Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Message

I stared at the message on my phone until the words blurred.

*“If you think Daniel is the worst thing your wife has hidden from you, you’re not ready for the truth.””*

For several seconds, nobody in the room moved.

Not Claire.

Not Daniel.

Not me.

The silence felt heavier than the betrayal itself.

Because betrayal had a shape now.

It had a name.

Daniel.

But this message?

This was something else.

Something waiting in the shadows.

I slowly lowered my phone.

“Who sent this?””

Claire’s face changed.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Real fear.

And that scared me more than anything.

“Claire,” I said quietly.

“Who sent this?””

She looked at Daniel.

That tiny movement told me everything.

They both knew.

“You knew about this?””

Daniel shook his head immediately.

“No.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

His voice was desperate.

“I swear, Marcus. I have no idea who sent that.””

I looked at Claire.

She sat down slowly.

Her hands covered her face.

“I never wanted this.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that.””

Tears slipped between her fingers.

“Because it’s true.””

“Then start explaining.””

She looked up.

For the first time since this nightmare began, she didn’t look like someone trying to escape.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

“There’s someone else involved.””

My jaw tightened.

“Someone else?””

Daniel looked toward the floor.

I noticed.

And my anger returned.

“Why does everyone in this room know something except me?””

Nobody answered.

I walked toward the kitchen counter and placed both hands against it.

The same kitchen where Claire and I had cooked together.

The same place where Ethan used to sit on the counter while we made pancakes on Sunday mornings.

Everything looked the same.

But nothing was.

“Who is she?”” I asked.

Claire whispered:

“Her name is Vanessa.””

The name meant nothing to me.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“Who is Vanessa?””

Claire hesitated.

“She was my friend.””

I turned around.

“Was?””

She nodded.

“Years ago.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Claire, you need to tell him everything.””

She looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

I stared at both of them.

“Tell me.””

Claire took a shaky breath.

“Vanessa and I worked together before I met you.””

“Okay.””

“She knew about our marriage.””

“That’s not exactly a crime.””

“No.””

Her voice became smaller.

“But she knew things she shouldn’t have known.””

I frowned.

“What things?””

Claire looked toward the stairs.

Toward Ethan’s room.

“She knew when you traveled.””

A chill went through me.

“She knew your schedule?””

Claire nodded.

“Sometimes before I did.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“How?””

“She had access to my computer.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

Claire looked down.

“Because she helped me with my business.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“No.””

She wiped her tears.

“It doesn’t.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Marcus, Vanessa wasn’t just a friend.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

His face hardened.

“She was obsessed with Claire.””

The words landed like a punch.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“She always wanted what I had.””

“Me?””

She nodded.

“At first, I thought she was just jealous.””

“And then?””

“She started saying strange things.””

“What things?””

Claire swallowed.

“She told me you weren’t the right man for me.””

I stared.

“She said you worked too much. That you were never around.””

I looked away.

Because those words hurt because there was truth hidden inside them.

I had worked constantly.

I had missed dinners.

Missed school events.

Missed moments I promised myself I wouldn’t miss.

But I never stopped loving them.

“I made mistakes,” I said quietly.

Claire looked at me.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t get to use my mistakes to justify what happened.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A small footstep.

Ethan.

We all looked toward the staircase.

He was standing there holding his blanket.

His eyes were tired.

“Dad?””

I immediately walked toward him.

“Hey, buddy.””

“Are you and Mommy getting divorced?””

The question destroyed me.

Because children always found the exact wound.

I knelt down.

“Why would you ask that?””

He shrugged.

“Because Grandma said sometimes people leave when they stop loving each other.””

I froze.

“Grandma?””

Ethan looked confused.

“She called earlier.””

Claire stood suddenly.

“What?””

“She said she wanted to talk to me.””

I looked at Claire.

“Your mother called him?””

She looked just as confused.

“No.””

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone stared at it.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Cold.

Calm.

“You finally found out.””

My grip tightened.

“Who is this?””

A soft laugh.

“You don’t recognize my voice?””

“No.””

“That’s because Claire never told you about me.””

I looked at my wife.

She looked terrified.

“Vanessa?””

The line went silent.

Then the woman whispered:

“So she did mention my name.””
