Chapter 7: The Truth She Buried
I didn’t remember hanging up.
I only remembered the sound of my own breathing.
Vanessa’s voice stayed in my head.
Not because it was frightening.
Because it was confident.
Like she had been waiting for this moment.
Claire walked toward me.
“Marcus…”
I held up my hand.
“No.””
She stopped.
“How long?””
She looked confused.
“How long what?””
“How long has Vanessa been involved in our lives?””
Claire looked away.
That was enough.
“Tell me.””
“Three years.””
The number hit me harder than I expected.
Three years.
Not weeks.
Not months.
Years.
I sat down.
Daniel remained standing.
“This is my fault too.””
I looked at him.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it is.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“I knew Vanessa was dangerous.””
Claire looked at him.
“Daniel…”
“No. He deserves the truth.””
He looked at me.
“Vanessa found out about Claire and me.””
My face hardened.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“And she used it?””
Daniel nodded.
“She threatened us.””
Claire started crying.
“She said she would tell you.””
I stared.
“Why didn’t she?””
Neither answered.
Then I understood.
“You were protecting yourselves.””
Claire shook her head.
“At first.””
“At first?””
She covered her face.
“Then things got worse.””
Daniel continued.
“Vanessa wanted control.””
“Control over what?””
“Everything.””
He looked toward the stairs.
“Your family.””
I stood.
“What did she do?””
Claire whispered:
“She started sending messages.””
“What kind?””
“Pictures.””
I frowned.
“Pictures of what?””
“Things from our house.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Claire nodded.
“She would send pictures of our living room. Ethan’s school bag. Your car.””
I felt sick.
“She was watching us?””
“Yes.””
I walked to the window.
Outside, the Texas evening was quiet.
Too quiet.
Someone had been looking into my life while I was living it.
Someone had been close enough to see my son’s birthday decorations.
Close enough to know our routines.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Vanessa.
A photo.
I opened it.
My heart stopped.
It was a picture of my house.
Taken from across the street.
The caption underneath read:
*“You should have listened when I warned you about Claire.””*
I showed them.
Claire went pale.
Daniel whispered:
“She’s here.””
I turned.
“What?””
“She likes watching people react.””
I grabbed my keys.
Claire stepped forward.
“Marcus, don’t.””
“You’re telling me someone has been spying on my family and I’m supposed to sit here?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I’m telling you she’s dangerous.””
I looked at her.
“You knew that and you still hid it?””
She cried harder.
“I was scared.””
I wanted to hate her.
Part of me did.
But seeing her terrified made everything complicated.
Because underneath the anger was a painful truth.
I still cared.
And that made the betrayal worse.
A knock came at the door.
Everyone froze.
Not a normal knock.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Three times.
Daniel stepped backward.
“She’s here.””
I looked at the front door.
My entire body went cold.
Then a voice came from outside.
“Claire?””
A woman.
Calm.
Almost friendly.
“I know you’re inside.””
Ethan grabbed my hand.
“Dad?””
I looked at my son.
Then at the door.
The woman outside continued:
“And Marcus…”
May you like
My blood froze.
“I think we need to talk.””
