You watched me love him.””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I thought the truth would destroy him.””

I pointed toward the stairs.

“The truth destroys people?””

I shook my head.

“Secrets do.””

Claire stepped closer.

“Marcus, please listen.””

I looked at her.

“I’m listening.””

She took a breath.

“The test wasn’t because I cheated.””

I stared.

“Then why?””

She whispered:

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Her tears fell.

“That Ethan wasn’t yours.””

The words hurt.

But somehow, not as much as I expected.

Because I knew something.

A piece of paper didn’t erase six years of memories.

It didn’t erase bedtime stories.

School projects.

The first time he called me Dad.

I looked upstairs.

My son.

My little boy.

The child I loved.

Claire continued.

“When he was born, the doctors said there was a possibility of a mistake because of the records.””

“So you tested him.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

She looked at me.

“He is yours.””

I froze.

“What?””

She nodded.

“He is your son.””

I stared at the paper.

Then at her.

“Then why hide this?””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Because I helped her hide it.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“Claire was scared you would think she betrayed you.””

I laughed quietly.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“She was afraid I would think she betrayed me.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And then she actually did.””

Claire looked destroyed.

“I know.””

The anger inside me didn’t disappear.

But something else appeared.

Exhaustion.

Years of love.

Years of lies.

All mixed together.

Then my phone rang.

The screen showed a number I recognized.

My mother.

I answered.

“Mom?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Marcus.””

“What happened?””

“I need you to come here.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then she said:

“Because I know who really started all of this.””

I looked at Claire.

At Daniel.

At Vanessa.

“Who?””

My mother whispered:

“It was your father.””

My blood went cold.

“My father?””

“He’s alive.””

I stopped breathing.

Because my father had been dead for fifteen years.

May you like

Or at least…

That was what everyone told me.
