Amused

Chapter 5: The Daughter Who Fought Back

By sunrise, my father’s name was everywhere.

News anchors repeated the same words.

Scandal.

Fraud.

Betrayal.

And somehow, my face was attached to all of it.

The world had changed overnight.

Yesterday, I was invisible.

Today, everyone knew me.

But not for who I was.

For a lie.

My father stood in the living room watching the television.

He looked exhausted.

“They’re saying you exposed me.””

I turned toward him.

“I would never do that.””

“I know.””

His answer came instantly.

No hesitation.

That almost broke me.

Because after everything, he still trusted me.

Daniel entered with more documents.

“We need a public response.””

My father nodded.

“We’ll hold a press conference.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

Both men turned.

I took a breath.

“We don’t deny everything.””

Daniel frowned.

“Brianna?””

“If we only say it’s a lie, people will think we’re hiding something.””

My father studied me.

“You have an idea.””

“Yes.””

I walked to the table.

“Someone wanted me to become the face of this scandal.””

I placed the documents down.

“So let me become the face.””

Daniel looked concerned.

“That’s dangerous.””

“So was kneeling on that ballroom floor while everyone watched.””

Silence.

My father looked at me.

And I saw something in his eyes.

Pride.

Not because I was fighting.

Because I had finally stopped hiding.

The press conference began at noon.

Hundreds of reporters filled the room.

Cameras flashed.

Questions shouted.

“Mr. Carter, did you misuse foundation money?””

“Brianna Carter, did you accuse your own father?””

I stepped toward the microphone.

The room quieted.

“My name is Brianna Ellis Carter.””

I paused.

“And I need to correct something.””

The reporters leaned forward.

“I did not expose my father.””

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

“I exposed the truth.””

The cameras flashed faster.

I continued.

“I volunteered at my father’s foundation because I wanted to understand the people who worked there. I wanted to see if kindness existed when nobody knew my last name.””

I looked directly into the cameras.

“And what I discovered was not my father’s failure.””

I held up the documents.

“It was someone else’s betrayal.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“We have evidence of unauthorized financial activity.””

The room exploded.

Questions flew.

Then a voice interrupted.

“Those documents are fake.””

Everyone turned.

Evelyn stood at the back of the room.

My heart dropped.

She walked forward.

“I loved my brother once.””

My father looked shattered.

“But he built an empire and forgot the people who helped him.””

The reporters rushed toward her.

Evelyn smiled.

Because this was her moment.

Or so she thought.

Then Daniel pressed a button.

The speakers turned on.

A recording filled the room.

Evelyn’s own voice.

Discussing the transfers.

Discussing Brielle.

Discussing the plan.

Her face changed.

“No.””

The room went silent.

I watched as the woman who once comforted me realized she had lost.

My father looked at his sister.

“Why?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with anger.

“Because you always had everything.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

His voice broke.

“You had me.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Brielle’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

And all the confidence disappeared.

She answered quietly.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“You can’t do that.””

She looked at me.

And I knew.

Something had changed.

Because whoever was on the phone had more power than Brielle.

She slowly lowered the phone.

Then she whispered:

“Your mother wasn’t the only one who knew the truth.””

My blood ran cold.

“What did you say?””

Brielle looked at me.

“There’s another document.””

A document that could destroy everything.

May you like

And this time…

It had my name on it.
