Amused

Chapter 7: The Truth My Mother Buried

I read the letter three times.

Not because I didn’t understand the words.

Because I didn’t want to.

My mother’s handwriting filled the page.

Every curve.

Every familiar stroke.

A piece of her that survived when everything else was gone.

*Brianna,*

*Your father is a good man. Never let anyone convince you otherwise.*

I exhaled.

A small relief.

But the next sentence destroyed it.

*Good people can still make terrible mistakes.*

I sat down.

Daniel remained silent beside me.

The letter continued.

My mother explained that years earlier, Isaiah Carter and Richard Whitmore had created the foundation together.

They had the same dream.

To build something that helped people who had no opportunities.

But money changed everything.

Richard wanted control.

He wanted influence.

He wanted the foundation to become a machine that benefited powerful families.

My father refused.

And that was when everything began falling apart.

*Richard threatened to destroy Isaiah.*

*He said if he couldn’t control the foundation, nobody would.*

I looked up.

“Did my father know?””

Daniel sighed.

“He knew Richard was angry.””

“But not this?””

“No.””

I kept reading.

Then I reached the part that made my hands go cold.

*The person helping Richard is someone close to us.*

Not a stranger.

Not an enemy.

Someone inside.

Someone we trusted.

My mother never wrote the name.

But she left a clue.

A phrase.

*The person who smiles the most is the person hiding the darkest intentions.*

I closed my eyes.

So many people.

So many possibilities.

Then I saw the flash drive.

I picked it up.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“Can we access this?””

He nodded.

Back at the office, we opened the files.

There were videos.

Documents.

Recordings.

My mother had been collecting evidence.

Not because she wanted revenge.

Because she wanted the truth to survive.

The first video loaded.

My mother appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

But still beautiful.

My breath caught.

I hadn’t heard her voice in years.

“Hello, Brianna.””

I covered my mouth.

Daniel looked away, giving me privacy.

“If you’re watching this, then something happened.””

My mother smiled sadly.

“I wish I could be there to explain everything.””

A tear fell before I could stop it.

“I need you to understand something. Your father loves you more than anything.””

I looked down.

“But love doesn’t mean someone is always right.””

The video continued.

She explained that she discovered financial records connecting Richard Whitmore to illegal transfers.

But she also discovered something else.

Someone had been helping him.

Someone inside the Carter Foundation.

Then my mother said the words that made me stop breathing.

“The person helping Richard is not your father’s enemy.””

A pause.

“They are your father’s blood.””

I froze.

Daniel looked at me.

“Blood?””

The video continued.

“I don’t know how far this betrayal goes. But if anything happens to me, Brianna, trust your instincts.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

My mind raced.

Isaiah had only one sibling.

Evelyn.

But that didn’t make sense.

She had betrayed him.

She admitted it.

But Richard Whitmore?

The foundation?

The missing money?

How deep did this go?

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Brianna.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

No.

It couldn’t be.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“You don’t remember me.””

My heart started pounding.

“I’m sorry?””

“I was there the night your mother died.””

The world stopped.

My mother’s death had always been explained simply.

A car accident.

A rainy road.

A tragedy.

But now?

Everything I knew felt like a lie.

“Who are you?””

The woman whispered:

“The person your father told you never existed.””

The call ended.

I looked at Daniel.

He had seen my face change.

“What happened?””

I slowly lowered the phone.

“She was there.””

“Who?””

I looked at him.

“The witness to my mother’s death.””

Daniel stood.

“Brianna, your mother’s accident was investigated.””

“I know.””

“Then why would someone claim they were there?””

I looked at the black screen of my phone.

Because deep down, I already knew.

May you like

Someone had spent years hiding the truth.

And now they were finally ready to reveal it.
