Chapter 6: The Document That Changed Everything

The room went silent after Brielle’s words.

“There’s another document.””

I stared at her.

The reporters around us were still moving, cameras still flashing, but everything felt distant.

Because there was only one thing I could focus on.

My name.

“What document?”” I asked.

Brielle didn’t answer immediately.

For the first time since I had met her, she looked afraid.

Not embarrassed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

My father noticed too.

“Brielle,” he said slowly.

“What are you talking about?””

She looked toward the exit.

“I shouldn’t be here.””

Daniel stepped in front of her.

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“You don’t get to walk away after bringing this into the room.””

Brielle’s jaw tightened.

“You think you know everything?””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“But I know enough to know that you’re hiding something.””

The reporters began shouting questions again.

“What document?””

“Does it involve Brianna Carter?””

“Is there more fraud?””

My head was spinning.

I looked at Brielle.

“Tell me.””

She looked at me for several seconds.

Then she laughed softly.

Not because something was funny.

Because she was exhausted.

“You really don’t know, do you?””

My stomach tightened.

“Know what?””

“That your mother didn’t trust your father.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

My father immediately stepped forward.

“That’s not true.””

Brielle looked at him.

“Isn’t it?””

The confidence in her voice made everyone stop.

My father’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

A tiny crack.

And I hated that I saw it.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

“Brianna, your mother and I loved each other.””

“I didn’t ask that.””

My voice became quieter.

“I asked if she trusted you.””

Nobody moved.

My father looked away.

That hurt more than any answer.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

“You knew,” I whispered.

He didn’t deny it.

“I knew there were concerns.””

“Concerns?””

I almost laughed.

“My mother wrote that you couldn’t know the truth yet.””

I pointed at the papers.

“And now she’s telling me there was another document.””

I looked at everyone.

“Why does everyone know pieces of my life except me?””

My father stepped closer.

“Because we were trying to protect you.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You were trying to protect yourselves.””

The words hurt him.

I saw that.

But they were true.

For years, everyone had made decisions around me.

They called it love.

They called it protection.

But all I ever wanted was honesty.

Brielle finally spoke.

“The document is in a safety deposit box.””

Daniel looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because my father had access.””

That caught everyone’s attention.

Brielle looked uncomfortable.

“My father and Isaiah used to be business partners.””

My father frowned.

“Years ago.””

“Yes.””

She looked at him.

“Before you cut him out.””

A cold silence followed.

I knew my father.

He didn’t make decisions without reason.

But there was something about Brielle’s tone.

Something that suggested a completely different story existed.

“What was in the document?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“Proof that your mother planned to leave the foundation.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“She believed someone inside the company was dangerous.””

My father shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Brielle smiled sadly.

“You keep saying that.””

I looked at my father.

“Did Mom ever say she wanted to leave?””

He didn’t answer.

And that was enough.

My hands began shaking.

Not because I believed Brielle.

Because I realized there was a part of my mother’s life I had never known.

A part my father had hidden.

That evening, Daniel took me to the bank where the safety deposit box was stored.

My father wanted to come.

I told him no.

Not because I hated him.

Because I needed one moment where the truth belonged only to me.

The bank manager recognized Daniel immediately.

After verifying everything, he brought out the box.

It was smaller than I expected.

A lifetime of secrets inside something that could fit in my hands.

Daniel stood beside me.

“You don’t have to open it alone.””

I looked at him.

“I do.””

I lifted the lid.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

A flash drive.

And a photograph.

I picked up the photograph first.

My mother.

My father.

And another person standing between them.

Someone I recognized immediately.

I froze.

Because the man in the photo was not a stranger.

He was someone who had attended my birthday parties.

Someone who had called himself family.

Someone who had been at my house every holiday.

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

His face went pale.

“No.””

I turned the photograph around.

“Who is he?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Brianna…”

“Who is he?””

He whispered the answer.

And when he said the name, my entire world shifted.

“Your father’s former partner.””

I stared at the photograph.

“Richard Whitmore.””

Brielle’s father.

The man behind the family that had tried to destroy mine.

I picked up the letter.

My mother’s handwriting waited.

I opened it.

May you like

The first line made my heart stop.

*Brianna, if you are reading this, it means I was right to be afraid.*
