Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Name

The screen went black.

But Marcus’s final words remained in my mind.

*“Ethan Carter.””*

Three words.

Three words that changed everything.

I looked at Ethan.

He looked like a man who had just watched his entire world collapse.

For years, he had been the person everyone trusted.

The billionaire who built companies.

The man who funded hospitals.

The man who gave people second chances.

Now someone had left behind a message saying he was responsible for a death.

Not Andrew.

Not a stranger.

Him.

“I don’t understand,” I whispered.

Neither did Ethan.

For once, he had no immediate answer.

No strategy.

No solution.

Just silence.

Victoria looked at him carefully.

“Ethan…”

He raised a hand.

“Don’t.””

His voice was quiet.

But broken.

“Don’t tell me it isn’t possible.””

Victoria stopped.

Because she knew him.

She knew he needed the truth more than comfort.

Ethan turned back to the computer.

“Play it again.””

I stared.

“Ethan.””

“Play it.””

Victoria hesitated.

Then she opened the video.

Marcus appeared again.

The same tired eyes.

The same fear.

“If you’re watching this, it means I failed.””

The room felt smaller.

“Lena, if you found this, listen carefully.””

Marcus looked directly into the camera.

“Andrew Vaughn is not the person you should be looking for.””

My breath caught.

“Everyone thinks Andrew is the center of this.””

A pause.

“He wants people to think that.””

Marcus looked down briefly.

“But Andrew is only a weapon.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“A weapon for who?”” he whispered.

The video continued.

“I found evidence connecting hospital funds, private companies, and someone powerful enough to erase every trace.””

Marcus swallowed.

“I thought I could expose him.””

A sad smile crossed his face.

“I was wrong.””

Then came the sentence.

The one that destroyed us.

“If something happens to me, investigate Ethan Carter.””

The video paused.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan said:

“Continue.””

The next seconds loaded.

Marcus looked more afraid than before.

“Ethan Carter is either the person responsible…”

A pause.

“Or the only person who can reveal who is.””

The video ended.

The silence afterward was different.

Because the accusation was gone.

But the question remained.

Ethan wasn’t necessarily guilty.

But he was connected.

And someone had wanted him to know.

“I need access to the original files,” Ethan said.

Victoria shook her head.

“You can’t.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Dad locked them away.””

Ethan froze.

“My father?””

Victoria nodded.

“After Marcus died, Dad ordered a complete internal investigation.””

“And?””

“And then he stopped it.””

“Why?””

Victoria looked at me.

“Because he discovered something.””

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then answered.

“Someone inside Carter Foundation had been using our resources to hide Andrew’s operations.””

Ethan stared.

“Who?””

“We never found out.””

“That’s not true.””

Victoria looked away.

“Victoria.””

Her silence became unbearable.

“Tell me.””

She finally whispered:

“Dad suspected someone close to him.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She looked at Ethan.

And I knew before she spoke.

“Your mother.””

The words landed like a shockwave.

Ethan stepped back.

“No.””

Victoria’s eyes filled with regret.

“I’m sorry.””

“My mother died before any of this happened.””

“She was involved before she died.””

“No.””

His voice was stronger.

More defensive.

“My mother spent her life helping people.””

“So did Andrew.””

The sentence hurt.

Because it was true.

Good reputations were sometimes the best disguise.

Ethan looked furious.

“Don’t compare them.””

“I’m not.””

Victoria’s voice softened.

“I’m telling you what Dad found.””

I watched Ethan struggle.

Because this wasn’t about evidence anymore.

It was about the people he loved.

His father.

His mother.

His family.

Everything that built him.

Everything he believed.

“I need to see the files.””

Victoria nodded slowly.

“There’s one place.””

“Where?””

“The old Carter estate.””

I frowned.

“The one outside the city?””

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at the clock.

The gala was still happening.

The city was still celebrating.

And downstairs, Andrew Vaughn was still receiving praise.

But none of us cared anymore.

We left through a private elevator.

The ride down was silent.

I stood beside Ethan.

But he felt farther away than ever.

Finally, I spoke.

“Do you believe it?””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“That you could have been responsible.””

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

“I don’t know.””

The honesty shocked me.

“I don’t remember everything from that time.””

“Ethan…”

“My father controlled the company.””

He stared at the elevator doors.

“There were things I wasn’t told.””

I understood that feeling.

Secrets inside families.

Things hidden in the name of protection.

Things that still caused damage.

“When Marcus died, I was trying to rebuild Carter Industries after my father’s death.””

He looked at me.

“I was twenty-eight. I was drowning.””

I listened.

“People think being rich means you have control.””

A small, bitter smile.

“They’re wrong.””

The elevator opened.

We stepped into the underground garage.

Before we reached the car, Ethan stopped.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“You should stay here.””

“No.””

“Lena.””

“I’m not running anymore.””

He studied me.

“You don’t know what we’ll find.””

“I know.””

I looked at him.

“But I spent years letting Andrew decide what I could handle.””

A pause.

“I’m done.””

For the first time that night, Ethan smiled.

Not because anything was funny.

Because he was proud.

“Okay.””

We drove to the Carter estate.

The mansion was older than the tower.

Less impressive.

More personal.

The place where Ethan grew up.

Inside, everything was covered with dust.

But the security system was still active.

Victoria entered a code.

A hidden door opened behind a bookshelf.

Inside was a private archive.

Files.

Hard drives.

Documents.

Evidence.

Ethan walked slowly inside.

“My father built this room.””

Victoria said quietly.

“He said every family had secrets.””

I looked at the shelves.

“How many?””

“Too many.””

Ethan found a locked cabinet.

The label on it made him stop.

*M. REED INVESTIGATION*

Marcus.

He opened it.

Inside was a folder.

The first page was a handwritten note.

Marcus’s handwriting.

Ethan picked it up.

“What does it say?””

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

“Ethan?””

He handed it to me.

The note was short.

**Ethan, if you found this, I’m sorry. I was wrong about you. The person who wants you blamed is the same person who destroyed me.

Trust Lena. She is the only person who never knew she was part of the plan.**

I looked up.

“Part of what plan?””

Ethan flipped the page.

Behind it was another document.

A payment record.

A transfer.

A name.

Andrew Vaughn.

But underneath Andrew’s name was another.

The person who authorized the payment.

The person who moved the money.

The person who had access to Carter Foundation accounts.

My hands went cold.

Because I knew the name.

Ethan knew the name.

Everyone in New York knew the name.

Victoria whispered:

“No…”

The door behind us suddenly closed.

We turned.

Someone was standing in the darkness.

A voice came from the doorway.

“You were never supposed to find that file.””

My heart stopped.

Because the voice wasn’t Andrew’s.

It was someone we trusted.

Someone who had helped us all night.

Someone who knew exactly where we were.

And when the person stepped into the light, Ethan’s face went pale.

“Mom?””

The impossible person stared back at us.

Alive.

Older.

But unmistakably her.

Evelyn Carter.

And she was holding the original copy of Marcus Reed’s missing evidence.
